In my Foxhole
nearly all #s match (big 5 99$ yugo 24/47 mauser), BUT:

bottom stock (matching #) is dark wood, patched 5 times
handguard is very light wood, brand new.

can somebody help me fix up this puppy? I really want to totally make-over this rifle.

rules: I can only spend up to $200, including shipping.
i don't have any specialized tools - so no drilling, tapping, dremel, etc. all i have are hand tools and a power drill.
i don't need this to be a tack driver. hitting roughly com at 100 yards is just perfect.
i have tons of time to work on it by hand.

I bought one over a year ago, same very dark stock and lighter handguard. You can simply refinish the stock and stain it to match.

Yeah. Just stain the thing.

Or put on a walnut sporter stock from Cabela's for $85.

Here are some interesting options...

Depends what you want from the thing.

For $200, you can get an ATI stock and a scope, and make a "Scout rifle."

Don't judge a book by its cover. I'll take an ugly rifle that shoots over a pretty rifle that patterns any day. I'm sure your yugo will be a shooter.The stock is patched up and mismatched because it was actually used for something, I even prefer the 24/47s that have some character over the unused m48s.:cool:

This one,though an M48 and all matching with original stock, started out looking like a rifle that sat in a drum of used motor oil for 50 years. It was hideous when I bought it.:D

Edit: uh yeah, that'smy kid's bed.

thanks guys

well, personally, I LOVE guns with character and history. I love telling the stories, the history, etc - and folks who are gun-wary or downright gun-hostile will often open up their minds and appreciate in their own way an old, well-restored military firearm. My mother, for instance, was very much impressed by my m91/30, especially after i told her the history of the 7x54 cartridge.

that said, i'm pretty dead set on making this mauser a "project mauser", one with exposed barrel (no handguard), scope, and modern stock.

some guns are for collecting. this particular one is for rebuilding.

again, my rules:

* $200 w/ shipping max
* no gun parts are to be replaced (ie, i don't want to replace the bolt with a turned-down bolt unless i absolutely have to).
* scope a must
* no permanent modifications to gun parts, including stock - the old stock is going to be put away into collecting storage.

I've looked at boyds and I'm impressed. I'm worried about filing, however, even with the inlet stocks - i tried my hand at filing with an sks scope mount for my yugo and i wound up hopping mad in frustration (in that one case, i'm glad i wasn't able to modify the gun in the end).

the ati looks very nice, but again, worried about filing.

eBay and other auction sites are your friend!

I'm doing up a VZ-24 along the same line, will have less than $200 in it, including the gun.

However, Having done one other (A Turk, also about $200 invested), the only really good way too scope one is to drill/tap and mount rings(and re-work the bolt to clear scope). every other solution I've seen leaves something to be desired. I did the Turk myself, with a drill press and a tap that I already had.
