Given the same kind of rifle and same weight bullet, I can't tell the difference in "kick" between the .308 and .30-06.

Do you know how far 1000 yards is?

3000/5278 ths of a mile. Over half a mile.
That is not a 1000 yard gun.
Get a 338 Lapua or 50 bmg if you plan on shooting that far.

Yes anyone can buy one.

Unless your 30-06 is a heavy barrel, the recoil with one of these will be less.

Savage rifle have a deserved reputation for accuracy. It will do as well as or better than just about any other factory rifle at a 1,000 yds. However most people who shoot at that distance use highly customized rifles.

Yeah Do you konw how long that is... Do you golf? it is two good par fives in a row. ten football fields, over a half mile. can you see that far?

what size group can you shoot at 100 yards. no offense but if you need to ask about whether or not a round will be good at a thousand yards, then you have not shot enough to be good enough yourself at a thousand yards.

The savage will be as good a rifle as you can buy for the money, better than most infact. But are you a thousand yards good? I am not not ashamed to admit it too. thousand yard shooters are VERY few and far between.

"ok, im looking at a .308 savage for my next gun http://www.savagearms.com/10flp.htm
i was wondering just cause it says law enforcement, can anyone purchase this rifle? how accurate is it? will it be good for 1000yds.
and last question how much does a .308 "kick" compared to my 30-06?"

1. yes

2. very

3. for you, yes

4. similar

hey pete yea i golf. the reason being i want a long range rifle at an affordable price so i can shoot varmints at the back of the field, which is about 800 yds. i dont really plan to shoot much more than that, just threw out the number cause it could happen.

The .308 can definitely be a 1000-yard cartridge, but it's not going to give you reliable hits on varmints at that distance: little will. You'll have to be satisfied with making plenty of shots for the occasional hit.

Accuracy at 1000 yards is a function of your skill and the quality of the weapon. I shot 1000 yard competition with the 30-06 for many years and was competitive. Now, some are going to say that the .308 is not the same cartridge as the 30-06, but I've never found that the bullet is aware of this after it leaves the barrel. A 180gr Sierra Boattail, .308 diameter at 2750fps is the same, whether it comes out of .308 rifle or a 30-06 rifle.

The .308 was developed to take advantage of the newer powders, which did not have as much bulk as the older powders, for the same energy curve. It saved on the cost of brass and gave a smaller, slightly lighter package for the same number of rounds.

If you are shooting varmints at ~800 yards, you might want to load up a lighter bullet. I've used the 150 for varmints and was reasonably pleased with the performance. However, I went back to the 180 gr, to get the same balistics as my big game load.

Practice my friend and YES if the rifle is acutate at say 500 or 600 yards it will most likely be acurate at 1K. Remember it is not a match rifle so do not expect it to group over and over with repeated shots at those distances. There are tactical matches and F class long range matches you can try it on.
Use it for what you want but do not expect to hit a small rodent at those yardages all the time unless you are in a wind tunnel with no wind. The nice thing about using a scope at those ranges is you see the conditions in REAL time and with a few years of practice you will know what to do to keep it in the middle.
Just love to use the open sight ar15 against them at 600 yards any/any matches. A few of us are trying the ar15 at long range palma type of matches also with a little success. They are working on it. If the 223 works at long range you know the 308 will and has for many years.

Ok fine you can see a thousand yards, now if you can and are willing to shoot that far, then I would not get a 308 for that but still buy that rifle in 6.5x55 and then have a good smith rechamber it to 6.5 x .284. That is the only round I see contiunally getting hits out at longer distances with the guys I go prairie dogging with. The lesser recoil and better ballistics of the 6.5 bullets make it a better choice.

If you do have the distance to shoot that you are also going to need a ramped scope mount base in order to get the scope enough elevation.

"...it says law enforcement..." That's marketing. Nothing more. It's the exact same rifle as any other
"...how much does a .308 "kick" compared to my 30-06..." They're ballistically identical. Same felt recoil in like rifles.
The .308 has been used in 1,000 yard matches for eons. Use 190 grain Match bullets though. Factory doesn't cut it either. And learn how to dope the wind. 1,000 yards is a very long way.
