I need bases for my table lamps...

The two 57mm (outta some sorta big ol' Russian gun) cases just don't look right sitting directly on furniture. Does anyone here do any wood/lathe hobby stuff? I'd love to get a pair of turned walnut or oak bases... I can send you the dimension of the case head, and the general sorta profile I'd like. I live in an apartment, so I'm figuring that a lathe would be a bit much...

FWIW, I filled the business end of the things with 2" "furniture cutout" fillers from the "office stuff" section of Home Depot - they're almost perfectly sized, with maybe 3 layers of tape around 'em (which doesn't show). Filled 'em with hot glue, then drilled and screwed in the lamp stuff.

One has been completely assembled (except for the base) and I still have to take a "before" picture before I clean #2. It looks very "gun" - kind like a monster .308 shell sittin' on top of one of the Bunker's bookshelves...

Also, was talking with Arne, and he's been making grenade lamps... I'm going to get one.
 
I have a source for black marble round trophy bases. I'm sure there is a size that will be right. They come from Kansas City, so check with a local trophy shop if you are interested, it would be kind of silly for me to have them shipped here and then ship them back to St. Louis. PM me if you need the name of the supplier.

I haven't seen walnut round trophy bases for quite a while, but your local shop may be able to help.

Haven't seen the wooden bases in awhile either-however...

Classmate went to the arts and crafts store and bought pre-cut wood discs/circles ( they vary in dia). She then bought the 'roll' of flat wood like I guess used for weaving. Using tacks she made nice big coasters for potted plants. Finish with stain,or paint.

Hey, thanks for the idea - I'll give the guy who does the trophies for local shooters a call.

These lamps are gonna look way kewl... Not tactical tho - I'm not gonna put a carbon fiber base on 'em.
 
Actually, the speakers I am planning on building will be MDF for the boxes, and I'm probably gonna paint them OD-green, with a stencil on the sides - I'm thinking...

Maybe with some "cartridge-box" style rope handles on the sides...

I thought about trying to find camoflage lampshades for the shells, but decided that white would provide more light, so... Worse comes to worse, if I get a wild hair, I can mod the lampshades - Unca taught me how to paint, afterall...

Lamp restore business was next to the cleaner's in my area. Interior decorators would bring fabric and have the shades made.

I have seen ( on the back dock) spray paint used to "get that certain look" . Using stencils they did retro designs.

Had a Fed prosecutor customer that rebuilt old time oil lamps. Many had been converted to electricity. He did a lot of research, and, I believe Shady Lady[tm] is a franchise that various parts used in lamp making. I'm sure there are others.

I've got some white oak boards I've been planning on doing something with, what do you want the bases to look like? Do you just need a disk with a fancy edge and maybe feet?
 
I basically just wanted a disk an inch or so high (but shorter wold work) with a rounded outer edge that I'd drill through to run the cord, and put felt (already have it) on the bottom. I don't remember what the head size is at this point, but I can tell you tomorrow.
 
Bogie, when you get this all figured out, could you send me a PM with the details. I have a pair of 40 mm cases that I fired out of an M42 Duster somewhere around 25 years ago. I have carried them around through each of the many moves since then with the idea of someday making a lamp out of them.

The cases I believe are brass, but they are painted with a brown laquer sorta like the surplus ammo we buy today. The primer is almost exactly the size and shape of a .410 shotshell. I don't know if it would be better to remove the laquer and polish them, or leave them as they were issued. I guess if I knew for a fact that they were brass that would make the decision easier.
 
I'd clean a small portion of the case head, and see what that looks like... I think I'm gonna probably eventually apply some clear sealant, but I like the look of the _sorta_ polished brass. The one I've cleaned still has some imperfections, but I look at that as being history rather than grunge...

On these, it looks like the primer was screwed in (I guess to make sure that jolts didn't make 'em go kerplowie when they didn't want 'em to). I drilled _next_ to that area, since the primer/primer surround looks like steel. My cord will be off-center, but hey, I can work that. I may be able to put up a photo early next week.
 
Bogie, the marble bases I told you about last night are 3" to 5" tall. May not have been what you had in mind, but I think they would make a great lamp base. They also have a countersunk hole through the middle to bolt a cup on with. They come in 8 sizes.
