Gun locks grace farmers' gates

I've got a couple of those cable locks sitting around. The only thing they do is occupy valuable drawer space, but for some reason I never throw them out. I keep thinking they'll come in handy some day, but that day hasn't arrived yet.

A bag of trigger locks makes a great improvised impact weapon. Beats a pillow case full of doorknobs.

I love those free gun locks that they give away. I just hate all the firggin keys.

- Keep the hi lift jack on the bumper.
- Keep the winch in the receiver.
- Use one thru brake disc on motorcycle.
- Use another on the shed lock out back.
- I actually use one on my gun that goes back and forth to the range.

It's worse, he said, if someone has firearms and chooses to use the lock on a gate and not a gun, he said. That would be putting a locked gate above family safety.

Actually I think it's just the opposite. The locked gate contributes to family safety. Of course, I have a one year old with only goal in life at this moment, trying to crawl through the doggie door out back before I can catch her. My perspective may be skewed...

I'm glad to see the TN farmers getting some use from their tax dollars.

If you want a laugh, how's this one: My sister-in-law is a police LT. She wanted to know if I needed any gun locks. "No, I lock them in my gun safe."

"You mean you don't put trigger locks on them?"

:banghead:

BTW, if the cable is long enough and you have the thing in the locked position and you slip your hand through the loop and let the two cables run through your fist with the lock poking out the top and flopping around a bit they make a decent improvised impact weapon that can be carried anywhere, even overseas (I travel a lot).

Actually I like that idea! But I'd take a big old mess of keys, attach them to the cable, and hold the lock section and swing it like a flail...

CA law requires a dealer to sell me a lock (not just make sure I have one, I have to buy one from him.), so what's the point?

Locally the conservation range was givin 10,000 to distribute. It caused a major storage problem for them. Anyone who showed ANY intrest was given a box of 20 and told if they wanted more to feel free to take them, they'd give you a whole case if you'd just get them out of their way.

I sorted them by key and kept 2 sets of 4 keyed alike. Used them to lock up my securement gear when I was a flatbed trucker. Gave a bunch to other truckers to lock up their stuff. I don't think more than a dozen of those 10,000 will see use on a gun. I still have those locks (as well as the locks that came with the guns) laying around the house waiting to find a use.

Good news is, the tool sheds and gates they lock will be more likely to protect a child than having them on a gun. It's another perfect example how the governmet can find ways to waste our money in the least efficient means possible.

The lock that came with my Marlin has been very useful for locking my bike up. In fact I use it almost every day.

Hey that isn't a bad idea use some the couple dozen gun locks I have for securing my bike and misc other items.

Why don't we start an organization that gives away gun safes!!! Forget the cheesy little locks why doesn't the goverment buy us something really useful. If you take $30,000,0000 and divide that by $600 that gets you around 50,000 guns safes(or RSCs to some). I bought a nice cannon safe for $600 if we called up Cannon and offered to purchase 50K safes I bet they would be willing to deal with us.

Phase one of Project ChildSafe was funded by a $50 million U.S. Department of Justice grant."
:banghead:

"But we've distributed over 30 million locks,"
:what:

It's worse, he said, if someone has firearms and chooses to use the lock on a gate and not a gun, he said. That would be putting a locked gate above family safety.
I don't know about that. I think locking out the criminals and keeping my gun close at hand puts my family safety pretty high up on the list.

"Some people don't believe in these," he said. "They say that if they had to get the key and unlock it before somebody gets in, then it's not available for protection, but you've got to protect your kids from the gun."
When you lock your car, are you protecting thieves from the car? If not, then why would you think you are protecting your kids from the gun by locking the gun?

Miscreants? Give me a break. They are just using them for something more useful than the original purpose.

Leave it to the government to figure out the best way to waste MY money, and YOUR money too.

Giving away free gun locks sounds like a really great idea, but look what's happening........they aren't being used for thier intended purpose.

Time to reevaluate the program???. Let's just wait and see ......It's darn near a given that more $$$ will be wasted on this before any action is taken.

Oh yeah this is awesome. The Washington State Patrol ordered some of these to hand out. Turns out that the MINIMUM order is 10,000. They are probably still ankle deep in the dang things. They offered them to local businesses to hand out to their employees. There are two CRATES of them leftover in our office.

When I went for my CCW, I was offered the entire box of locks. I wanted one or two in case I ever had to leave my pistol in the car for places that don't allow CCW. (Court house, et al)

Probably sounded like a nice idea in theory back in Washington.

Every time I go to the elementary schhol close to me (polling Place) I am amazed at how many of the bike locks are marked Ruger Mossberg S&W
My little brother and sister both have a Mossberg Bike Lock. I also have a Kimber toolbox lock on a craftsman tool case, doesnt keep it from getting stolen, but it keeps "not me" and "I dont know" from losing my tools.

When they start giving out free guns, minus the locks of course, then I will "sign-up" for the program ;)

Yep, Texas Parks and Wildlife has shipped me cases and cases of 'em to give away in hunter ed. classes. I think now we are down to the last case - in stock anyway. They may load us up again (unsolicited) this summer.

I actually had trouble giving them away to some students. They said "Nah, they gave me all I wanted at the gun show." And yep, next gun show, I attended at Market Hall in Dallas, there was a booth near the front door with a mountain of cases of the same cable locks ...
