What a set of antlers!
When I was in Brady last year there were several locals at the table next to us at the BBQ joint. Talk turned to hunting and one commented that the axis was better to eat than the whitetail. I guess I assumed that if they were on the same range with the same food supply there wouldn't be a difference but perhaps not. I saw several after that but none were set up for a shot. Ended up with a pretty nice wt buck when all was said and done.
I'll be interested to see if you agree with those locals in the cookery aspect.

That is a nice Axis. That is a critter I have always wanted to hunt and just never been able to. But I have seen a few heads on the walls of ranchers and such and that is a good one.

Axis are primarly grazers not browsers like WT. Thus they have a richer darker meat more like beef.

Nice buck!
An older buddy of mine retired to a "mini-ranchette" near Leakey. He had Axis deer wandering through the back of his place. His comment was that it was sorta nice to know he could stick the rifle out the window and shoot a deer, any time of year and any time of day or night--and be legal.
"It just wouldn't feel right, though," he said with a big grin, "if I didn't lie down along side him when I gutted him out."
Some folks just spend too many years hunting on land where they don't belong...

No, just down the road at a ranch leased by San Miguel Outdoors. This place had more animals per acre than I have ever seen. I almost tagged an audad too. They also had mooflon(sp?), red stag, black buck, fallow, and tons of pigs.
Absoultely. I cooked up a backstrap last week and it was the best wild game I've ever had. Not as good as grain-fed beef, but close.

May they continue to do well and spread like fleas then. I wonder if they ever have an over-population problem

Axis are in fact overpopulated in some parts. They will push WT's out of areas and dominate the territory.

Thread drift: Aoudad are also territorial and drive mule deer away from water. Vermin. Somebody who's young and healthy and likes to hike in rough country needs to come to Terlingua and shoot the vermin.
