Does anybody know of a good gun store that buys second hand firearms?
My boss needs to get rid of a never used 5 yr old shotgun. Based on his description it is a cammo'ed pump either a Charles Daley or some flavor of Mossberg. He doesn't need the money, isn't buying nor interested in a trade, he just wants cash. He won't do a FTF sale only gun stores. I think he lives in the Camp Springs area.

If your boss lives in Camp Springs, then he is a Maryland resident. His best bet would be to try either Atlantic Guns which has two locations, one in Silver Spring and the other in Rockville, or The Gun Rack which is in Burtonsville.

I doubt he will find anyone closer that would be interested in buying outright or taking it on consignment.

I don't have experience with selling a gun, but I bought one from The Gun Rack and it was a very positive experience. I'd definitely do business with them again (selling or buying a gun).

He won't get much of a price, but if he just wants to get rid of the gun, he will probably have to take what they give him. A better bet would be a consignment sale, but I get the feeling he doesn't want to wait.

He could, of course, just surrender it to the police, but he will get nothing for it that way.

Is he afraid of selling ftf to a bad guy? What if somebody presented him with a recent 4473 that was stamped "Not Disapproved" from MSP?

Or is it that he just doesn't want to fool with trying to sell it himself?

That firearm is legal for FTF sales in MD....he would do much better financially selling it that way.

That being said....all of the stores already mentioned would be good choices, though I'm not sure whether they buy outright or do consignments. There's also Maryland Small Arms Range down near Upper Marlboro. I've only been there a couple of times and have never bought anything, but it is really close to Camp Springs.

The listed shops are all good places to deal.

Just let him know that he won't get much for it. As already mentioned a private sale is much better, kind of like taking a car to a dealer.

As I mentioned, there is the consignment sale, which puts the dealer into the picture for both legal and practical reasons, and also gets the seller more than the dealer himself would pay on a direct sale.

For those unfamiliar with the process, the seller works with the dealer to determine the amount the seller wants for the gun. The seller has to recognize that he cannot get "Blue Book" retail price for the gun, and also should understand that the dealer may know the local market better than the seller on uncommon items.

The dealer gives the seller a receipt stating that amount, then adds a markup and puts the gun out for sale. When the gun sells, the dealer pays the seller the agreed on price. If the dealer makes good money, fine. If he discounts the gun and doesn't make much, the seller still gets the agreed on amount.

The disadvantage is that the seller may have to wait a while if the gun is a slow seller. But the advantage is that the gun goes through the dealer's books, all the legal requirements are met, and the seller ends up with a reasonable amount of money without any concern about who bought the gun.
