Hey guys is it too late for me to get a gun? I nearly have my mother convinced, but with the election results it doesn't sound too good.

You are kidding, right?

What are you expecting to change in the immediate future?

For that matter, what are you expecting, in the next 10 years, to prevent you from getting "a gun"?

Please, people. Relax. Your guns aren't going anywhere.

My sense is there won't be any threat before the '08 election. They are not going to jeopardize their chances by taking on the NRA before then. Now, if they get both houses *and* the presidency, well, then worry.

Reading all the threads on here, I don't blame him for worrying. Geez, it sounds like the end of the world on this forum. "That ban is coming!" "Buy your guns now!" No wonder the world thinks we are nuts.

It's the law!

"Time to get on the buy one a month plan"

Right after the ineffective law limiting us to one handgun per month was passed, there was a bumper sticker that said:

Buy a gun a month, it's the law

Definetly raised a few eyebrows, and elicited a few chuckles.:)

Also, you live in Florida, which has a high percentage of gun owners and one of the most effective pro-RKBA organizations in the country. No, you're fine.

A lot of the Dems who won in swing states this election were pro-gun, and a some of the repubs who went down were hardcore anti's. And I don't think the Democratic party leadership is stupid enough to attempt a repeat of the 1994 debacle, even if such stupidity does exist in the halls of the DLC.

Feinstein is increasingly regarded as an extremist busybody by mainstream Dems. Be alert, but don't freak out; I don't think she wields the power that she once did.

Ah ok, reason I asked is pretty much on every political forum people are saying to buy as many guns as possible now and bury them before it's too late. I convinced my mother whos willing to let me get one, so we're going up to jay's gun shop as soon as she gets her equity loan (should be this week) and i'll probably just get a ruger 10/22 or a chinese ak47 or something.

Typical knee-jerk reaction to the election results. No need to do that.

You do know that a Ruger 10/22 and a AK-47 are two totally different animals?

Edit: Also, see dasmi's response.

Which is the best smilie for someone being hysterical?

:what:

:cuss:

I want to use it in my discussion of lots of posts.

PILMAN,
I'd also add if YOU'RE getting a gun when your MOM'S home equity loan comes thru, You aren't ready to own one.

Gem,
I don't think any of them are quite right, but given the choices I'd go with:
:what:

Actually it's a long story, I've borrowed her large sums of money to help her out during financial debt and she recently caught up with bills I am waiting for her to get home equity loan to pay me back the money I borrowed her.

It's your mom, you don't loan her money, you give her money.

She gave you life, she didn't loan it to you. She could have coathangered you before you were born.

If you need to convince your mom, it means you live at home which makes it fishy that you'd be loaning her money.

If she doesn't want you to have a gun, move out, then it won't matter. Don't waste money on a 10/22 if it's your only gun.

If you're just gonna bury it get a cheap used POS, so when the next Hurricane washes it away you won't be out too much money.:neener:

*Sigh* I pay her for rent, what I'm saying is I gave her money to help her out during difficult times, she herself said she would pay me back, I didn't request the money. I talked with her about firearms and because of the Democrats winning she realizes now that firearms maybe severely restricted so she has had some thought of change. She's willing to let me buy a gun, I never mentioned burying it, it's what others have been saying.

Not trying to bust your chops here, but the question was a little vague:

"Would now be an advisable time to buy a military-style weapon, in anticipation of possible restrictions after the election?"

Sure, no reason not to. If you'd been meaning to buy one anyway, and have put it off until now, let this be a good reminder that life is short.

A Ruger 10/22 runs about $175, and mags are around $20 ea. The rifle is not likely to be restricted anytime soon; if anything, mags over 10 rounds will be restricted. Rather than a Ruger, I'd get a Marlin 60: the tube magazine holds 18 (or the newer ones 14) rounds, and you don't have to buy extra mags because the tube is integral. You can pick 'em up left and right in Austin pawnshops for $50-75. Maybe same in your area.

Romanian AKs run as low as $300 (check www.classicarms.us for good prices), and mags are very cheap. If you're worried about a ban, buy an AK and plenty of mil-surp mags.

If price is an issue, and you're willing to put in some elbow grease, check out the single-stack AK-47s at www.impactguns.com. They have them for $219 currently: http://www.impactguns.com/store/RI1165-N.html

It can be legally converted to take the 30rd magazines, but ask around on THR for more info. If you have a Dunhams sporting-goods store in your area, I hear they might sell them ever cheaper there. $219 + $10 shipping + $20 FFL fee still isn't bad though.

First - Go out and buy that gun you've always been drooling over. The sky is falling? It's as good an excuse to buy as any, especially if your wife / parents / whoever is willing to believe it's now or never.

I agree whole heartedly with Kentek - right now, most dems are using fake sportsmen's groups like the AHSA to 'endorse' them ... and this tells us they are not trying to rock the boat at present and the most I would expect from the anti-gun crowd is for them to float a few half-hearted bills as a way of testing the waters.

Now, if Hillary / Obama win in 08 as prez / vp then yeah, it's a SHTF scenario.

Stay Cool But Alert

Folks -

I am not happy about the Dems taking at least the House, if not the Senate. But keep in mind to do it, at least 3 of the new possible senators (Casey in PA, Webb in VA, and the guy in IN) are pro-gun. House members I am not so sure of, but what I see is this.

The present generation of DEM-LIB leaders got 3rd degree burns in the fire of 1994 (and singed in 2000 and 2004), and understand that gun grabbing (and I suspect abortion) are both net vote losers AND barriers to voters who might join them on other issues. Remember that Chuckie was involved in recruiting both Casey and Webb.

What we need to do is simple:

  1. Early support and vote for the right candidates - as we see them - at every level.
  2. Stay on their radar all the time.
  3. Push the people in office to see and vote our way.
  4. Don't let Sarah see us sweat.
  5. Work the discharge petition - the way the fix of the 1968 act was pulled off in 1986 - for things like National Parks, fixing the ATF, and CCW Nationwide.
We are still on the move forward.

First the winners of this elections gotta get sworn in. That's what, January?

Then they gotta play musical offices, with the Democrats now getting the ones with the best operational A/C and views. Then they gotta add or drop staff, for Dems and Reps. Then they'll actually get down to business. Monkey business.

A bill is introduced. It goes to subcommittee for markup and hearings. Then, if it's voted out, it goes to the full committee for more markup and hearings. Then it goes to the floor of the House or Senate. Finally there are votes, and then resolution in conference committee to thrash out differences.

Then the bill goes to the President for signing. Even if signed, there's an effective date.

Worst case? Bans effective around next September. More probable, but don't quote me? Maybe in 2008...

Best bet? Pressure on the White House: "If you sign this, the Republicans can pretty much forget the gunfolks in 2008." Rove ain't stoopid.

I can see why. Great way to ridicule the law.
