Seems kind of unfair to me, the dog was in a fenced yard, it was clearly marked
"beware of dog"...of course in the long run the crook is the one responsible...
One huge dog though, a Mastif is a scary opponent....

(CBS4 News) WEST PARK A police involved shooting in Broward County has led to the death of a dog.

Broward Sheriff's Office deputies who were looking for burglary suspects early Thursday morning shot and killed a homeowner's dog in West Park, BSO said.

The two deputies, both members of BSO's K-9 unit, were responding to a series of car burglaries when their canine partners picked up a scent which led them to a residential backyard in the area of Clifton Street just before 6:00 a.m.

When one of the deputies entered the fenced in yard, which did have a 'Beware of the Dog" sign, he encountered the 7-year old 170-pound Mastiff named 'Big Bo Blue". BSO officials say the deputy was forced to fire because he felt threatened by the big dog.

A second deputy in another yard, encountered another dog and fired his weapon as well but missed that animal.

Two burglary suspects were taken into custody. One of them has been identified as 20 year old Antonio Almeda. The second suspect is only 17 and has not been identified.

Why is this even an issue? Considering that JBT's often pull no-knocks on the wrong address and KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE, I fail to see this as being some sort of injustice. Or at the very least, anything out of the norm. Dogs, people, property...doesn't matter. I wonder if the owners will be reimbursed, or not because they created a hazard for officers in the line of duty.

The amazing part is TWO different deputies encountered 2 different dogs and each fired their weapons at them. WOW. That makes them look pretty bad if you ask me. The ironic part is that they were part of a K-9 unit, you'd think they have some experience in and around dogs?!?

This was my first thought, as well. K-9 officers SHOULD be able to tell a real threat, from a dog. (and we don't know whether that was the case of not). Unfortunately (having dealt with many K-9 officers in my years of training GSDs for Shutzhund Sport), some are much more "in tune" with dogs than others.

In any case, it's sad that someones pet had to die because the officers moved through the area where the dog was.

Broward county deputies are...special.

This is the same department that was taped laughing about one of them having shot a quietly walking protestor with a rubber bullet (serious welt and broke the skin, too) for no reason, from a distance, well on the other side of a line...just because they wanted to, apparently. They saw nothing wrong with this.

Very JBT department.

So if a homeowner walked out the back door with a pistol to see who was in his yard, I guess he would have been shot also?

I guess I am confused a little by this and other stories. They can shoot a dog for being threatening. The dog doesn't actually have to attack or get real close, but just be threatening? Maybe that is just the way the story is written.

Gee they could have knocked on the front door and asked the homeowner to restrain their dog, since it was the police who were tresspassing uninvited on the property, and the dog was restrained by a fence in his own yard.

Good thing they didnt accidentally miss and hit the homeowner or their children playing inside.

This Jack Booted Thug thing is getting a little old. It seems to be your standard response to almost any story or article about cops. Do you actually think that they take all of the brand new cops that just graduated from the academy and train them in the art of killing innocent people? That is just plain ignorance. I bet that you see black helicopters hovering around your house at night too. :fire:

Very JBT department.
That's often what results when a county elects a corrupt politician as Sheriff. Ken Jenne is a dirtbag of legendary proportions. I have a friend that started there earlier this year. I pray he doesn't take the low road like some many seem to do these days.

If the Jack Boot fits...

So I take it you see nothing wrong with a LEO knowingly entering a secured, fenced area marked "Beware of Dog", then shooting the dog the sign warned about because it scared him? And then his buddy doing the exact same thing in another yard? Is that ok with you?

Just as there are people who always blame the cops (the cop bashers) there are those who will support anything they do regardless of how offensive the conduct (the apologists).

The answer to your question appears to be the the poster feels it is indeed "ok". It does seem like awful poor judgment, but without proper contextual information it is very hard to make a call. I personally am very suspicious of K9 "hits". I read once that a substantial number of such hits were false. Since the handler cannot communicate directly with the dog, nor can the dog be cross examined later under oath, it is not much better than a guess.

So where was the arrest made? Were the suspects actually in the backyard, or was the backyard part of their escape route?

Is a warrant required in this case, or are police allowed to enter private property based solely off of the K9's nose? Was the K9 with the officers when they encountered the mastiff?

The police should be sued and pay for the dogs death.

But tough situation.

I honestly don't know which way I can go on this one. The only thing I can really be sure of is that I'm glad it wasn't in my yard and my dog.

On one hand, the cops have a job to do and chasing criminals through backyards is one of them. I would rather see a dead animal and a live cop taking a criminal to justice than a dead cop or an escaped criminal.

On the other hand, I can say that because it wasn't my dog or my property.

That is not the point of my comment but to answer your question, no I dont find fault for them going into the back yard, however, yes I do find fault for them shooting the dog. The point of my comment is that there are several people on this list who have a distinct dislike/distrust of pretty much all law enforcement and find it necessary to bash them at every opportunity. It actually makes me wonder what they are hiding.

Just as there are people who always blame the cops (the cop bashers) there are those who will support anything they do regardless of how offensive the conduct (the apologists).

I find myself to be in the middle of the two extremes you mention. I like to call that part of the spectrum "Understanding that cops are human just like everyone else and that they will make mistakes just like everyone else."

Could the cop in question have done anything else to avoid shooting the dog? Yep.

Should the department have to pay the family of the dog? Yep

Are there bad cops that fit the "Jack Booted Thug" description? Yep

Am I apologetic for all cops no matter what they do? Not even close.

Look, I know that there are good cops and that there are bad cops. Unfortunately there are a few people here that only see bad cops.

This is just unacceptable.

You are a homeowner, a dog owner, you have your dog vaccinated, all veterinary care up to date, bathed, happily lounging in your fenced back yard with a chew toy one morning when you go to work. You come home and find your canine companion of 7 years DEAD. Why, did he escape your yard, go on a rampage? No, some IDIOT with a badge disregards your "beware of dog" sign and goes into a yard where he KNOWS or reasonably SHOULD KNOW there will be a dog. The officer spots the dog, the dog spots a STRANGER invading his owner's yard and does WHAT DOGS HAVE BEEN BORN AND BRED TO DO FOR 14,000 YEARS! Look threatening to the intruder (this time, one with a badge). Did the officer respond by doing what anyone with one iota of common sense would do, i.e. LEAVE THE YARD? No, he F'n SHOOTS THE DOG. Ok, I wasn't there, maybe there was more to it than that. But this is still WRONG with a capital W. For a fee, you may be able to purchase a replacement dog. What about the cost of vaccinations and other routine veterinary care, what about training invested, WHAT ABOUT 7 YEARS OF COMPANIONSHIP? There is no way you can replace that for a fee. There needs to be a lawsuit with SUBSTANTIAL PUNITIVE DAMAGES levied against this police department so that IDIOTS like this will have to think twice before shooting an innocent animal legally kept on it's owner's property. I hope he gets fired and never works in LE again.

I know police have a job to do. I know sometimes extreme measures have to be taken. But it is just STUPID to go into a yard of someone not committing a crime and shoot that person's dog. There were other choices that could have been made. We hear so much about the vaunted "police training", that the rest of us without it aren't qualified to tie our F'n shoes, but a yahoo like this can be trusted to run around with a gun. Where was his "police training"? Either he didn't follow it, or the training itself is ridiculously flawed. YES IT'S BETTER THAT ONE SMALL-TIME PETTY CROOK GET AWAY than for one innocent person to have their dog killed in the sanctity of their own back yard. That is depriving someone of their property without due process, and as far as I'm concerned it is a heinous crime. I highly DOUBT that a theif is going to be hiding out in a backyard prominently marked as having a dog in it. Wanna continue pursuit? Go AROUND the F'n yard for crying out loud. :banghead:

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing cops... I think 99.9% of the officers on the streets would have had better sense than to get themselves into that predicament, and most of the rest would have found a way out without having to shoot a dog just doing what dogs are SUPPOSED to do. I AM bashing this particular IDIOT and I think an example needs to be made in the form of a very expensive PUNITIVE lawsuit to make sure it doesn't happen again.

OOOOOOHHHHHHHH this kind of thing really burns me up. :fire:
