Air Rifle Appreciation thread

Air rifles do get attention, but for most of us who have come of age and can buy firearms, they are used almost exclusively to dispatch pests in areas where discharging a firearm is ill advised.

I have an RWS model 34 and a B-S Blue Streak .20 cal, and other assorted CO2 and pump types from my childhood.

I have the crossman 1377, its a high powered air pistol, with a rifle stock affixed. I shoot at a pellet trap in my garage at 7-10 yards.
Last friday we had a party at the house, and I had all the ladies shooting it,

I still have the Sheridan Silver Streak I was given when I was 6 (I'm 43 now). I still occaisonally dig it out for teaching kids to shoot, plinking cottontails or the occaisonal tin can when I want some low key fun.

I was raised with airrifles instead of regular firearms. My father still has a finwerkbau (sp?) olympic grade match target rifle, (only I've ever seen without importers stampings) and a hammerli sidelever.

at 25 yards they make one clean hole with ten shots.

Our Red Ryder, Gamo and Shanghai are always out, next to the back door. Targets hung on the fence.

I have a great beeman R-1...it's an absolute tack-driver!

Just got a Crossman 1377 in the mail yesterday and have killed 3 tree rats with it so far. I also have a Gamo shadow 1000 but I like the 1377 for it's portability and also so the neighbors wont think I'm shooting a .22 in the back yard. I've been looking at the drozd full-auto BB gun but I don't know if it has any power behind it. I'm a big kid and love air rifles/pistols.

I have a 1077, Red Ryder, and a pump Crosman. They all work well, and I like using them. I just don't use them around here in CT right yet, since there's really nowhere to use them. Whenever I get a house and my own land, I'll once again be using them.

I got 2 of them, both have sent some animals to rodent heaven. A cheap Chinese (3B1?) with an under-barrel lever and a trigger from hell, rated 600fps, and a RWS350 with break-barrel and a very nice trigger, rated a little over 1000 fps. Both are accurate.

I'm looking for apertures for the RWS front sight. It has the German-style pointy post, like a K98K, not my favorite front sight picture.

They're good for plinking in the house, shooting from one end of the basement to the other.

i have some winchester break barrel that shoots about 1000 fps. Its dropped many varmints in the back yard.

Beeman R-7 here. Great, inexpensive, back yard trigger time.

My old Daisy Powerline (880?) is still alive and well after more than 20 years. It's one of the "dangerous" ones that caused the big lawsuit because moron kids were able to fire the gun when the chamber looked empty, so they would unknowingly shoot a BB into their brother's head or whatever...

Who the hell let's their kid treat an airgun like a toy when it is capable of firing a projectile just like a regular gun?!

Air arms TX200 in .177 cal. Awsome air rifle. Not a safe bird within 40 yards. If I had this when I was in high school there would not have been any critters or glass in the neighborhood!

I have been shooting an old Slavia 648 airgun for 38 years!

Just taught my two youngest daughters to shoot it this year.

Bought a new Beeman this year. Its fun shooting in the back yard.

My only question is, why do the new air rifles have muzzle brakes and recoil pads? Seems like unecessary cost and marketing gizmos to me.

For the money, at the time, the Talon SS was probably the best value in features for PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) airgun at the time. It had rails, was light, black (!), and an uncommonly large fill bottle meaning lots of shots per-fill and a much larger "sweet spot" of super accurate/consistent shots than most other PCPs at the time. The power dialed up to 40 ft-lbs or down to 500 shots per fill and was quieter than my 392.

Playing with home grown things to put into the barrel shroud could make the SS quiet indeed to the point the "hammer" is the loudest thing in the gun, not the shot report!

The two main downsides are slightly awkward ergos since the fill bottle is tough to get a good cheek-weld on and the really really high scope mounts which can play havok on calculating hold-over for short-ranged shots... so it's tougher to take squirrels with this gun overall. But when you hit, those hits were extremely authoritative!

Ultimately, though, I sold it because it was too expensive for the amount of shooting I was doing with it, having switched over to primarily rimfires.

During the frigid winter months I shoot a lot of air rifle at the heated 50ft indoor range. My favorite is this Beeman R7:

The accuracy is there with the both. I mainly shoot off hand but decided to see what the little R7 could do when I rested it for 5 shots @ 50 ft:

Three currently. The Webley MkIII is from way back in early 60's and shows its age! Under-lever cocking and tap loading - nice combo.

The HW35 is also back from 70's and a very nicely engineered gun - it was improved way back with an uprated spring and ''moly'' treatment. It now needs re-springing again.

Latest one was the ''Eurolux'' - obviously a Chinese but - a very efficient rifle. Claimed 1000 fps, actual is 950 and it certainly does a good job within 25 yards.
