Went online shoppping today for Wolf 7.62x39, and was rudely suprised to find out that just about every place I checked is "Temporarily out of stock."

Did the factory burn down? Is the Iraqi Army buying up the entire world's supply? Is the ATF being dicks about importing it? Where'd the ammo go?

I think it is probably a function of possibly a greater international demand, and greater domestic demand due to what happened in New Orleans. I am sure there are other reasons as well.

I went to a gun show last weekend in Pasadena, TX. There were two different tables selling Wolf in 7.62X39, 5.56, and 5.45. One guy had .308 and pistol calibers as well. One of the guys is almost always at the shows in Pasadena selling Wolf ammo. I bought some 5.56 and some of that Wolf .22 LR. I have not ever tried the Wolf .22 though everyone says good things about it.

The HCGA gun show is in Houston next week. Don't sell ammo there though.

Okay - So What's "The Deal with Wolf Ammo Quality?

For a couple of years now, I have seen signs on the doors or windows of indoor ranges and I've heard the scuttlebutt that Wolf Ammo is harmful to firearms and therefor isn't welcome.

What exactly is the SCOOP on that? Some people love its low costs, and others act like you're going to give them AIDS if you use it. What is the story with Wolf Ammo ??

Some ranges don't like the steel core bullets ripping up their expensive backstop. Others dislike the... black-pepper-ish scent it has. Others are greedy and want to reload the brass and sell it for a premium, which can't be done with steel. And some believe that ammo that's that inexpensive must be dangerous.

Its out of stock right now because all the people *cough* that ordered it in september are waiting for the december shipment. If you order now, you might get some in 2037.

HA! Don't complain about Wolf...the supply of XM193 is real tight. First it was Q3131a, now it's this...even AE .223 is selling out in a lot of places. All that is available is the XM855PD, which is a 3rd tier reject load, and that is selling for premium price.

A lot, I mean a lot of AR-15 snobs are finally biting the bullet (haha) and buying up Wolf .223 like crazy. Before the .223 shortages, Wolf = pure garbage that would never be run through their rifles...

I'd say a number of factors are causing ammo to go up in price and for supply to dwindle. A major factor is uncertainty these days. More non-SHTF anticipators are now changing their thinking and are doing some shopping post-Katrina. When regular folks start hoarding SHTF ammo, we "extremists" are inconvenienced. Due to gas prices, UPS is jacking up their shipping price. Ammo is heavy. Then there are wars all over the place, all of which consume either AR or AK ammo....

Pasadena Gunshow had plenty of x39 ammo.

I can still walk into walmart and get my 223 45gr HP WWB 40 rnd value pack.

Gander Mountan has WAY too much UMC value pack 223....

I think its a case of your location, more than anything else...

I went to a gun show this past weekend and 7.62 x 39 was selling at $3.00 a box of 20. The vendors say they can't get it in any quantities. Buy it when you see it, I think it will only get worse.

I was shopping INTERNET vendors...they all say they're backordered. Non-Wolf Russian brands (Silver Bear, Golden Bear, etc) are in short supply, as well. The only stuff everyone seems to have in x39 is the Yugo stuff.

So how does the Yugo shoot?

Goring sacred cows...

Why all the Wolf complaining? Well they had to shoot it to complain. Most reloaders can't load substantially cheaper than commercial ammo. They make up for it with quality (hopefully). There are many among us who simply enjoy shooting despite the fact that ammo can be expensive. My guess is that ammo cost is the single most influencial aspect of the .22LR's popularity. Now when a manufacturer like Wolf is suddenly able to sell .45 ACP for less than many manufacturers price their 9mm people can't wrap their minds around a good thing. Rifle loonies are a special breed who truly push the envelope of accuracy expectations. To that end, accuracy is prized more than frugality. Frankly, the dumbest things I've heard that related to firearms were said by range officers who felt that their occupation requires the public broadcast of thier opinions.

Actually, I was only talking about rifle ammo, especially 7.62x39. 7.62x54R 148gr seems to be in short supply as well.

I load my own handgun ammo.

Supply & demand

Aside from availability, the price for 7.62 x 39 seems to be going way up. A box of 20 used to be $1.95 is now $2.95. The spam cans used to be $55 are now 72 or more. I should of bought a pallet load a year ago.
:(

For those wondering about the Yugo, I have found it for about $2.50 (Wolf goes for $2.95 here) but theres only 15 rounds wrapped in there. I found it to shoot just as well, its 144 gr, seems to be just as accurate and reliable (never jammed, but then it is in an AK after all) and not all that dirty, although it is corrosive so cleaning properly is important. As an alternative since I cant get wolf at times here in colorado, I have been using Silver Bear and am really liking it so far. Very clean, zinc (i think) cartridge with no sticking or feeding problems even in a hot gun. Has anyone noticed recoil or trigger slap differences with different ammo makers? It might just be in my head but the Silver Bear seems to be "gentler" compared to the Wolf

Hmm. I might go ahead and get another case at the next show. I bought an SKS so now I can justify it as having 2 guns to supply. :)
