Drinking and CCW

I don't drink and drive, though I won't be like a lot of folks and lie and say I have never, ever done it. Same with carrying, if I cannot drive, I do not carry, so I don't drink to the point to where I am at DUI levels. Anything less and up to that is fair game, though I don't do it often. At home, I just put the sidearm away in the other room...standing rule at my place, because we often get well beyond the legal limit here, on the rare occassion that we do drink anyway.

Biker,
You are my kinda people! Thanks for the colorful posts . . . and for keepin' us gun fanatics from takin' ourselves too seriously!

Reluctant as I am to post a serious reply to the poor slob who started this thread looking for a helpful comment, but...

My 2-cents is that regardless of what the law PERMITS in your state, if I ever had to defend myself with lethal force I would not want to have the trial which might result to be clouded with questions regarding my alcohol consumption.

One beer and you are fodder for a prosecutor who will find someone to back his claim that any alcohol affects your judgement at least a little.

When I carry (which is most of the time) I simply don't drink.

Conversely, I feel free to drink at home. I can't compete with Biker, as it's rare for me to have a second beer. But, if I have to defend my home from an invader with lethal force I think the case will be far less complicated and the expectation that I am allowed to have a drink at home far less of a barrier.

Just my opinion,
ChickenHawk

I don't drink alcohol, but lemmetellya, after four or five of my patented home-brewed "skyrocket" lattes, you don't want me anywhere near anything that requires steady nerves...:)

I think I would rather carry when I have my one beer and run the risk of having to explain myself to a court that stand at the pearly gates with my family and explain myself to God.

Christmas can be a very stressful time for many people. How do ya think that Rudolf's nose got so red?
Biker:)

In Minnesota you can have a small amount of alcohol in your bloodstream.

Can't remember the amount, HOWEVER I TEACH YOU DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, AND YOU DON'T DRINK AND CARRY A GUN. That's my rule and I don't care what the state allows. You are not going to know when you've crossed that line so if you feel the necessisty to drink, don't carry your gun. It's not worth looseing your permit over.

Mongo said: When drinking, always sit with your back to the wall, get your first beer in a bottle, and KEEP THE BOTTLE... You will feel more comfortable...

That is how I always do it.

You can not be ready to help yourself or others

if you use alcohol. The use of alcohol leads to non-spritual behaviors and attitudes. The dysfunctions in our unhealthy society are so prevalent, that we often fail to see the injuries caused by alcohol. People mowed down by drunken drivers, abused single mothers and children, suicides, incest.... I fail to find anything funny about drinking.

Why not go to some 12 step meetings, and listen to the destruction caused by the disease?

Denial is not a river in Egypt.:uhoh:

Louisiana Law:
Any portion of the permitted area of an
establishment that has been granted a Class A-General retail
permit, as defined in Part II of Chapter 1 or Part II of
Chapter 2 of Title 26 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of
1950, to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on the
premises. Additionally, the blood alcohol reading of the permittee
must not exceed .05% or greater by weight of alcohol in the
blood.

Note, Louisiana law says nothing about having a beer at a tailgate party while packing. It only gives a blood alcohol level, and forbids you from entering an establishment where liquor can be consumed.

Here is my rule. I do not drink alcohol, because I carry a gun 24/7. Because I can not carry in places that can serve alcohol, I do not patronize those places. Period.

I don't drink a lot - and if I have not eaten in a while, one beer can make me feel it.

Thus, I don't drink while CCW. In the few instance when I go out with the guys for the purpose of consumption, I personally elect to not CCW. On those nights I'd be too drunk to shoot anything anyway - so I would just die if attacked. At least I wouldn't feel it.

You'd feel it when you woke up the next morning.

Wait.....

If I have a beer with dinner at a sit-down resturaunt with my family, and no plans to drink more, I don't see why my rights to self-defense should go out the window. Someone carrying illegaly can get as drunk as they want. It's like any other argument for CCW, "you don't need a permit to break the law".
I'm in total agreement. But here in Michigan, you leave the guns at home. Depending on where I'm going to eat, I'll leave em. This is most notably where they serve Michelob Light on tap. But I still think it's crap that drinking a beer with dinner will not get you in trouble for driving, but you must leave your instruments of self-preservation locked up at home.

Geez, Biker.:D

>Rest assured dmallind, I'm cut to the bone. For you to insinuate that I would drink anything less than Milwaukee's Best Light is a clear case of character assasination and defamation<

Sheesh bro... all this time, i didn't think you had character TO assassinate! :neener:

BTW: if you get a chance, try New Glarus Spotted Cow...

As for the original topic: I generally don't have more than a beer on any given day: don't really like getting drunk, and have spent LOADS of time as the designated driver. Would I carry at such times? You bet... one beer ain't intoxicated. YMMV

Well, life in the inner city can be lively and challenging. That said, if I want to sit in the sun in my tiny backyard and have a beer, I will. If I want to sit on the front porch, or the neighbor's porch, after work and have a beer, I will.

I might have two. Point of fact, at my weight I can drink 4 beers in 2 hours and be legal to drive, so a beer every hour or two isn't a problem.

Now, about the comment "The use of alcohol leads to non-spritual behaviors and attitudes."
If that is so, then why is it they use wine for communion?

My CCW class in North Carolina told me that it was a zero tolerance thing...i.e. you can NOT drink at all and have a weapon on you.
