Not being able to find a recipe that matched what I had in my inventory,(or for that matter anything with 000 buck, the books stop at 00 buck), I took my standard 1 1/8 oz. dove load and replaced the load with 000 Buck.

12 gauge remington 2 3/4" sts hull
1 winchester W209 primer
17.7 grains red dot
1 WAA12 wad
6 000 buck pellets

I tried several wad pressures to get a decent crimp.
30 pounds
50 pounds
70 pounds
90 pounds
100 pounds
The crimps were very shallow up to 70 lbs, and after that, they actually looked like they should.

None of the shells ended up being actually round, they all showed some deformation. You cannot get 000 buck pellets to sit side by side in a 12 gauge wad. the pellets were loaded in a spiral pattern within the wad.

They all fed and shot well. at 15 yards, they all delivered the payload within a 5 inch group, no wad pressure was any better than another. All pellets completely exited a yellow pine 1x6. I did not have a chronograph with me to get measurements.

The firearm was a Rem 870 express 28" barrel with an IC choke. Cleaning the barrel showed no unusual patterns in the crud, so I figured the wad held up through the barrel. My main concern was that the weight of the load, combined with the accelleration would distort the wad to the point it would allow lead to drag against the barrel on the way out. This does not appear to have happend.

Does this load sound excessive? Should I continue working this load, or should I go back to the books, break down and start over?

Six 000's should weigh about 420gr. (under an ounce) so it would seem to me that your load is probably fine, pressure wise.

You might even be able to hot it up a bit but I don't think I would without actually clocking them. Some filler might help the shell stay round and cushion the balls to help them stay round.

I have loaded some really oddball shells without published load data and think you are on the right track. Just be cautious in your development and all will turn out well.

I loaded a bunch of 000 buck in 1 1/8 oz. wads. I also used 6 pellets but filled the rest of the weight with #4 birdshot. It's what they used to call a "buck & ball" load. It shoots well and the #4 shot helps keep the hull round. You might try using just 5 000's and fill the rest with #4's.

Buffer or pellets will boost charge weight,so definitely reweigh and reevaluate the load.
I've done OOO with some of my trap loads also. Pellet size varies quite a bit from the established .36",which is another good reason to always weigh charges. Hornady OOO loads ok in a 6 pellet stack in most of my loads. As soon as I get around to it,I'm going to experiment with some shorter wads and slower powders. I tried getting blue dot to work using WAA12R short wads, but was unable to get proper ignition with my primer and charge combos. I'm switching to Unique next to try and get a good load in the 1300+fps range. The hard part is finding a short wad that will allow larger charges of powder, yet will hold up to the massive forces of accelerating buckshot. OOO ripped the petals off of the short little WAA12R wads. Long wads like the Fig8 and WAA12 handle the buckshot well ballistically, but they are long enough to make fitting larger powder charges rather tough.

My suggestion would be to check out the Ballistic Products website. They have a slug and buckshot manual specifically that lists loads for #4 buck up to 000 buck. They also sell heavy cardboard wads and other items that may make your life easier to load these specialty items.

Another reccomendation for the BPI catalogue and website.

Another option is to use the load data for a nine pellet 00Buck load and simply use eight 000Buck pellets.
That's what the major ammo makers do.

Try calling IMR/Hodgdon.
IMR has most of their pamphlet dedicated to shotshell loading and should be able to help. Hodgdon recently took over IMR and claims they are offering data for IMR powders now.
