Those of us who have been doing this for awhile and have gone on various flights of fancy, what is the one gun you always come back to. That one piece that just seems to do everything you need or will ever need it to. The old friend so to speak.

Now I know there will be lots of 1911 answers, but forgive me John Moses, it is the SIG Sauer P220 for me. The P220 has it all for me.

Reliablity without question.
Accuracy.
.45 Caliber (I am a .45 guy at heart)
Double Action(I am a TDA guy at heart)
Feel.
Fit and finish.
Did I mention reliability.

For me personally I just cannot imagine a finer do it all arm. It's got credibility, class etc. Yes it's no 1911 but in some regards that isn't a bad thing..........Our Lady Of Blessed Firepower Forgive and Watch Over Me. :D

When it comes right down to it I am a .45 or .357/.38 kind of guy. The rest are just diversions. Not that they are bad, just that for me those calibers seem to be able to fill every niche I would ever need them to.

While I love 1911's , and I never really go away from them I keep coming back to the Ruger GP-100. I have owned 4 . I keep getting tired of them and then selling them. Then after some time I just seem to gravitate back to them. In fact I just picked up the 4th this past Thurs. I cannot wait to hit the range with it this Sunday.

Pistol: Ruger P95, oddly enough, but usually there's some reason. The last time, I had to choose between it and my 1991A1, found out that the single action was a no-no with management, so sold it so I could afford a carry rig for the Ruger. If it weren't so danged reliable, I would have replaced it by now, but it always goes 'bang' and stays within minute-of-bad-guy.
Rifle: Marlin 336 in .30-30. My 'un'assault rifle. I suppose there're superior models for nearly any purpose, but my first centerfire was one of these, and it carries so well. Besides, it's a lot more 'socially acceptable' to keep it in my trunk as I travel out of state a lot.
I have others, and perhaps my new XD45acp will take the top spot, once I've gotten a case of ammo through it.
As mentioned above, there are technically better arms for many different uses, but I keep coming back to these two. Before I got the P95, my go-to sidearm was a Super Blackhawk with the 8.5" barrel. In the open carry state of New Mexico, I didn't worry about concealment at all, just wore it on the hip.
Either folks were more open minded ten years ago, or the funky cool 'cowboy' look went over well.

That is one of the hardest things to teach new folks whether it be guns or cars. Just because something is technically superior on paper doesn't necessarily make it better. Like many tools it is 90% operator, 10% tool.

Chris,

Funny you should ask. I just recently have come full circle on some of my handguns after many 'flights of fancy'.

For the pocket, and I have tried a bunch of mouse guns, I have returned to the American Derringer in .45 auto rim. In the '80s I carried one for eight years, then sold it for some stupid reason. Saw this one at a recent show and it was love all over again.

The Glock 19 for CCW. Was it really sixteen years ago I bought my first 19? Wow. I've carried all sorts of others (see above) but I have come back to the wonder nine.

And lastly, a Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 in .45 Colt. Oh what a field gun! 255 grains at about 900 feet will do what I want in the woods and on the trail. I got this one a little while ago and just lucked out. Shot it today and she'll cut clovers at 25 yards if I'm careful.

My best shootin'buddy says I've gone back in time 25 years, he's right and I think it's a good thing.

+1

...on the G19. Figure with the price of Mak ammo that will be my carry piece this summer.

Or maybe my 686+ with Aquila .357. All depends how Huurricane season shapes up.....might even be my AK

Nineteen Eleven...... (Even though SIG is in my name)
Love my Sigs, but if it came down to one choice, it's JMB's little thang...

Funny you should say that as I have said many times, the question keeps being asked, yet it was answered so many years ago.

For example....what is th best pocket gun gets asked all the time and to me the J frame sized revo. answered that question many, many moons ago and I am not an old curmudgen. I am only 32..........God am I really that old.

...there will be lots of 1911 answers...

Yep. For me, the full-sized Government Model 1911-A1 is my old standby. I use different things for different purposes (as mentioned above), but the do-all is my Kimber Custom II, 5" - simple and direct.

For rifles, my AR-15 would be the first long gun I grabbed for any unknown situation. I have some tricked out guns, but this is the one I shoot best, and it's accurate to a fault - amazing that such a short, light gun does so well at over 400 yards.

Dan Wesson Patriot C-BOB, 10mm. A fabulous gun that has never failed, takes almost everything I can feed it, is dead accurate, and although a bit weighty, it carries quite well in my Milt Sparks Versa-Max. Top it off with my Rohrbaugh R-9 BUG and I carry with confidence that I can handle 95%+ of what may come my way.

Reliability and confidence are the keys for me. I shoot both guns very, very well and I just feel good with them on me!

I keep wanting to spend more time with the S&W M66 as it is a challenge, but find the 6" 686+ in my hand most of the time. The PC627VC tends to languish--almost boring in it's competence, but heavy.

i know this is going to sound ridiculous, but if i had to give up my world class super accurate marlin mod 60 with the Barska 6.24.42 scope, i would never forgive myself.

My Beretta 92FS. It was my first pistol, so I've owned it for nine years. I put about 4,000 rounds through it the first four years, then another 2,500 over the next five. I know that's not much compared to some pistol shooters, but for me it's a lot.

As a result, nothing feels quite as good as my Beretta. I've owned just about every other make of autoloader and I'm a fan of Glocks and S&W 3rd-gens, but the 92FS will always have a special place in my heart... or should I say holster?

Glock 19.

It's big enough to have the capacity I desire, small enough to conceal should I need to. Not to mention it has the best ergonomics of any pistol I've carried to date... I know... ergonomic + Glock.

It's chambered in 9x19 which you can get just about everywhere, the recoil is manageable all darned day long, and it just won't stop ticking...

Gotta love it.

For me it is S&W Nframe revolvers.Especially the ones chambered in 41 magnum.Favorite long arms are Marlin 45/70 and Ruger #1 rifles.

Amen Devonai

I too love my Beretta 92FS. My first pistol. My almost constant companion. I have over 7,500 rounds with never a FTFeed, FTFire, FTEject. I am not a world class shooter, but it can put rounds where I want them out to 40 yards. Plenty good for me. I bought it in 1994.

What else, the M1911.

I've got four of them, three .45s and a .38 Special. Right now, I mostly shoot my Norinco, which will be getting combat sights in the near future.

I don't reside in a high crime area full of Zombies, druggies, and black helicoptors....so personal defense isn't a major concern.

For me it's a nostalgia thing....boyhood memories of squirrel hunting with a .22 rifle. An autumn day, crunchy leaves, and a Winchester 52B Sporter. (...some kids never grow up...)

another 1911 guy

I keep coming up with new handguns - Glocks, Springfield XDs, revolvers - but the "one" gun for me is the 1911. I have several, but the full size stainless I had built in the late 80s is my baby.

It is perfect - the guys at the Gunsite Gunsmithy had it for an evening when I was there in 91 and proclaimed it "the perfect .45". ;)

This was the pistol I used in the 80s/early 90s for competition, when I had a 1000 round per week training schedule. Whenever I pick it up, it instantly becomes a part of me.

Glock 21

Glock 21. First handgun I ever fired. Still the simplest to operate, take apart, and clean. I've heard some call it ugly but to me it has very clean lines and a utilitarian look. Operation is simple. Load, pull trigger. No switches, knobs, decockers or hammers to confuse things when the going gets rough. I've mashed a bit of white crayon into the stamped numbers and logos, other than that it's stock. My wife likes it too, and she's a better shot with it than I am.

Old friend...

...When all else is said and done, I never go to the range, and hardly ever go afield, without my faithful Ruger MKII Stainless, with 10" bull barrel, Hogue grips, and Williams hooded fiberoptic bead front & peep rear sights. I'm a Journeyman Toolmaker and have made a self-storing, telescoping legged and removable bipod for it. Next will be a Magna Port job... Woodchucks at 130+ yards, OH BOY! :D
