New initiative in knives battle

POLICE have brought in a secret weapon in the bid to cage knife-carrying thugs.

Ferroguard, an airport-style metal detector, will be set up at undisclosed locations around Inverclyde.

Anyone caught in possession of an offensive weapon will be arrested — and held in custody. Additional handheld metal detectors will be carried in all police vehicles.

The initiative follows a ‘bin the blade’ amnesty that saw 150 offensive weapons taken off the streets of Inverclyde.

Ferroguard made its first appearance at the entrance to the Oak Mall shopping centre on Wednesday.

No arrests were made for possession of offensive weapons, but a drugs arrest was made.

Meanwhile, two teenagers appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday charged with possessing offensive weapons at Woodhall Train Station, where they are alleged to have been found carrying a sword and a baseball bat.

This story appeared in the Greenock Telegraph on Fri, 07 Jul, 2006

& some people still wonder why I moved back to the USA.....:banghead:

Two words:

Boker Ceramic

- Blade sintered from fine ceramic.
- Handles especially designed of fiberglass-reinforced Delrin.
- Dishwasher-safe, absolutely stainless, lightweight and antimagnetic.

;)

Someone should "turn in" a few thousand of those Zytel/glass Blackie-Collin's CIA "letter openers" into the amnesty bins just to freak them out.

Out looking for a "little of the old ultra-violence"? :p
When letter openers are outlawed only outlaws will have letter openers. Is it illegal to carry a baseball bat? What about a cricket bat? It boggles the mind.

It's illegal to carry an 'offensive weapon'. That is any item designed, adapted or intended to be used as a weapon, that is carried without good reason or lawful authority. If you want to do a medievel reinactment with a spiked mace, you can carry one for that, but if you carry one just because you feel like it, that' an offence. Equally, you can carry a newspaper just because you feel like it, but if you have the intention of attacking someone with it, it becomes an offensive weapon.

I'd agree with this law, because it catches criminals using anything as a weapon, not just named item, except that 'self defence' is not a good reason. However, as I have explained in previous posts, it actually is a good reason under English law, as laid out in the Bill of Rights and the Corronation Act, but it is not recognized as such because of Home Office advice..

The UK is well on the way back to the stone age. Funny thing is a piece of 1/2 inch thick window can be knapped to an almost monomolecular thickness finer than steel can be sharpened. Other than being somewhat brittle it passes through metal detectors just fine.

Quiet mrmeval!

Or they'll be banning windows next.

The Scots will be back to finely scraped sheepskin to keep out the wind and let in light.

Let me guess ... it's also an offensive weapon if used to deter a rapist or stop a midnight burglar from dragging your 13 year old daughter to a couch?

Hitler made short work of Europe and I never understood how so many countries could fall so quickly. Then the knife discussion started and it all made sense ...

They don't break that easy... I found one in a parking lot that was dropped and run over by a full size truck...

Must be the way they impact. I know a guy that dropped his ONCE. Broke the tip right off.

Fosbery, [tongue in cheek]
Over here in the "Colonies" we discovered a quaint bit of old british law that works quite well. We call it "assault and battery", the concept is that it is illegal to attack someone, even if there is no weapon present. This way we don't have to shake down every 12 year old's baseball team or arrest old ladies for carrying nail files.[\tongue in cheek]:neener:

With all these orwellian laws being passed, it is no suprise to me that the Scotish Indepenece movement has been growing in recent years.

I'd agree with this law...

Excellent! Say, you know--it would be doubleplusgood if you would accept the new position that recently opened up at the Ministry of Truth: we need someone to change a few errors that managed to sneak into those darned history books again--you'll never believe this, but the history books actually claim that English people were once allowed to carry weapons, and that there was low crime! Obviously, this must be false, since we all know that weapons are bad.

Yesterday I carried around a book just because I felt like it--does that mean I carried an "offensive weapon?" After all, since a mace is an offensive weapon when carried just because the carrier felt like carrying it, why not every object?

Who needs liberty, when we can have safety?

I love how you oh so selectively quoted me there :banghead:

Criminals, should not be allowed weapons. Law abiding citizens should be allowed weapons.

If someone is carrying a gun with the intention of using said gun on some innocent person, then he should go to jail, but we shouldn't have to wait for him to actually point the gun at the person before it becomes a crime. If the innocent person is carrying a gun, with the intention of defending his or her self, well that's great.

Fosbery, the problem is that good and bad people aren't allways as easy to recognizes as a group of hooligans with clubs vs. a cricket team. Since we can't read people's minds, that leaves us with two options:
1. Outlaw all weapons, impose strick laws, and hope we can give the State enough controll over us that they can prevent the BGs from harming us.
2. Assume people are innocent until they broken the law (and it has been proven). This means that we have to take other measures to reduce crime, but it is MUCH less oppressive to the innocent.

Until we get to the level of having "pre-cogs" look into the future to prevent crime, those are really our only options.

So... Let me see if I understand this.
If you have a sharpish kind of a doo-dad that you are carrying for a good reason that doesn't involve poking someone else. you are ok. But if that same doo-dad is being carried with the intent of defending yourself, maybe by waving it at some miscreant that is threatening you. that is an anti-social no-no.
How do the Thought Police know what you had in mind??

Glad I took up flintknapping years ago.

10,000 years later, we're back to obsidian blades!

skyder, don't forget blunt & pointy objects....

The "Offensive Weapon" nonsense in the Uk is quite literally "Out of control" I once got stopped by a cop while cycling so said cop could spend 15 minutes arguing with dispatch over his radio whether or not my "Bike Lock" was Classifiable as a "Offensive Weapon" (FYI it was a Steel Cable one with a padlock).

Another good example is how one Chief was arrested in Glasgow Central Train Station while in route to work, his crime? being in "Possession of Multiple Offensive Weapons" (His set of Expensive Cooking Knives that he had in a Custom Attaché case), he was sentenced to 6 months in prison, fined 1000 pounds per knife and his 5000 pound (value) knife set was Confinscated.

Insanity like that was a major part of why I figuratively broke my neck to move back to the USA & hope the friends I have there manage to follow suit.

U.K Folks - I really hate all this stuff for you folks.

My heart goes out to you , I mean that.

Civil Disobedience.

Are Dildos and Vibrators illegal?

These are not sharp and pointy.

If 'legal', and a bunch of Civil Disobedient types were to be scanned, and "blip", and one produced a ***** or vibrator upon being caught...well? :D

I wonder if in being attacked and a person produced one to attacker...if the attacker would - give real serious thoughts - and take off.

Oh I have some real tacky comments running thru my head...best not type them.

Umm...maybe a Campaign and hundreds, thousands of these showed up at Parliment...

"Say Gov, figured these were next, just saving some media time old chap...".

Maybe a THR care package sent on your behalf...I would chip in, just need the right kind of Media for our side is all.

:)

Steve

This is the type of thing that causes revolutions. Too bad everyone handed only their only tools to prevent tyranny over to their rulers. Welcome to phase 1 of slavery.
I guess I'm exaggerating though, I mean that wouldn't really happen would it? It's not like you can't walk down the street going to baseball pract...oh wait...

Fosberry are those two hands youare carrying at the ends of your arms???

Are you thinking about hitting somone with those??? I'm sure you are, because you sir have a scowl on your face. Scowling without permission or a scowling permit is a sure sign that you are about to commit an offense. There is no need to wait for you to do it.

You sir are under arrest for carrying two offensive weapons.

See how that works, thought crime, ala George Orwell.

Perhaps "I'd agree" was a little strong. What I meant was "it wouldn't be that aweful except that self defence isn't a 'good reason'".

If self-defence was a good reason, then the only people who could ever be convicted would be would-be-murderers etc (remember, the police must prove that you meant someone harm).

Now, suppose we can't prove who is a would-be-murderer and who isn't, well then no one gets caught by the law as you are innocent until proven guilty - it would be a pointless law, but no innocent people would be punished by it.

Unfortunately, as it is, self defence is not a 'good reason', so the law sucks.
