What is you vote for best service pistol for the money?

Sadly the Glocks finish runs circles around the XD's. Perhaps thats where the extra money goes, into the finish.

I really like my XD but the finish is sub-par for a service gun....

best value

CZ 75 (real deal) or Browning Hi-Power *clone* by FEG or Arcus.

In plastic pistols, behind the above metal ones, I'd rank them first Steyr, then Spgfld XD, then Taurus 24/7, in bang for the buck.

I'd say it's probably the CZ-75 (which in my area undercuts the XD9 Service by at least $40). The SP-01 looks like it'll be a better gun, but it's more expensive and I haven't heard of many real world experiences with them.

My XD-9 (or the calibre of your choice.) 7500+ rounds and only one FTF at round 60!

That is true but they do make a SS slide version as well. That is what I got and I only paid $430 with shipping and FFL on a new one with two hi-caps. That is why I consider it the best value. $430 OTD for a new SS XD-9 with hi-caps and it shoots great! I know the Ruger P-95 is a darn fine gun for the money as well because I used to have one but it is not as accurate or as refined and it is not that much cheaper really.

As for the Glock, I would not pay a dollar more for one than for a XD. I don't think the XD gives up anything to the Glock and in fact, it seems a much more ergonomic grip.

I finally had a chance to check one of those out yesterday. I just couldn't get into it. All the plastic on the upper and the build and feel just didn't arouse much in me. Trigger and sights were nothing to call home about either. Didn't feel well put together. Especially for $+750.

And I am not against poly guns either. But I couldn't get the point of it. It's a small round, but a large firearm with a big mold poly upper and lower.

I was thinking it would be something, but it didn't turn out to be. Now I didn't fire it, but it would really have to impress me then. Maybe next time...

There is nothing the Glock will do that a XD can't do for at least $100 less.

I will gladly pay the extra $100 for the tennifer treatment alone. The XD is simply a Croation imitation of the Glock, and not a very good one at that.

I'll go for the CZ-PO1,
then the Cz-75s.

The next ones will be the Glocks in 9mm.

CZ-75B, Ruger P-95, and Glock 17. (Maybe the XD, but I'm not familiar with that gun.) One of these should fit you and your tastes. All are solid, cost-effective weapons.

I agree that the blued finish on the XD is sub-par but I got the SS version and it was still $100 less than the Glock. I can't for the life of me see where that Glock is worth $5 more than the XD let alone $100 more! I am not bashing the Glock by saying this. I am only saying that the XD is just as good as the Glock but at a slightly lower price. I am not saying the Glock is a POS because it costs a bit more, only that it is not the best bang for the buck. Something tells me that the $100 difference in price is due mostly to exchange rates and labor costs rather than any difference in quality.

Look at the CZ, for the money you get a lot of gun. No one would say that they are poor quality just because they cost less than a Glock or SIG.

It reminds of some story I heard someone tell on a movie about a Native American who owned a pottery stand in the desert where he sold to tourists, some cost $5 and some cost $10 but they were all the same. When his kid asked him why he had the same pot selling for different prices he said, "Some people like to pay $5 and some people like to pay $10" :D

I think that is a good story because it is true.

I have owned the SA XD 9, Sub Compact 9 and the Glock 17

My vote, a Glock 17 for three reasons. The XD grips is a bit small for my hands and the Glock 17 can actually hold 33 rounds via the Glock 18's magazines. Non of these 3 pistols ever failed me, so in terms of reliability, I hold them equal. I did note one "problem" with the XD magazine design when using the "grip extender". One can easily insert the magazine backwards. When I bought my XD Sub Compact, the salesman did so. He bent the magazine's front edge, which in turn lead to feeding erors. Once straightened, it was fine again. The Glock magazines do seem more durable. But, all the same, I am NOT a gun expert. This is only my opinion based on very limited experience. But, I did sell my XDs and kept a Glock 17 "American Heros" limited edition...very sweet.

Another vote for the CZ75/85. I own a 85B and an XD and have extensively fired Glocks.

The CZ is cocked and locked capable which is the mode I like best by far. Fires with a hammer fall, which beats any striker in my book, and the trigger doesn't feel "sproingy."

Better for pistol whipping too, being an all steel frame. :D ;)

I recently had the same dilema you did. I went a diffrent route then the others suggested and brought a Taurus PT-99. Im sure your aware that its the clone of the Beretta 92. Maybe clone isn't such a good description. The PT-99 is built just as well(using Berettas own machinery), and the saftey/decocker is placed in the right place. It carries 17 rounds of 9mm, and the gun is under $500 NIB. I brought the blued version but the stainless was only $10 more!! This is a jem of a pistol tat is often overlooked, or mislabeled a "cheap knock off".

I'm gonna go out on a limb here (just to be arbitrary) and say ... for the value -- Taurus PT-92. Although I'm a huge CZ fan (if you're talking 9mm's), I simply think the frame mounted safety w/decocker, mag capacity, acceptable accuracy, total reliability, durability and finally, price, make the Taurus best service pistol for the money . Next up would be the CZ-75/85 for the ergonomics, accuracy, durability and just general "coolness" factor ...
