What are my sight options for my 640? It currently has the ramped, serrated black FS. I like the one with the orange insert on the 342, etc. Where can I find one?

The other option would be the XS Big Dot. WOuld I have to mod my 640 in any way to accept this sight? I remember glunblast installing one on a 342 and they drilled out the pin hole.

Look down a few lines for the "Front Night Sights on a Snubby" thread. If your 640 has a pinned sight, you have lots of options. I have XS Big Dot tritium sights on a S&W 337 and a Ruger SP101 and like them.

I'm planning to get a tritium front sight on my 442, it's just a matter of time.

Are there other choices besides XS Big Dot?

Other Choices

XS offers a smaller standard dot with or without tritium. Meprolight offers a tritium sight with white outline. A custom sight dovetailed into the barrel could be made with or without gold bead.

How about the orange insert FS--where can I buy one of those? I tried to navigate the Brownells website, and I was able to find the replacement serrated black blade for $13 but didn't find the orange specimen.

When I said "lots of options" I may have been overstating it a little, but if you do a Google search for "pinned front sight for revolver" you can turn up quite a few listings. I think any sight with a tenon could be made to work.

I've been trying to figure out what's involved in installing a Big Dot front sight on a model 60 or 640. Does it replace the existing sight without any gunsmithing? Is it a do-it-yourself kind of job or must the gun go to a gunsmith?

Dollar An Hour:
Do you know of someone who replaces the fixed FS of a 442 with alternate sights? I've been looking to do the same to my 442.

I had an XS Big Dot installed on the "beast", my Smith 340SC. It makes the front sight really easy to pick up. Go to www.gunblast.com and check the archives to see installation instructions.
