Quite a disturbing article.

And in other news the police are becoming a paramilitary force. The death of the Dr in VA. and routinely serving warrants with swat should make people take notice.

Sounds a lot more dangerous than water is wet.....

For the police to be effective they need to be part of the community. When they see themselves as an occupying force, the public views them that way too. Drug enforcement and the money that it creates does more harm than the drugs could possibly do.

Both of the linked articles are worth reading.

When this topic (militarization of police) has been discussed in the past, I've noticed a slightly bipolar response from those who claim to represent LE:

1. You guys are just biased, tinfoil-hatters, to be even be discussing such an inflammatory topic (no militarization exists);

2. This equipment/training is needed to combat today's more lethal criminals (if it saves just one life); or,

3. History shows that police have always been intertwined with the military (nothing to see here, move along).

Still, images like the sheriffs APC that swampsniper posted are most powerful at conveying the undeniable message. I'ms sure someone can find another photo of one with a .50BMG mounted.

Here's a link and photos of the proposed LEAP (Law Enforcement Advanced Protection) uniform; which itself is derived from the Army's FFW (Future Force Warrior) combat ensemble.

Maybe the robo-cop of the future will be more acceptable if he resembles Jeff Gordon?:neener:

"swampsniper, is that a Photoshop job, or is that for real"?
+++++++++++++++++++++
It's real. It came right out of the local online version of the newspaper.

Strange, the things ya recall . . .

It must've been 35-40 years ago that a Dick Tracy cartoon predicted this! Some character presented a sketch to Tracy of a proposed police uniform: helmet with face shield, visible body armor, gauntleted gloves, high-top boots and carrying a sawed-off pump shotgun (more effective than a .38 revolver, dontcha know) and state-of-the-art walkie-talkie.

Tracy dismissed the concept, as it didn't lend itself to interaction with the citizenry (my words, but that was the gist of it).

Today, I suppose the verdict would be different . . .
