Hello I am very interested in 10mm autos and was curious what options are available and what sort of future people see for the 10mm round.
Idealy the more compact and heavy the better. Small and portable, yet as heavy as possible to absorb some recoil. Suggestions?

Anything similar made of steel instead of polymer? The dimensions look nice but the weight seems far too light for a 10mm.

I'd suggest trying one before you decide it needs to weigh a ton, 10mm isn't quite the rocket charge some people make it out to be and the g29 shoots quite well.

EAA does have a small Witness in 10MM with a steel frame. I've read of problems with them on various forums so you might not get a good one. Then there's EAA poor history of warrenty work. I think Soybomb has the right choice in a small 10MM. It doesn't weight alot with the polymer frame and yet the frame will flex which helps to soften recoil like a steel frame would. If you can go to a range where you can rent one to shoot or find someone near you that has one you can shoot.

Soybomb is right . The G29 I own is an excellant shooter, even with the full power 10mm loads. It's about the smallest standard production 10 that I am personally aware of.

"...but the weight seems far too light for a 10mm."

That's because you've somehow accepted the myth that the 10mm cartridge hurts the shooter with "donkey kick" recoil. It doesn't. Even hot loads in the smallish Glock 29 are not punishing.

Actually, the Glock 10mms (20 & 29), with their flexing polymer frames, absorb recoil better than steel 10mm autos. Also, the width of the Glock's backstrap dissipates recoil, spreading it across the hand rather than into it.

If you're looking for a down-sized 10mm, the G29 fits the bill. It's a compact little powerhouse with 10+1 capacity.

My newbie vote goes to the compact Witness...

I own one - a compact steel gun in Wonderfinish. I even have a .38Super top-end conversion for it. Mine has performed flawlessly since Day 1. It's small enough and all metal with enough heft that recoil is a non-issue in 10mm. Plus, it has the ergonomics of a CZ-75 rather than a 2x4.

That Dan Wesson CCO looks like a great CCW weapon.

But out of the commercially available guns, I really think the Glock 29 is tops.

I carry a glock 29 every day, shoot it every week. don't let the "painful recoil" naysayers get you down. the glock 29 is "just about right" for a carry gun, and shoots great. I recommend the "grip extention" magazine baseplates if your hands are big. (like mine)

Thank you for your suggestions, I just visited the CA approved list and learned the only choices I have in 10mm period are:
Smith & Wesson 610-3 / Stainless Steel Revolver 3.87"
Glock 20C / Steel, Polymer Pistol 4.6" 10mm
Glock 20 / Steel, Polymer Pistol 4.60" 10mm
Glock 20 OD / Steel, Polymer Pistol 4.60" 10mm
Glock 29 / Steel, Polymer Pistol 3.78" 10mm
Glock 29 OD / Steel, Polymer Pistol 3.78" 10mm
Kimber Eclipse Custom II / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 10mm
Kimber Stainless Target 10mm II / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 10mm

That pretty much means G29 if I want a compact 10mm. Thank you all for the unnecessary recomendations. Unfortunately I am in CA :cuss: . At least most recomended the one choice I have :)
Not only that but the Glock 29 / Steel, Polymer Pistol 3.78" 10mm, the black one's license to be sold in CA runs out on 4/4/2007 and with the new CA handgun requirements if Glock does not renew it..:banghead:

I hear 10mm loses a lot of it's edge over .40 in shorter barrels, the trade off might not be worth it... This is for a ccw?

Actualy after doing quite a bit of research on the G29 it sounds great. It holds 10 rounds, the legal limit in California, without being neutered to accomplish it. The options of the 10mm are there, and with a .40 conversion I can have the use of the common .40 in a less 'kaboom' prone package and still be able to use 10mm when it is more suitable.

Zoogster,

I'm sure many others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that by far the greatest number of kabooms in Glocks are in .40 S&W guns, not 10mm's.

Shoot,

I think he is referring to the fact that there are conversion barrels for the G29 to .40S&W which provide much more case support than a factory .40 S&W Glock barrel.

10mm from short barrels.

I hear that with the stoutest of loads, the Glock 29 only loses about 60-80fps. when compared with the Glock 20. Heavier bullets tend to lose the least amount. IMO the Glock 29 is still alot more stout than the Glock 22 ( .40 ). The barrel may seem short to some, but they tend to forget that it's not much less than 4 inches, plus the polygonal rifling should compensate for the measly .2 inches.

180gr. FMJ practice load from Doubletap

Glock 20 - 1250 fps.
Glock 29 - 1198 fps.

Another vote for the G29. Before taking mine to the range for the first time, I didn't figure it would be so easy to shoot.

The G29 is a great little gun. My petite wife shoots it comfortably with full power loads. You can get over seven hundred ft/lbs with DoubleTap ammo.

I used the +2 extensions on my ten rounders, making the grip full. Though that isn't a "legal" option for you in California.

My top 180 grain handloads produce 790 ft/lbs from a 5" gun. That number drops to 721 ft/lbs from my 3.5" Witness compact, still putting it well ahead of the .40 S&W from a full size.

My nastiest .40 S&W loads using 155 grain pills develop 534 ft/lbs when fired from my 4" S&W 4006. The 135 grainers get 551 FPE, but the lighter bullets do not get the penetration. In contrast, 10mm loads with 135 grain bullets get well over 800 FPE, but the bullets fragment completely with less than 7" of penetration.

If teh Witness Compact or DW CCO are not on the CA approved list, your options for a compact 10mm are the G29, G29 or G29.

The flexing frame helps dampen recoil a bit on the G29. And so does the recoil spring design. Same thing as its brother handgun, same form-factor, the superb G30.

Who makes .40S&W conversion barrels for the G29 specifically? I've seen them for the G20 but not for the G29.
