I have been looking into the world of autoloading shotguns. I have no idea what I want but I've been doing some comparisons between price and names that I trust and I've been looking at this Remington 11-87 Sportsman: http://www.forthehunt.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=29782747

I know absolutely ZERO about autoloading shotguns aside from the difference between gas-operated and recoil/inertia-operated actions only in that one is driven by gas and one is driven by recoil. I have come to find that the gas-operated actions are a bit quicker when it comes to cycling and there seems to be a growing industry move towards gas-operated actions. I don't know which one is more reliable or durable.

With that being said, will the 11-87 handle multiple tasks from light dove loads to pheasant loads to turkey loads or are these gas-operated actions finicky? Would this be a decent choice for such a multi-purpose shotgun or should I look elsewhere?

My main concern is multi-purpose reliability. Dove Loads thru 3" turkey loads. Is this even a possibility in the gas-operated world of auto shotguns?

Actually, the recoil op shotguns are faster cycling and the gas guns feel softer.

That said, the 1187 should handle loads from 3 dram 1 1/8 loads up to full magnums.

lycanthrope--thanks for the info. It seems that the Beretta gas-operated Pintails cycle faster than the recoil operated ones.

I'm trying to encourage diversity in my gun cabinet. I already have a Winchester 1300. I figured I'd give Remington some equal time in my life. :)

My 11-87 does it all!

I've used it dove, duck, and turkey hunting. No problems! :)

My 11-87 will handle 1oz light reloads easily, and it has shot some 3" waterfowl loads and a few 3" heavy lead loads. It has in excess of 30,000 rounds through it, a few O-rings had to be replaced but that is about all.

That said I like the Beretta 391 better, though I don't own one I have shot one enough to appreciate it, and there will be those that swear by the SX2 Winchesters and swear at the 11-87.

I also have 3 1100's that I prefer to shoot over the 11-87, though they are sub gauges. No more 3" shells than I shoot a 2 3/4 chamber is plenty IMO.

Gas guns are softer shooting.

I prefer the 1100 over the 1187. IME the 1100 just held up better with tens of thousands of rds a year - for years and years. I never used 3" shells anyway, and still can take whatever I want with a 2 3/4" shell.

Used 1100 would be a great gun for the money. Used Berettas are another.

New - Win SX2 -

The Name Sake -
I am biased I have put over a couple of HUNDRED thousand rds through one SX1 I own and still shoot. I have no idea all the rds I put in other SX1s over the years.

THE BEST kept secret to keeping a Autoloader running - Use ATF to lube.

I don't know about Remingtons, but I like my SX2 a lot. I've only shot trap with it, but it handles 1oz loads just fine. The berettas I've seen had slightly nicer fit and finish than my gun (and comparable to my dad's SBE), but I don't know if they're worth the extra money since I've never fired one. As for which is faster, everything I've seen says that depends on which guns you're comparing. Benelli claimed their guns were the fastest cycling for a while, but when the SX2 came out, a mag did a test where they could empty the magazine in half a second. Given that speed, I'd say the difference in cycling speed is more about bragging rights than practical differences. A gas gun, however, is generally going to have softer recoil than a recoil operated gun. It'll also be heavier and take longer to clean. The gas piston and magazine tube on my gun take a good amount of scrubbing to get clean, while my dad's SBE doesn't have a gas piston and doesn't blow fouling onto the mag tube.

sm, where do you put atf? Or do you use it instead of oil (I've been using BreakFree) on the entire gun.

I am by no means a shotgun expert but I find I really like the Benelli M1S90, and M4 offerings. I personally have a Beretta 1201FP, virtual clone of the early Benelli M1 and it will cycle anything I put through from the lightest Walmart bulk pack stuff all the way up to 3 inch bad boys.

My Beretta has a bunch of extra shells hanging off of it and it still cycles just fine, although it is rather comical to see those cheap bulk pack shells lazily roll out of the ejection port, it never misses a beat though.

JeremyIA,

FWIW - The 11-87 Special Purpose WILL NOT shoot any of the very light 7/8 oz budget loads such as the Federal Value packs (100rds). The gases generated by these light loads are not enough to effectivly cycle the action. I presume that an 11-87 Sportsman would also have this problem.

If you look in the instruction manual which can be down loaded on the Remington web site it talks about the minimum loads that are supposed to fully cycle/function in an 11-87.

Other than the above issue I really liked the 11-87 Special Purpose I had.

Regards,
Rob

Get the One that fits the best

Have a Benelli field gun, a Beretta AL391, both my boys have 11-87s - all three brands will shoot anything from trap/skeet/sporting clays to upland and waterfowl. Just clean occasionally - reccommend the one that fits and feels the best to you personally.
