Anschutz...

Best squirrel gun: Barrett! Shoot a round at the base of the big tree and you have 15 minutes to collect all the fallen squirrels knocked cold from the concussion...hehe!

Based on personal experience on what I have owned or shot:

Pistols: Sig Sauer for overall quality and performance. I really like my "series none" Kimbers for target shooting.

Rifles: Remington 700 in bolt action and Rock River in the AR platform. Ruger 10/22 or 77/22 for plinking.

Shotguns: Pump-Mossberg 590, O/U-Browning Citori

Ruger

You can't beat Ruger when it comes to good looking and powerful little guns. There is a reason that some of the higher power ammo says "for Ruger only". You just can't beat them for toughness.

Anything designed by J.M. Browning is going to be a good gun, wether it was filed out of a truck axel by some afghani or custom made.

for just ruggedness, Ruger is pretty solid, most S&W are good (I've seen a few where the forcing cone got blown out but other than that they rock)

old colt stuff is rock solid so are the older sigs.

anything designed by mauser is pretty good too, but some copys with poor tolerances can be dangerous, I heard of one PPK copy that had an anoying habit of throwing the slide back past the owners head.

I wouldn't buy a gun strictly on the merits of its manufacturers reputation, hold it, feel the edges for burrs, feel the fit of the parts, check the trigger for smoothness, and look for any plastic or aluminum on it.

I have lots of guns that I like but out of the box I say:

Savage for accurate rifles.

Sig for Handguns.

Remington for shotguns.

A small company Arms Tech for M-4's

Ruger for their ability to fire any ammo all of the time. Any new "warm" handload goes in one of the rugers first.

Worldwide, mt choice hands down is Beretta.

Nationally, Springfield Armory. While Glock, Sig, etc are cool, they don't have a varied enough product list. You gotta have atleast pistols and rifles for me to say you're all that good.

SIG and Kimber get my vote
For a wheel gun = Smith
For a Shotgun = Browning

Well, Fabbri? Purdey? Woodward o/u? These are beyond firearms as the term is usually understood. Their working lifetimes are unkown- many centuries. I have a sidelock 12 bore labeled Henry Monk (Chester), clearly made by Webley in about 1890, a third quality ejector gun, that I still hunt with every season. It works perfectly, and is in no way obsolete today, 116 years later. My grandson will use it unless they confiscate them all.
God Bless

You know, I wonder how spoiled we really are. When I was a kid (way back when) a true 1" rifle was pretty much unheard of. Now we take it for granted. I pretty much thought the guys claiming all this accuracy were blowing BS.

I've got a target on the 'fridge right now. Two consecutive 1" groups...at 268 lasered yards with my Bushie Varminter with handloads.

In my safe I've got S&W, Colt, Ruger, SA, TC, Remington, Savage, Winchester, Browning, Weatherby, Marlin, Rossi, Uberti. Can't think of one that isn't more accurate than I am and they're totally reliable. Even my RWS air rifle is exceptionally accurate.

I've got Ruger, Springfield Armory, Smith & Wesson, Browning and Winchester. All have been uterly reliable and problem free. Oh, my two Walthers have been excellent too, but I'm getting more and more prone to stick with American brands these days (and yes, I know my Browning was MADE in Japan, and my SA was partially made in Brazil, but they are American companies).
