I'm currently making a website that's a sort of a British version of Oleg's site, but focusing on SHTF situations (both fantasy, like zombies, and realistic, like floods). It will be very much a pro-gun and pro-armed-citizenry site and I'm doing a section on gun control. Basically its a list of all the arguments against gun control and a response to each one. I'm splitting it into three sections. One is a general section, another is for arguments relating to self defence (like "A gun would just be taken away and used against you") and the other is for arguments relating to an armed citizenry ("the people could never overthrow a tyrannical government") Here's an example from the list:

If it saves just one life...

It would save thousands of lives if we banned cars, or unhealthy foods or cigarettes but we do not. People should be free to own private proprty and to protect that which is dear to them. However, it would not save even one life to ban guns, but rather achieve the opposite. Criminals will have guns, as they alway will, and those that do not will still have other weapons. Law abiding citizens will be unarmed and the weak will be preyed upon by criminals. This is the situation we have in Britain today. If these people could defend themselves, hundreds of lives would be saved each year.

Anyway, I need some help with it. Firstly, in the 'arguments relating to an armed citizenry' I'm having trouble thinknig of common arguments for gun control. So far I have:

Only the police and army should have guns
In the 21st century there's no risk a tyrannical government
The peopel could never overthrow a dictatorship
Just with pistols?

I need a few more, can you think of any?

Secondly, I'm looking for figures of gun ownership, gun crime/deaths rate, violent crime rate and homicide rate in lots of countries, and also in US states.

Thirdly, I'm looking for the average time it takes for police to respond (get on the scene) to a 999 call in Britain.

I'm also looking for examples of real life SHTF situatuons where guns were useful or would have been useful if they had been allowed or whatever.

Can anyone help?

Well that depends. Tell them that you are being chased through your house by an enraged attacker with a knife and oh, maybe 30 minutes?

Tell them that you have a loaded gun and have shot the intruder, and you will probably get S019 and 50,000 squad cars within 10 minutes.

I accidentally trashed some of my recent PMs. Was that you who asked about images of UK-legal rifles and survival gear? If so, I'll have the first batch for you before end of the month.

Fosbery, if you will look at Gun Watch Blog you will get some real life stories of events involving guns here in the U.S. John Ray is an Australian and runs his blog from his homeland. I'm not sure how he keeps up with U.S. events but he always provides a source link. (Sometimes his server goes down but he has a mirror here.) He has daily posts on his blog about firearms related events. Could be a source for you.

I guess you might just as well go to the source for the anti-gun retoric : Do a search on gun control & Brady - they have plenty of what you need . Including some pretty creative fictional stuff. They rather depend on the old adage that if you tell a lie long enough, people may accept it as the truth.
