.30-.30 Powder recommendations?

I absolutely love a max load of H335 under a 150 grain sierra. EXTREMELY accurate in at least 8 30-30's I've tried it in. Also just about the fastest as well. AND- it meters very easily.

There- I've said my piece.

GooseGestapo turned me into a Reloader15 believer. It's far more accurate in my 30-30's than anything else I've tried (and I've pretty much been thru the Hodgdon and AA lineup).

35gr under a Sierra 150gr ProHunter (WW cases, Rem primers) is my pet load. It'll give me 1 1/2" five shot groups @ 100 yards out of my 16" scoutified Marlin 30-30, and will give an honest inch in my Savage 99 30-30.

W-748 (32 to 33 grains) Remington or Winchester cases cleaned and trimmed. CCI 200 primers. 170 grain Flat nose Speer bullet. It don't get no better then this....:D

30-30 loads

I know you are using jacketed bullets. Consider cast lead bullets with gas checks and lower velocity loadings. Cheap, fun, and accurate. Here is mine, of course, others may have their favorites.

113 gr gas checked round nose.(cast from wheel weights)
cci large rifle primer
case trimmed to length
8.3 gr IMR PB , usually used for shotgun loads, check a manual always!

Avg Velocity: 1444 fps
extreme spread: 79
Std Dev. 21
ten shots, 20" barrel Winchester Model 94
2" group or so at 50 yards, plenty enough for fun.

Dunno about anyone else and stick powders, but I've got a cheapie little ol' Lee drop measure and it works just fine with any extruded powder. I've weighed lots of charges of both ball and extruded powder, and couldn't find a statistically significant delta in accuracy between either type when dropped by this little $30 Lee thing.

About the only powder that's given me trouble with it is AA1680, simply because it's so fine that it tends to get into the works of the drop if I'm not careful.

Guess I'm a traditionalist. I've been using IMR3031 forever with the .30-30. I have some good loads for it, see no reason to change, really. Stick powders are a little more a pain in measures, though, than ball powders.

Yup. To me the one goes with the other. Plus, IMR 3031 has a certain smell that always reminds me of the classic levergun.

RL-7, 4198, and H-335 have all worked quite well in both 30 WCF's I shoot with all manner of bullets.

The RL-7 worked BEST with the cast, the IMR worked best with the lighter jacketed, and the 335 worked best with everything.

YMMV

PS...try some Trailboss! I am sounding like a friggin' parrot here cuz I just got through telling someone else that...TB is some sweet stuff for light loads/cowboy loads...

I have had good luck with 3031 and rl7.

Here is 50 shots at 100 yards off the bench. I would bet it was with 3031 and a seirra 150 FPJ but I don't remember for sure. It was accurate enough for me and open sights.

Yup Peter...That's what my old 94 does using W-748 at 100 yds. off the bench. Literaly remove the three inch dot from the target...Good shootin'...

Load used posted above...:)
