Hmm... I dunno much about NC laws, but I suspect he wouldnt have been disqualified from buying legally (no prior history? long term resident?) nor would that have precluded him from buying illegaly, like most of the criminaly intent would do.

Its no secret that vehicles can kill alot of people, one reason that buying/renting a car has many federal restrictions, background checks, and state limitations.
Without extensive Car-control it would be dangerous to let any tom, dick and harry just get a drivers license and tear down the road to do God-knows-what on the highways we drive!

14‑269.2. Weapons on campus or other educational property.

(b) It shall be a Class I felony for any person to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, any gun, rifle, pistol, or other firearm of any kind on educational property or to a curricular or extracurricular activity sponsored by a school. Unless the conduct is covered under some other provision of law providing greater punishment, any person who willfully discharges a firearm of any kind on educational property is guilty of a Class F felony. However, this subsection does not apply to a BB gun, stun gun, air rifle, or air pistol.
