Well guys - I think all in all a most successful day. My warm thanks to all who came - without you it'd have been a very minor ''do'' - instead I think we all had one blistering good time (Dave's hand did when he touched the M1 hot barrel!).

The morning weather was - frankly - depressing! That sort of rain that seems set in for the whole day. However, the powers that be smiled and we enjoyed what was an almost rain-free afternoon. Even had some clay busting which made for extra enjoyment - despite my crap attempts initially with hand thrower! :rolleyes: :p

Ray's wife Janice was kind in bringing up an assortment of extra food, to go with our grill fair late afternoon - our thanks to her for that welcome effort. After which one more round of blasting!

We gradually packed up as daylight faded and anapex and GWAG were last to leave - and also helped a lot in the brass pickup - tidy up phase - thx guys. caseydog and I somehow BS'd thru another hour before leaving, in pitch dark!

I have some pics hopefully when uploaded and tweaked so - they will appear soon, if I can stay awake - suddenly feel a tad pooped.

Hope all the long distance folks had a safe ride home and will enjoy the rest of our Memorial Day weekend. Thanks again. Pics to come asap.

Beren , sorry about your misadventures with PA's finest, glad it came out well !

Great outing folks , but holy cow am I tired. Hopefully we'll have some pics tomorrow to show the smiles on everyones faces , especially after the rain gave up !! Brought all the guns and ammo in tonite and have a truckload of stuff to deal with tomorrow :eek:

The hand thrower clays was a great break from the norm, I had a blast , I really need to spend more time with that SuperX2

Good to meet all you good folks for the first time , and good to see Anapex and Girl With A Blanket again :p . And thanks for hangin around to pack up the last bits.

Norton I hope your .06 performs up to snuff for ya now , that was a tricky bit to get right , if I hadn't seen that for myself I'd have thought you were crazy.

All in all a very good day , even with the morning rain.

Chris ~ another in a line of good shoots for us

Ray

The trees have already filed protests with the DCNR over P95's repeated efforts to bean them with clays. ;) Seriously, it took me several tries to figure out how to throw them right too, so you weren't alone in your clay troubles! For my part, I had much better success after I figured out I was holding the thrower backwards. (This was after folks had moved on to the eating part; I found a clay and had fun playing 'how many times can Beren toss this clay uprange without breaking it.')

Great food, great people, great fun. Thanks again for making the arrangements and being great hosts, guys. Next time we'll have to setup a webcam for 'THR PA Shoot Live!' Or better - Gong Cam!

A great time everyone! Ray and Chris are to be thanked profusely for making the arrangements as is Janice for the yummy food.

It was great to meet some new friends and have time to catch up with some long time friends.

Ray is an absolute bulldog and magician when it comes to making my recalcitrant Savage 110 work. That was probably one of the most satisfying aspects of the whole day. Anapex's 28 gauge Beretta was up there ( I predict a suddent rush on 28 Gauge over/unders :D ) and so was wailing away on that gong with the STG58.

I rolled back into Annapolis at 11:10pm and all was well with the return trip.

More in the morning......

I predict a suddent rush on 28 Gauge over/unders
Haha - forgot to pick up on that - what a sweet gun. Larry Ashcraft and Steve (sm) will testify to the popularity of that diminutive gauge. Dave - you could have sold that gun, what? Four times! :)

Beren - a slightly ''eventful'' trip home eh! LOL - well as Dave commented elsewhere - no harm no foul - and no bail!! :D

Getting to pics soon as I can.

Next time we'll have to setup a webcam for 'THR PA Shoot Live!' Or better - Gong Cam!

That poor gong !! , started out the day rusty with some orange splotches , by days end it was as shiny as the bottom of a brand new frying pan , not a trace of rust or paint anywhere , just craters !

Live from the shoot could be a blast :D

Ray

The gong was much fun.....very demonstrative of the relative power differences between the .223 cartridge and the 30/06.......223 didn't even faze that 60lb hunk of steel while a couple of shots from the Garand really got a bit of swing going :cool:

Oh, BTW.......as Spot77 and I were heading back out to the paved road, we encountered a group of three teens ambling along toward the range.....any sign of them? They seemed a little shocked to see some actual people cruising along the road......

OK folks, pics - nothing startling, just a ''flavor'' of the day really.

Oh BTW - Paul - no teens spotted by us - just random guys I expect.

portage-07.jpg

Beren and Legionnaire - busy on the wet paper - morning rain - the mist in distance was low cloud obscuring the 500 yd end.

portage-group-11.jpg

And finally!! The group pic. Well - I appear to be about to give birth - or something. Shucks - what a dork center front - holding as I am the electronic release cable!! Guess I just got off my horse! :D

Others - left to right - Don (SolaScriptura), David (Only1Asterisk), Ken (Legionnaire), Erica and Dave (anapex and Girlwithagun), Scott (Spot77), (some dork in front!), Paul (Norton), Chris (Beren), and last but not least Ray (caseydog).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there ya go folks - the ''wild bunch'' get their fame at last! Heck - wish I could go back and stand properly - was it the Prep' H perhaps!? I dunno! :D :D
Oh well - many thx again to all. Scott - email those pics when you have a chance (chrisb@ ........ - OK)
=========================================================
BTW - folks - note - this server with the pics is being relocated May 31 - looks like a downtime of 6 or so hours from approx 2pm EDT or soon after. So if these pics or others of mine fail to show for a bit - that's why.
Nice pics, P95.
Beren with his Mauser? - I forget.
Gasp! That was my K31!
Poor Ken/Legionnaire. He spent the day getting pelted with my brass. The height difference seemed to guarentee accurate head shots, too. It seemed every new gun I brought out would whip the brass that much harder at him.
The wind/wet paper made for an interesting active target. The wind would blow the paper up and around so that you'd only have a second or two for a clear shot at the target. ;) Those were Ken's frames btw - and his paper - and his marker; thanks Ken!
Poor Ken/Legionnaire. He spent the day getting pelted with my brass. The height difference seemed to guarentee accurate head shots, too.
Heh, heh.....maybe we should have gotten side by side with my STG58 and had a contest to see whose brass got thrown farthest :p Some of my brass was going up into the rafters and coming down ten feet away. GirlWithAGun caught a couple of those and Spot77 has got a nice little cresent on his forehead from a particularly vicious case.
Hey Chris.....is that sort of exhuberant extraction a sign of a gas setting that's too far one way or the other? :confused:
Paul - not at all sure of STG gas system details but - sure, if they are travelling like that does sound like backing off would be useful. If you have options like on my FAL - then start near open - and keep closing off whilst getting it to cycle - and then add one more notch to that setting.
Could be tho the extractor/ejector combo send em out high anyways.
Beren - K31 - yep, should have remembered - in fact a closer look at original pic I can see the distinctive bolt area. :)
Aye - left my camera in Norton's Jeep. I'll have a few pixs for y'all in a day or two.
I am TIRED.
Too much fun for one day.
:) Looks like it was a great time! I'm quite jealous in fact. Next time ya'll put a shoot together, I will definatly be there. And i'll bring some toys along too :cool:
Sureeeeeee Rub it in real deep *sobs* guns n food... my 2 favorite subjects, if you had thrown in a motorcycle ride id prolly use a gun on myself for missing it lol, Really wish I could have been there, but just too much going on this weekend It was in the plans, but then last minute things came up :( I will be at the next one, or perhaps just a few of us can get together, I dont think im too far from at least some of you (im in fayette county, Uniontown area) so perhaps a handful of us that are nearby can plan a day sometime in the near future.
Glad Yall had a good and safe time, even if the weather was on the poor side for part of the day :)
Yeah, great day in spite of the weather. Let me add my thanks to Chris and Ray for pulling the shoot together. Great fun, food, and company. My first THR shoot ... most assuredly not the last! A little over two hours drive for me, but I had so much fun that I'd seriously consider twice that distance for a good day shooting with good people.
Beren and others were throwing a lot of brass my direction! I always seemed to be picking up casings that were underfoot ... and wondering "What threw this here? I'm not shooting anything in that caliber!" Nothing down the shirt, though, so no burns. I expect the bruises will go away in a day or two ... :D
Great facility, and generous company. I'd never shot a Rohrbaugh before, nor a Luger, nor anything in .45/70. Too long since I'd shot a P7. Several others were new to me, as well. Thanks, all for your generosity with the hardware. "Show and tell" is always appreciated!
Sorry to hear about the fun on the road, Beren. My trip was uneventful both directions, and enjoyable to boot as I'm in the middle of an unabridged audio version of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers."
Great to meet you all, gang. Thanks!
I had a great time too, and I was soooo tired last night. Didn't get home until 12:15, then had to wake up at 8:00 for church. Everything went well yesterday, with the exception of Anapex's Mauser misfire. :uhoh: Hopefully, that was just a defective bullet. But I definately have my handgun choices down to two now, either the Sig 220 or the Glock 19, both shot perfectly for me. I really liked the AK and the 8mm Mauser as well. The 45-70 and the 375 H&H were not my style, but I just like my shoulder in one piece. :D
As Spot77 were cruising back down I-70 re-hashing the day, we came to the concensus that we had about the exact right number of folks for the facilities. We had enough people to make it feel like a "happening" but it was few enough that everyone had a place to shoot and we could get around to visit with everyone and fondle guns that interested us.
I hope that we can do another shoot at that range in the future. It's a bit of a drive for us, but not at all unmanageable.
Agreed Paul - yes, altho superficially it probably looks a tad ''light'' on numbers- it did work out well, with the size of firing point, range size and rapid disappearance of space due to ''equipment'' :p There wasn't a whole lot of room to move!!
Certainly was a long trip for you guys but - glad you did it and if we can do another then hope for a repeat. Mind you, my back is still killing me - so I think next time I really must travel lighter!!! (yeah, right! :D )
Chip - sounds well encouraging re your new location - has to be I'd guess 10 times better for you. :)
My shoulders are still sore today. I must need to start working out more again. ;) Happy Memorial Day, folks. Maybe start thinking idly about a Labor Day shoot? If the weather is nice, we could stack up some materials just off the pavilion so we have more room.
By August my SBR paperwork should be approved. I'd hoped to have a suppressor by then as well but I still can't decide what to buy. What does all this mean? More muzzle blast for Ken. Maybe I can find a 7.5" barrel for the AR. :)
I'd also like to thank Chris and Ray for putting this together. It was the best day I've had at range in some time. I can't imagine what it took to set it all up. Thanks guys!
David
David - not too bad to set up really - Ray did the most locally - and between us we just did planning etc. Not too bad at all and glad you had an enjoyable day - I reckon we all did (except for my back that iws! Ouch!).
BTW - folks will not see any of my pics at this time - my server is physically being relocated and so none of my stuff will show. Hope to be back on middle of this evening.
Heh, heh....funny thing.....if anyone remembers me bleeding all over my ammo can Saturday from my STG58 biting me somehow......the kids have all been very interested in how I cut my knuckle in such an unusual pattern.
Somehow, I just didn't feel like explaining it :D
I remember you were ''damaged'' - but did not see the juicy bit when the blood was flowing!! :p ''Kids - that got caught in car door'' (yeah right dad!).
Scott - hey dude - where's them pics!! (nudge). :)
