Ruger 10/22 question

I recently purchased a Ruger 10/22 at Wal-Mart. The one that i looked at in the case had the stainless barrel, and the rest was silver. So i had the salesperson grab one from the back and she opened the box, and i looked it over and everything looked ok, i was just looking for scratches in the wood. Then i got the gun home and took a closer look and noticed that everything looked ok but, the trigger housing was black, not silver like the one that was in the display case. I was just wondering if Ruger makes a gun that has that combination, or if i was sold a gun that had the trigger housing changed out or what? Thanks for any help..... Jace

10/22 question

Sounds like a factory screw up. Call Ruger Customer Service ask them about the rifle(maybe they will exchange the housing for you. They have exchanged scope rings for me.) If not take it back to Wal-mart for exchange.:cuss:

Wal-Mart gets special runs of guns that Ruger does not list in their catalog, or offer to other dealers.

You could pop on over to the rimfirecentral forums for the details--someone there would probably own/have pics of all the Wal-Mart Ruger 10/22's up to now.

People often rip on Wal-Mart and say not to go there because of (various reasons) but the fact is--if you want to collect factory 10/22's, many of the special versions are available at Wal-Mart only.

From what I understood Wal-Mart is 'no returns or exchanges' on guns or ammo, like most chain stores.

mp510 is correct. Don't try to return a gun or ammo to Wal-Mart. The nice girl at the service desk will promptly call security to escort you to the door. Don't ask me how I know. :)

ty bringing it back to wal mart. You will hae the little old door lady chasing you around the store yeling "Sir! Sir! You can't bring guns in here sir!"

No..it never happened to me personally but I've witnessed it. Wal-Mart is a very strict no returns no exchange policy. Don't worry about the dirty looks mister manager escort is giving you, inspect the gun and do it very closly to make sure it is as it should be. I got five minutes worth of dirty look and a manager trying to stuff things back in the box as I was still checking them before leaving wal-mart with my marlin.

Be aware that it's only an aesthetic issue before deciding what to do- the only stainless component on the 'stainless' guns is the barrel; the receivers and trigger housings are all alu anyway.

What model number is on the Ruger box?? What is the barrel length?

Ruger has a variety of 10/22's finished in both blued barrels and stainless barrels. The receiver is aluminum and powdercoated in either black or silver depending on the barrel. The trigger group is supposed to match the finish on the receiver.

You can go to the Ruger website to see the varieties of the 10/22 and the pics of each:

Wally-World will not accept returns on their guns so don't bother trying (much less taking the rifle back into the store!). The best thing to do is to contact Ruger and see what they will do for you. They don't have toll free numbers or published e-mail addresses so call them in Newport NH at (603) 865-2442 and tell them what you have found. Chances are they will replace the entire trigger group based on the model number you purchased.

I just went into a local WalMart today (for another reason) and looked and they have one in the display case that is the same way--silver barrel and receiver but black triggerguard.

Had a buddy who use to make barrels for ________. They had two product
bins --one for the barrels that they considered top notch and one for
Wal-mart. The difference? The barrels in bin two just did't shoot as
straight.

I suppose a trigger housing won't make that much of a difference.....

So they build a gun..shoot it..and if it's not "accurate enough", they disassemble it and put the barrel in bin to be re-assembled again into another gun for wal-mart. Hmmm. How else do you know which barrel shoots straight? Smells like an "urban legend".......

I hate Walmart. I belive they have special barrels for the crap they sell. I would rather pay more and buy it from a real gun store.

I find Wal-Mart to be a pain at times too....but do you really think Ruger, Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, Savage, And all the other gun makers would want both the bad rep, and Warranty returns by intentionally selling KNOWN JUNK guns, not to mention the possibility of liability lawsuits by purposefully doing this??? Think about it.....

I didn't see it in their catalog. You've got an ultra rare factory mis-fitted rifle and should be proud!:p

Let's all beat that dead horse. Beat it!

Turns out that the combination of the black trigger housing and silver receiver and stainless barrel is how the new stainless 10//22's are shipped, whether to Wally World or any other shop.

Just to clarify the return/exchange policy for Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart will NOT exchange a gun (ever). It's up to the Store Manager on whether a gun can be returned. Every gun that is returned is sent to be repaired even if it has never been taken out of the box.

How do I know.. I am a management trainee at Wal-Mart (before you slam me hear me out.) I am a college student, I have been with Wal-Mart since I started college. Its a good resume builder, and I am guaranteed a job when I graduate college.

When I bought my Mossberg 835 at Wally World, the salesman was adamant that I have as much time as I wanted to inspect it, repeating several times, "Make sure it's exactly what you want, because we do not accept returns on firearms. Period."

ThinBlackLine: I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks your little anecdote is not only inaccurate but not very well thought-out. :)

Umm, its happened already with non-gun manufacturers. Walmart courts companies with big name recognition for quality, and asks them to make special cheap versions that will be available 'walmart only'. Very few companies have had the sense to get out. Many companies have jumped in, and crumbled under walmart's continuing demand for 5% cost reduction every year. Most companies create something cheaper to meet walmart's demand, then end up selling the cheaper version to everyone.

I see the new winchester boltaction and the new remington boltaction as guns made to meet walmart's demand for continually lowering prices, and now they will be sold to all firearms retailers.

Hell, wal-mart is so cheap, when they send company people out traveling, they are instructed to take pens from the hotels they stay at back to the office, for office supplies.

Oh no, that makes perfect sense. Every good supplier sends all their seconds to their biggest customer and saves all the really good stuff for the people who buy one a year and tell everyone about how many seconds and junk they sell. :)

*Shrugs*

The factory 10/22 triggers are so awful that the only thing to do is yank them out and drop in a new trigger group as soon as you get the thing home.

Volquartsen, Kid, and a metric gaggle of other people make aftermarket trigger groups that are far superior to the factory ones.

I don't find my 10-22's trigger that bad at all. I bought it used, maybe the trigger was changed already? I can shoot about anything, not real picky if it's half way decent, at least for a plinking gun, but the 10-22 is as good as any plinker I've ever fired.

Now, then, I need to go shopping at walmart today....:D
