I have a few manuals on older rifles that he does not have listed. I'd be glad to send him copies, but I'm having some Java "issues" with my computer, and his Java routines are shutting down my browser before I can get his contact info. If you can give me his contact info, or send him mine, I'll be happy to send him copies of the manual.

hate to bother anyone with legal technicalities, but i browsed through a couple of those manuals and everyone I saw was either copyrighted or was mysteriously missing page 2 (where copyright info is often found)

it is a fantastic resource though.

and now back to our victim-less crime-spree...

1. He's not selling them.

2. Most gun makers will give you a free manual if you ask (might even be required by law in the U.S?)

3. An educated gun user is a safe gun user.

I think that copyright issues are probably non-issues.

If all the gunmakers get together and decide to make him stop they probably could--I just don't see it happening. As of right now he's probably actually saving them shipping money.

The only problem I see is that manuals tend to be updated every so often--obviously it's not going to be easy--probably impossible actually--to make sure all of those manuals are the latest versions.

It is a nice thing to try to do, but it is a bit misguided.
Aside from the obvious copyright issues, he might be distributing old versions when newer ones have additional important safety information in them. You'd do best to ask the manufacturer for another one first, even if they want a bit of money for it.
If he was distributing manuals from companies that had gone out of business I could understand that, but product-liability laws are so hell-acious in the USA anyway, is there any existing US-based gun company that will refuse to supply owners manuals?

I'm sure that if any manufacturer sends him a cease-and-desist order he will take their manuals off of his site. Until then, he has committed no offense.

Not true.

Copyright law does not stipulate that the copier must be making a profit in order to be guilty of infringement. By the act of making a copyrighted document available from a source other than the authorized publisher, the "pirate" is depriving the holder of the copyright of legitimate income. If Smith & Wesson owns the copyright to their manuals, they are within their rights to give them away. That does not give anyone other than the copyright holder a right to copy them and give them away.

Real men don't read instructions. Unless it has a picture of a nude female on it.
 
Hawkmoon, you are right, but I don't see gun manufacturers shutting him down simply because distributing the manuals online does each manufacturer and the gun industry as a whole a huge favor.
 
Dang 22/45

The only manual I need (besides collectors purposes) is for my ruger Mk II 22/45. The whole pull trigger, rotate forward, insert dissasembly lever into slot 3a, pat tummy while rubbing head thing really gets to me. If it werent such a good shooter I'd swap it.
