Just saw the 2 hour show of Mythbusters that did move myths. Espically enjoyed the gun portions.

I thought the section about shooting locks and handguns needed more. 45ACP, 500S&W maybe?

SHooting a hole though the floor to escape i thought was pretty. I thought 2 Mags from Underwood, was a little too much.

They should combine shooting through the floor and shooting locks into one segment: if you can't shoot the lock directly, why not shoot the wood around it and just poke the lock out? :neener:

The Mythbusters arsenal is somewhat limited, esp. since they keep destroying their firearms in new and interesting ways :D The fact that they have to operate in and around SF is also a limiting factor. It ain't like this city where you can equip a platoon with a little shopping.

I was pretty impressed that they had access to an MP-5, though! I wonder if that's Jamie's personal Class III.

I've tried cutting down trees with various firearms and had similar problems. Shotguns with big slugs work the best by far.

I've found that 8mm mauser FMJ surpluss ammo will do a dandy job on trees. most rounds go through and through.

Anyone Know if there will be a re-run? I love that show and I had class when it was on tonite.

The show was awesome.. They used proper trigger control as far as I could tell, and did some interesting tests. I am submitting a request to do an all firearms 1 hours special. It would be cool to see them bust myths like .50cal taking down a airplane, and such :D

Yeah, I enjoyed the firearms portion too. The lock segment had similar results as the Box O' Truth; "Pistols are pistols and rifles are rifles."

Although every time someone said 'clip' I started yelling "magazine" at the screen repeatedly.

the lock part was bunk. ill bet the handguns will do better if they hit the lock from a downward angle. pop the locks off instead if trying to destroy the body.

i tuned in late so i missed the sword part. ill see that in a hour tho.

Yes, it would be more efficient to shoot downward. But that's not how it's done in the movies, which is what they're testing here. And I suspect that MP5 is a police department one. They've used MP5's on the show before IIRC, and I believe they stated that they used police department firearms.

I taped the movie myths marathon so my 8 year old daughter and I can watch it together.

I appreciated their point about flying schrapenal when shooting locks and doors and floors.

And, no, I don't think SF has anything to do with their firearms selection since as a company providing technical support to the entertainment industry they could have anything they wanted, even in SF.

1. On shooting locks, check out a similar article on http://www.theboxotruth.com/
The article points out that most handguns do not have the power to shoot off good locks. Shotguns on the other hand...

2. As another person pointed out, they are in the entertainment industry. Most, if not all of the firearms used on the show are rentals. Just like certain ranges in my area rent out full auto wepons, I'm sure there are some in the California that do so too.

The bulletproof glass test they did was interesting, too.

I'm sure the manufacturer wasn't too pleased that the Garand punched right through. :D

Ed. Weatherby

Ed. Weatherby Sr. used such a "test" in one of his first firearms avdvertisements. I can't recall where I saw it, but in short, the purpose was to demonstrate what velocity could do. In that advertisement, the 150 grain bullet at 3,600 FPS completely shattered the lock. And I do mean shattered. As I recall, it was shown both in slow-motion and full-speed. I can't believe I missed the Myth Busters show lastnight. I knew I should have entered it into my Palm Pilot!

Edit to add:

We should all, here at The High Road, ask Myth Busters to do an entire hour of firearms-only myths. Would that be cool or what?

I really liked the 'suck people out of depressurizing aircraft' tests they've done. That segment should be required watching for quite a lot of people. Bottom line: yes, you can create a hole large enough to suck a passenger through out of the aircraft, but you need explosives to do it. :neener:

I kind of wonder what the SFPD's reaction is when these guys phone/walk in. It must be something like 'What do they want to blow up this time? '

IMO of the better 'bigger bang' related segments was the 'use dynamite to remove concrete from mixer' segment. I wonder where they set off their truck bomb though. The 'Wooden cannon' segment also rocked.

Cheers,
ErikM

Doc, I was gonna comment about that same commercial.

I remember it from my youth. It started when Master Lock Company shot a commercial where they hit a lock with a handgun and it held. Then Weatherby shot thier commercial where they EVAPORATED a Master lock with a Weatherby mag round of some sort and the commentator said somthing like "Sorry Master."

I remember my pop laughing his butt off the first few times it aired.

Its probably not SFPD that gets worried when they walk in. After all they only contact them when its fire arm related.

Now the FBI on the other hand probably deficates a brick. Anyone who wants to vaporize a cement truck has got to raise some eyebrows.

There is another good firearm myth they busted (er... I meant proved, or is it plausible?) in an earlier episode that you should watch for on any re-runs... Diving into water to avoid getting shot, and boy did they test a heavy hitter on that one... .50 cal anyone? :D
