Local dealer has a M36 that I'm interested in. Old enough to be in its original 2 piece blue box and about like new. Pretty firm at $325. Its just like the one pictured below. My question is if this is what is called a "round butt", as I would want to change the grips to wood boot grips.

Yes, that's a round butt. I think all the Chief's Special revolvers were RB. It's a great handgun and the price really isn't out of line for the condition you describe with the box.

The ad you posted for a picture looks like a fine specimen at a good price too! I don't see a drag line on the thing.

Here's the picture from the GunsAmerica ad:

No, they also had a square butt, which looked a little cooler (imho) but didn't fit the hand as well for accurate double action work. Also the RB is more concealable.

Iggy if you are asking if that is a square butt, no; it is a round butt with boot grips. A square butt has a longer frame and the butt projects at a shallower angle to the bore axis.

Big G.. Nah, I was just showin' what a round butt with spegels looked like:)

Whole Hog You give up some control for concealibility.. I wouldn't think much of them if I was trying to wrestle with it with 357's in it.;)

So they are Spegal grips.

Actually what I was asking was if they were made from cocobolo wood that Mr. Spegal calls "better-than-standard", meaning really nice. It's definitely a classy looking piece.

Good, not great price also.
Well, maybe in your neck of the woods, but up here-- 325 bucks is a great price for a mint condition 36. I've not been able to get a NIB or LNIB Model 36 for less than $350. We seem to have a lot of buyers willing to pay stiff prices for any pre-lock S&W revolvers here in the Evergreen State ...

I'd just like to take this moment to say that 36's are beautiful.
I sold mine b/c I was short of funds. I wish I still had it. :(
When I sell my house in Atlanta, I think I'll by another one.

Whole Hog.. Those Spegel grips are standard grade Granadillo smooth grips from Lightning Arms Sports..

If you go to their site, you can pick the grip you want.. They have pictures of the specific grips.. You gets what you sees..

LAS is a little more expensive, but you will have the grips in about two days and you see what you are getting before you buy.

Thanks for the tip about LAS, they're bookmarked now. I ordered my grips directly from Mr. Spegel, but it took about a month to get them.

I'm thinking the Panama Cocobolo grips would look real nice on my Model 60.

Iggy, good suggestion. Having looked, I might try a couple pair of the $3.99 rubber type to begin with, depending on how much kick it has. Talking as if I've bought it already. Prob be sold by time I get there; but then again, he's had it for a good while. :)

Iggy--

Old but still kicking

Mine is pre 36, has the old style cylinder release and uncheckered grips, and it has gone everywhere with me except to The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts since I picked it up for about $100 30 years ago. I work out with it regularly, and have probably put in the neighborhood of 5000 rounds through it. It now rides in a Pager Pal holster, very discreet and easily accessed, except in a car. Not a rig to wear if you're sporting a spare tire, but that's not much of an issue with me, yet. It's not a target weapon, but I keep them all on an 8.5x11 target at 25yds, and I'm happy with that.;)

Emailed my dealer yesterday and he knocked off $25, so with tax its $321 OTD. Told him it was a done deal..

Glockdaddy: thats a mighty fine looking one you have for sale in the classifieds...and a very early one too.

Sucker!!!

Seriously, I am sure you will enjoy your 36. They are a neat little gun.

Enjoy!!

Keep us posted on what you do with grips etc..

Pictures are required!!

I think you done good!

A fair price is what you are willing to pay and the seller is willing to take. It has absolutely nothing with "blue book" or anything else. When I buy a gun I don't worry too much about what somebody paid last week or anything else. In the big scheme of things, I always spend enough on accessories, ammo, reloading equipment and supplies that the initial cost of the firearm really becomes insignificant. Of course, if you are buying safe queens as an investment the initial purchase price becomes much more significant. Your new Chief's Special should give you decades of comfort or enjoyment.

Picked it up today/Who does Action Jobs?

And upon "cleaning" it find that the patch comes out nearly as clean as when it went in. Examining the area around the forcing cone with magnifying glasses i see no residue at all. So the 36-7 is almost a NIB. SA trigger feels really good, but the DA leaves a lot to be desired. Will shoot it tomorrow if it doesn't rain to see how it does...or how i do. :D

Ala Dan: Serial is BNY404*....does that make it about 1994?

Shoot45, you said: "Your new Chief's Special should give you decades of comfort or enjoyment." Don't I wish, but at 71 I might not be good for too many of them. :cuss: But someone on down the pike will surely enjoy it, especially if I like it well enough to have an action job done on it.

Any recommendations as to who does good action jobs on these little Smiths and about what it costs?

Before deciding on an action job, I would venture to suggest that you spend time dry firing it double action for a while every day. It should smooth out with use, and you always have the option of having it done at any time if it doesn't.
