i read alot about gas checks....but am not really sure what they are and where / when they should be used...can some one please explain it to me in layman terms....

i reload cast lead 200gr RNFT for my 45LCF......should i be doing gas checks?...how?

Gas checks are shallow copper cups that are pressed onto the base of cast bullets during swaging. The mould should be shaped to allow a shallow groove around the base of the bullet (I think; I might be wrong on that).

Anyhow, the purpose is to allow a higher velocity without leading the bore. For instance, the Lyman 169-grain gas-checked .311 bullet can be driven to around 2,000 ft/sec from an '06.

Hope this helps,

During sizing, the gas check crimps to the base of cast lead bullets to seal gases and protect the base from deformation.

No.
#1 You don't need them for most .45 olt loads
#2 You can't. They won't fit.

Gas checks can only be used on bullets that are specially designed for them.

And they should always be used on such bullets.

I think you were better off with the "hydrostatic shock" rant, BB...

I wish people would quit saying Series 70 when what they really mean is Pre-Series 80!

What's this if it ain't a Series 70 Colt?

Most Hand gun bullets (cast ) don't require the use of a Gas check due to the lower verlosities used . If a Gas check is required the Manufacturer of the Mould will have a note stating GC in the description as the Base of the Bullet is ressesed (a small lip to accept the Gas check ) I do have a RCBS mould for a 240gn SWC that is designed for Gas checks .I've never used them on it as I only load up to about 1000fps.
You place the Gascheck onto the base of your Bullet before sizeing it & as it goes through the sizer it is crimped into place on the base of the Bullet & basicly protects the Base of the Bullet from heat & being deformed & stops leading to a degree ! This enables you to load heavier loads & take you vel up around the 2000 fps mark !
