Other than being nasty greasy little things... There have been some cases of ground squirrels in some places out west being found with bubonic plague...not sure if they've been found with hanta virus or if that's just a mouse thing.

Another comment, if I might. Went camping with a friend in a true "wilderness area" in Canada (for a 3 week stay), and we didn't take NEARLY that much stuff. Still, the canoe we had was PACKED, and only had about 2 inches of freeboard. Try a stay at a more "civilized" campground, and you'll quickly find out what the "bare essentials" really are. Most people take WAY more stuff than is really essential. And if you have to pack that stuff in, or even canoe it, youll quickly find that you can (and want to) do with alot less.

Don't forget food, the freeze dried stuff is pretty good in the woods. Make your own first aid kit- you can do it better and cheaper then buying- keep it in a ziplock freezer bag. Candle lanterns are also a nice light light source for in-tent reading.

The more stuff you lug, the more you want to dump it all and go home. :) Have fun!

As several have already said, "too dam much stuff."
Based on your original post you plan on packing in and you would atleast need a mule.

You have most of the bases covered, or buried, depends on how you look at it. I would suggest that you consider each item, what its for and what you would do in a worst case senario with out it--and cull stuff based on your considerations. YOu need to wind up with a pack that weighs no more than 50-60 pounds and thats a load. But some things should be a must such as compas and topo maps.

Example, matches, lighters and etc-naw. couple of lighters and a steel. IF you can;t make fire with a flint steel you probaly don;t need to be out there alone. Chair, naw, make one out of rocks or limbs at each camp site, depending on the area. Tent-naw, small tarp and use sticks and limbs to make a cover. on and on.

But if you are gonna be in bear country, you need to have a can of bear spray handy at all times, its not much use in the pack. It is known that a 454 might not stop a charging grizzle but the spray will. Store food, sweet smelling stuff and garbage down wind of the camp site.

Good luck man, have a ball.

Didn't see when you were leaving, but if you have enough time, stay at a local campground that has a primitive area. You can get an idea of what works and what doesn't without being 100 miles from anywhere

I'd second BABY WIPES!!! They're your shower in a box. I didn't look at your list all that close, but take a very small bar of soap if it wasn't listed. Plenty of socks. Also, some type of towel or very small rug to put in front of the tent so you don't drag in too much mud/dirt.

Wow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what a list !

Ok may I make a couple of sugestions? Now my entire working life has been spent sleeping out door's in all weather & climates round Australia ! I use a swag (Bed roll with a materess ) made out of 16oz canvas, I dont use a tent as the swag keeps me dry in even the heaviest rainfalls or I just make a leanto with a tarp . I have a Dutch oven ,fry pan ,& what we call a Billy over here (a quat pot ) Water I have to carry with me . I go out for sometimes months on end !

Now in your case .Are you driving or Packing your gear in ? weight is a consideration ! As your only going for a couple of days ,forget the Shower ! a wet flannel & a Bed bath with remove any sweat from your arm pits Feet & groin ! A first aid kit is a must ,Bug repelent ,Fire starters ,bic lighter ,shovel (folding model if your packing in ,Take a decent size if your driveing in ) a change of socks for every day your going to be out & at least one change of socks ! A seat is most important !
Survival gear ! Sat Phone (their worth their weight in gold ) get a couple of Bright Orange Garbage bags ! You know the big ones they sell for garden waste or storage ! They can be used for a signal marker by laying them on the ground and putting a rock on each cnr . cut a slot on both sides & a slot in the bottom & you have a emergencey Poncho that holds body heat in ,Tie one round a branch with lots of folige inside & you have a solar still .Throw one or two on a fire & you have a cloud of Black smoke breifly. A compass is invaluble ,as is telling someone where you'll be & when your expected back.
What are you going to do to pass the time ? well I reckon that you'll be that busy taking in what's around you & unwinding & gazing at the stars at night you'll be flat out trying to read a Book. But take agood one incase
Just take the essensials this first trip & then you can say well next time I need to pack this or that

Dave
