Hi guys,

First of all Hello from down under, this is my first post.

I've been thinking about a first rifle for a while now and have been told a .22 LR bolt-action is the way to go seeing as I'm only 16 and a beginner. I'm looking for an extremely accurate rifle.

So I thought I'd ask the experts on which model and make I should purchase. I have no clue about the price range either.

Any help would be great.

Thanks guys,

Dingers

UPDATE: Thanks a million guys! I've decided to go with the CZ 452 Varmint.

I've found one today and have reserved it.

Thanks again guys!

can't go wrong with a ruger 10/22. That should only run you about $250. Very accurate and hi cap mags available for cheap.

If I remember correctly, you aren't allowed semi-autos in Australia (correct me if I'm wrong.)

Th CZs mentioned are great guns, by all accounts. If you want a good gun for less money, try a Marlin 25N, mine is quite accurate. And if you want an accurate semi, at a reasonable price, go with a Marlin 60. Mines a tack driver, far more accurate than an out of the box .22.

Yeah dfaugh that's true.

The ruger looks great but we're not allowed semi's here.

Okay, I currently have two guns to look at, the Marlin and the CZ.

Thanks again guys.

Years ago my brother bought a single shot lever action from Sears. I don't recall the branding or model number, but I'd love to get my hands on one.

Remington and Kimber both offer some very nice bolt-action .22's, but they're kinda spendy for a rimfire (upwards of $500 USD)

The Marlin 39A is a really nice little levergun and will shoot .22 short, long or long rifle. They run about $400 USD.

Man those CZ's are just a great value. Hard to beat for a first rifle. Rarely will you find close to a consensus on something like this.

You really don't need a half dozen or dozen options. Savage and Marlin bolt guns are fine choices too. But don't worry, just get a CZ, and be happy.

My first rifle was a Marlin 75C which is a tube fed 22. I know it won't work for you due to your gun laws, but if the other Marlins are anything like mine you'll love it. I got mine for $60 at a gun show and it was a great rifle to learn on. Hope this helps a bit. Happy shooting.

PS: let us know what you end up with. I'm always curious what people start with so I know what to recommend to new shooters

The only thing that bothers me about the CZ is the magazine sticking out of the bottom of the rifle. And that is enough to keep a nit picker like me from having one. But from all reports, they shoot very well and seem to be a great value if you can abide a sporting rifle with a protruding magazine at the balance point.

Yep. CZ 452. Trigger is great, it's accurate, and it's well made.

If you spend a little more and get a CZ 453, you'll get the same rifle with an even better trigger: the single-set trigger group that CZ uses on its centerfire rifles. It's one sweet trigger.

Accuracy? I've got a target hanging on my wall that I shot with with my 453 at 50 yards. Five shots in 5/8". From a field position.

I think you will really enjoy that CZ! They have a huge legion of fans , myself included! I have the Special/Trainer , owned since 2002. It is one of the most accurate 22s I have ever owned.

BrainOnSigs - that is one very nice Varmint! I also like the rifle rest - a super combination! Thanks for posting the pic.

Savage is now offering it's bolt-action .22s with the AccuTrigger. The trigger is the key to accurate shooting, and the AccuTrigger is a quantum leap in that area.

You have made a very good decision. Now get about 10 different ammo types and test them to see which one shoots best in your rifle. Don't forget to include "Wolf Match Target .22" in your testing - cheap and good.
