Based on the report, this really sounds good to me . . . one shot hitting COM, or as near as makes no difference. Better hit ratio than 95% of defensive shootings. Give that lady a kewpie doll!

Not to go OT, but it surprises me that Florida seems to have such a statewide recognition of the right to self defense, but has been a big swing state in the last two elections. Maybe that means there's hope for Maryland ::fingers crossed::

Gotta give that lady two huge thumbs up for maintaining her composure, not panicing and, reacting in a manner that likely saved her life.

For those who have never been in a home defense situation you never really know how we might react (although we'd all go macho and say we would).

I hope that this thug had no family that cared about him and leaves the woman alone...free of law suits, etc.

In addition to self/home defense laws that some states are instituting I think they need a 'hold harmless' law that eliminates the senseless and idiotic law suits families bring on after the legal battle has exonerated the person involved.

Widow uses gun, instincts to fend off burgler

Judith Kuntz, 64, hunkered down in her darkened bedroom late Sunday evening, arming herself with a revolver.

A burglar had just broken into her Indialantic home and, fearing for her life, she said she let her instincts take over.

When the burglar, who had a flashlight, entered the room, Kuntz fired one round from her .38-caliber handgun.

Hit squarely in the chest, the unidentified intruder ran outside, where he collapsed and died.

On Monday, Kuntz was still shaken, but she briefly recalled her ordeal.

"I'm doing fine under the circumstances," she said. "I don't take any joy in somebody being dead. My self-preservation instinct took over."

She would not discuss the incident further.

"I don't feel real safe," said Kuntz, who has lived alone since her husband died nearly five years ago. "This has been a horrifying experience."

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said she was justified in defending herself and will not face charges. The revolver was hers, inherited through her family, investigators said.

Agent Lou Heyn of the Sheriff's Office said the unidentified man entered Kuntz's home on Avenida del Mar by pulling the window off a back door.

"Occupied burglaries are rare, and this underscores that it is dangerous for the burglar and the homeowner," Heyn said. "Crime can be a tough career."

The intruder, who was not carrying identification, was described as a white male 35 to 45 years old, with dark-brown hair and a dark-brown mustache. He was wearing light-blue swim shorts, tennis shoes and a blue T-shirt.

Investigators are hoping to identify him through his tattoos. He has a cross on his right hand between his index finger and thumb and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on his upper left arm. There also are the names of at least four women tattooed on his upper right arm.

Ah, thank you! So many news reports say things like "The handgun was registered to her..." or "[shooter] was the licensed owner of the gun..." and whatnot.

Glad to see a news report indicating that an unlicensed, legally-owned pistol isn't a threat to anyone but a bad guy. Simply saying "it was hers" is good enough.

Thank goodness this woman was able to defend herself, otherwise things might have ended on a more tragic note for her.

That's one BG scumbag that won't be causing society anymore trouble!

Yeah - by all accounts and evidence it was a good shoot. Agent Heyn is a good guy and I talked with his partner about the incident recently. The general consensus is that the victim - (and by that I mean the woman whose house was broken in to) - made one hell of a shot, and was in the clear.

+1 for the good guys.

Florida is only a swing state because Miami-Dade and Broward dump about half a million votes in the lap of whoever bears the closest resemblence to Karl Marx. The entire rest of the state is far more sparsely populated but controls the state legislature. We also tend to be a bit more conservative than the Miami crowd.

I live a few miles just up Highway A1A from aforementioned armed grandma, and Brevard County has been rather nice with respect to firearms ownership. The sheriff had no problem signing for my NFA Form 4 paperwork, and the Satellite Beach chief of police signed my C&R FFL paperwork, with the only question being would I take the time some day to look at his balky M1 Garand and perhaps fix it.

So I'd wager if the police said it was a justified shooting, she'll get her gun back, no problem.

This ain't the People's Republik of California, ya know...

I think we need to arrange a Brevard County Shoot sometime soon. Weather's great lately.

I'll try and ascertain whether or not the firearm was returned to the owner or not within the coming week. I'll let ya know what I find out.

Or maybe the tatoos where his list of rape victims. Good riddance to the scumbag!
