Just stay away from pine dowels (don't want pine tar as an additive) ... Go with oak dowels and seal them with tung oil and a light coat of wax and you should have no problems.

I use a similar setup in two gun safes and have had no problems at all. I used a piece of 1x4 with the dowels inserted at the angle needed for each gun. Once you get two guns on the rack, it will support itself against the back of the safe, so no mounting is required. They have worked great for me and save a lot of space.

I was looking at this as an alternative to the wood dowel rack. Looks like it might work.

The only thing I think about is: do I want something going inside my bore that will press against the side of the bore (even softly like a wood dowel) in the exact same place always? Every time you take that gun on and off, the dowel is probably going to touch the inside of your barrel in the same place every time, not including the spot where it will come to a rest every time it is put back. Soft wood vs forged steel is no match, but I'd find a way for the dowel to rest under the barrel, not inside it. Maybe I'm too anal about my bore, but I'd figure out another way.

I saw one guy who used brass rods for something similar. That could possibly be better, since the brass won't absorb moisture.
