Alright, I've got my first paycheck from my summer job coming up, and I'm itchin' for a new rifle.

I'm thinking of a hi-point carbine (9mm) or a saiga(.223), but I wonder if there's anything i'm missing.

Three hundred is about the max I'll spend and I might spend a little more if I lean towards a 7.62x39 AK variant because I'd sell my SKS in that instance.

I don't need highcaps or MOA accuraccy or amazing sights. (i do like the feel and sighst of the AK though)

Any suggestions, sorry if this is a copy of a previous thread, I did a brief search and didn't come up with anything too simmilar.

I have a trip to russia to save for and it's gonna cost me 2 grand. 300 is the max I'll spend regardless of how many paychecks I get.

Also, I would buy the new ATI stock for my hi-point if i got one, does anyone have any experiences with this stock?

If you are dead set on a semi-auto, I think the kel-tec or saiga is the way to go (mabey a 10/22).

If you don't mind manual actions....

Mil-surps:
Mosin-nagants can be had from $80-$150. Big round, big kick, big fireball.
Enfields, $100-$200. Fast action, 10 round detachable mag.
Mauser $200-$400. rock solid bolt-action
:edit: K-31 swiss, can be found for as low as $89. Straigh-pull action.

Lever guns:
You should be able to find some used Marlin or Winchesters or cheaper clones for under $300. You can get them in both rifle and pistol calibers, and they are a blast to shoot.

Those are just some options to broaden your cheap-gun range, I'm sure others will post some more.

Have fun.:D

Oh, i can't believe I forgot to say that I already own

An enfield No.4Mk1,
A mosin nagant 91/30
A 10/22
A SKS Yugo 59/66

I'm kind of a bargain hunter when it comes to guns. I'd rather not get another mil-surp bolt-action, esspecially one with expensive ammo (K-31)

Well the Kel-tec SU-16 is a nice economical .223 cal rifle that takes AR mags. Plus it folds up to make a nice truck/backpack gun. I think they are a little cheaper than a saiga and the newer models come with rail mounts for optics.

i would go with the saiga 223 really nice gun, and it could be converted to hi cap/pg anytime

how do i upload an image ??? it wont let me attach one

one that me and a friend converted

Marlin 1894 in .357 Mag.
Winchester 94 in .30-30
(non rifle) Remington 870 Express 12GA - VERY cheap ammo/fun!
Mosin Nagant 44 or 39.

Please don't laugh, but for the money you'd spend, an SKS is a good value & a fun gun. I own 1 & although it's far from my nicest or favorite gun, I like it. I've also seen lots of favorable posts about the K98.

You can get a nice 22 for $300 and be able to shoot it alot more often than a centerfire.

If you want a non-milsurp centerfire <$300, the Stevens 200 rifles look pretty good. Basically a non-accutrigger Savage for a heck of a good price. Of course you'd have to factor in the price of a scope too...

oooo the SU-16 has me intrigued. I don't care for the fold-up feature (although I may use it as I've run out of room in my locker) but AR mags seem nice, and I've always kinda liked the rifle.

I thought they went for much more than 300 though, how much do they go for nowdays?

I've got two .22's I mentioned only one because I figured everyone would reccomend the 10/22 unless they knew I had one. I also have a Marlin 925 for all my .22 accuraccy needs. I also own a mossberg persuader 12 ga (didn't mention because of me wanting a rifle)

Hey oldskool, the saiga looks nice, how hard was the conversion and how much did it set you back?

Thank you all for being so helpful

Don't be afraid of the Hi-Point Carbine. I spent something pretty close to $200.00 for the carbine, and extra mag and a BSA red dot sight. As long as I stick to the "popular" brands of ammo, it does not have any problems.
If you don't like the stock, ATI has a replacement stock available for it.

The carbine is a hoot to shoot and the 9mm is pretty cheap for centerfire cartridges.

Get a turkish mauser and try the Rhineland arms .45acp convertion for it. 70+160. I do kind of want to try that at some point.

My fun rifle is an SKS right now, my fun pistol should be a Baretta Neos but I've not gotten to try it with better ammo. My really fun revolver is a Webley Mk VI cut for .45acp. It's marvelous and more comfortable to shoot that a 1911.

I like my bolt guns, the best is the Swiss K31 but all of them are hard recoiling rifles so until I'm accustomed to them or find better recoil dampening they won't be as much fun.
