Attempting to figure out which pistols meet these criteria:
1) 9mm
2) double-stack mags
3) ~4" or greater barrel length
4) all steel construction (carbon or stainless)
5) currently in production

Partial list:
1) Sig ST models (226/229)
2) Beretta 92 STEEL I
3) 9mm 1911s
4) CZ pistols
5) BHP

Anything else? I'm pretty new to semi-autos. Thanks!

Other than widebodies like some of the the Para-Ordinance, STI, and SVI models, 1911's have single-stack magazines. The STI and SVI pistols are not all steel; these are based on an innovative frame design. In 9x19, the usual single-stack magazine capacity is nine. Some people use .38 Super magazines to get a tenth round into the magazine.

Of all the pistol manufacturers on your list, my personal preference is the CZ. The CZ-75B is a lot of pistol for the money, especially if you add the Kadet kit.

1) Sig P226ST meets all of your criteria, unfortunately P229ST is only available in .40S&W
2) Beretta 92FS Inox meets all of your criteria
3) The Springfield and Kimber full-size, and the STI Trojan 9mm 1911s meet most of your your criteria, except these all use single stack mags, like all good 1911s should!
4) CZ 75B (full size) meets all of your criteria
5) BHP meets all of your criteria

All really great choices, not a bad choice to be made here AFAIK!

-S&W has some nice steel double stack 9mms

-I love my CZ 75B. These are double stack steel 9mms

-SIG has a couple models that fit your criteria I believe

-Of course, the granddaddy of them all, and according to many still the best of the bunch, the Hi-Power

-I wasn't aware that the Berettas were steel framed, I thought the 92s were alloy, but of course I am far from a Beretta expert

-If you are willing to consider alloy (they are metal and a good 9mm alloy frame will last a long, long time, and many are heavy enough for comfortable range use) Taurus makes several nice double stack 9mms. I only add this since several people have suggested alloy models.

Ruger P89
He said he was looking for a steel frame, the Ruger P89 and other metal framed autos are aluminum alloy. Of course, it is plenty heavy for comfortable range use, and it is definately a strong gun.

While I love my BHP, I think getting a single action pistol presents you with too many limitations. Have one for competition by all means but for CCW/home defense something with a DA/SA, DAO or Safe Action trigger would make more sense.

astra a100

though no longer produced, the astra a100 is a great little gun whose mags, though expensive, hold 17 rds. it's very accurate & not too big. w/ a spare mag you're carrying 35 rds ready to go.

How exactly do you come to that conclusion? There is absolutely nothing wrong with a SA pistol for self-defense/CCW. In fact, many here think they are better than a DA/SA due to not having to deal with the transition from DA to SA and a faster more accurate first shot and many think they are better than DAO due to a quicker and lighter trigger pull= quicker more accurate shots. Me, I like them all, but I am truly perplexed at why anyone would think SA pistols don't have self-defense applications or in any way have limitations that other action types don't.

Para Ordnance offers their answer to this riddle in both single action and double action versions: SA = P18.9 and DAO = LDA18.9

And that's actually 18+1 rounds capacity, without getting into extended magazines.
