yonder I just have to ask...

Hows the CCW in that thing? :neener:

With the sporran in that picture, I can carry a snubby.

I have a couple of other sporrans that will handle a medium frame auto.

If I'm wearing a jacket I can also go IWB or lower back.

But no I don't wear a thigh holster! :neener:

Seems there is a lot of controversy over whether he was in "proper" formal kilt attire.

Yeah... you'll get that from the weekend wallaces and the plastic paddies. You know, the types that will only break out the kilt in a "safe" environment like the highland games, celtic music fest, wedding, funeral, etc.

The kilt traditionally is an everyday garment that is appropriate for everything from sporting games with the boys to hunting to formal events.

The full regalia that most think is necessary today was born out of a period of Scottish romanticism that wasn't based so much on historical fact as ideals of a pseudo-fantasy world. Kilt rental shops make a fortune on perpetuating these myths.

There is also a myth that you have to wear your clan tartan. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the clan chiefs will tell you that you're more than welcome to wear their tartan so long as you're doing so respectfully.

Hmmm... I wear my Utilikilts quite regularly (I'll be wearing one at the BACA National Conferance). For dressy occassions, I've got a nice MacCleod tartan...

Do I occassionally get greif? Yep. I also get the "So... you Scottish?" line (to which I reply "No... i'm comfortable")...

As for carrying: I'm trying to get Eric of HBE Leatherworks to make a sporran that is fitted for a Colt Mustang and reloads. In my UK, IWB carry is easy (and someone is supposely sending me one of those inner thigh holsters)...

There is all sorts of room to hide stuff in a kilt. expensive ones are made with an enormous amount of fabric several yards worth you can try lifting them up but there is just more fabric to fill the gap.

Thats true the kilt isn't really scottish but the way they register sex offenders painting yourself in Woad and playing the pipes would get you on the registry.

Woad was more on a whole celtic scale too anyways whats really scottish. Basket hilted claymores?

So some kids can show up to school wearing bandanas, gang colors, pants hanging around their cracks and get away with it because it’s “their culture”, yet some white kid shows up in a kilt … and is out of bounds?

Actually, gang attire and colors are usually forbidden, or at least they frequently were when I was in high school.

I think you can go here if you need a tactical kilt... :)

Actually, they have all kinds of Utilikilts, EXCEPT the Tartan kilts.

Want hammer loops? They got em! Wanna fit a six pack in your pockets? They got em! Wanna wear a nice black kilt with hidden pockets? They got 'em.

As for CCW in a UK, I do it all the time. Just put it in a pocket holster, and away you go. Also, the Wilderness Safepacker should work.

The most grief I get is from kids, believe it or not. The adults just nod. A note to the single men out there: CHICKS DIG KILTS. I get hit on more by chicks even with my wedding ring on, than I do in pants. waaaay more often.

hrmm chicks may dig kilts but that prevents two problems the way I see it. 1 with the exception of said utility kilt Kilts are expensive 2. chicks are expensive.

I still have more guns to buy!

I have a $ 1300 formal Prince Charlie kilt outfit that I bought in Edinburgh that I wore to my wedding and other formal events, and three other less formal kilts that I wear to the Highland Games and such. I can easily conceal a J-frame in either my casual or dress sporran.

As a middle-aged, heterosexual, married, parent of teenagers executive, I am long past caring what others think of my style of dress. It is a bonus, however, if I can wear something that mortifies my children.

Hey, McSmartie of the McBookreading clan, the kilt is an English invention that we made you Scots wear since you didn't even own pants!
/s/ El Tejon, your friendly English ruler:neener:

Ahem, the small kilt is an 1800's English fashion invention made as attempt to emulate rustic manly Scotts. It came about well after the English banned the wearing of the feileadh mhór (great kilt) following the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the 1745 rebellion (they also tried to ban the bag pipes, but kept mistaking angry cats for violators). The Scotts prior to 1747 (and after 1600) wore folded plaids (not to be mistaken for the absurd wardrobe in "Braveheart"). Prior to 1600 there is no credible documentation of the wearing of a feileadh mhór.

Sigh, so we see the mighty ElT is no more knowledgable about Scotts fasion history that the VPC is about handguns.

hso: according to my dictionary, fèileadh is "masculine" so mòr would not be aspirated/lenited.

Thus: fèileadh mòr

The modern version is the fèileadh beag (little kilt)

BTW, the "claymore" sword comes from claidheamh mòr

Now, what I want to know is if a Colt SAA in a cross-draw holster goes with a kilt ...? :D

Another piper here. And I wore a kilt to my high school senior prom to boot.

For CCW, you can keep a fairly large pistol in a sporran (my piping instructor carried a Colt Mustang .380 that way). Shoulder holsters are also an option - IMO, a classy older .32 (Colt 1903, PPK, etc) is just right to wear with a kilt and tuxedo vest & coat.

ewwwwww

:what: :D

That was hillarious.

As for seeing his legs, I think any kid with enough pride to do that would be also wearing the high socks, so really not much if any leg would have been showing at all.

This started as a discussion about rights

It's strayed into proper kilt etiquette. You realize what's happening here?

It means you guys are skirting the issue!

Wouldn't carryin CCW under a kilt bring new meaning to "this is my rifle, this is my gun...."

Maybe the principal was upset because the kid wore the traditional underwear with kilts? That would've been (ahem) ballsy.

ROTFL! I've got to my pants-clad rear in gear...

For daily-type use, my Utilikilt has big pockets, a model 36 S&W fits nicely. The belted plaid I use for more formal and/or dressy occasions, you can put the 36 in the sporran; I also found that a IWB holster in the back will hold a compact .45 and the section draped over the shoulder covers it nicely.

Underwear? What's that?!?

In the original vein of this thread, if it's good enough for Prince Charles to wear to functions of State, it should be good enough for a kid at his High Screwel prom.

It's all part of the anti-violence drive in schools... after all, someone might get kilt!

Pete, where do you think it got it's name? Some jealous Englishman called it a skirt, and the rest is history.
