Going through my gun cabinet (stuff that won't fit in the safe), I found my old Maverick 88. I remember this shotgun was offered by Mossberg and seemed like a solid, no-frills shotty.
However, if I'm not mistaken, I do believe it was this shotgun that had a Winchester Super-X 3" 00B magnum "self eject". The bolt somehow broke loose and flew to the rear, sending the shell out the ejection port like an auto. It took me a second to realize how wrong that was, as the pump was still in the forward position. I stripped it down and found nothing wrong internally.
Several hundred of various shells later, it never happened again.

What's the general consensus concerning the quality of Maverick shotguns, particularly the 88? Besides that one harmless incident, I've been very pleased, but still wonder if these bargain shotguns are recommended to handle the hottest 3" magnums.

Thanks in advance!

I've never had problems with mine. I've put a number of federal 3 inch magnum's through without problems, also a variety of slugs. Plastic stock and forearm is a bit rough, but action is solid. Durable, reliable, and inexpensive, and parts are interchangable with the 500. Cant go wrong with mossberg.

To my knowledge the only shotgun using the Maverick name is the 88. Either way its a Mossberg 500 with a different safety location.

Mines been great.....

We used a Maverick 88 one summer at camp as a substitute clay pigeon gun. It ran through about 500 rounds of 12 ga. target loads a week. Never a problem.

A no frills slug gun, turned Turkey gun with a barrel off a 500.
I have owned one for about 15 years now. Since then have a dedicated bird gun, but I still use the smoothbore for deer. Ugmo (m88) is showing it's age and has the classic mossberg front end rattle. But it also refuses to die. Couldn't say how many rounds through it - how about a crap load.

Frankenvrick or Mossenstein serves as the HD gun at Festung Scout.
It's began life as PGO Maverick 88, but now has some Mossberg parts (wood stock and trigger assembly; yep, that means it doesn't have a safety) to turn it into a plain jane, solid HD gun. Probably 3-4K rounds through it of buck, slugs and target loads. Had it out two Sunday's ago and ran 10 rounds of slugs, 10 rounds of 00 buck, shot two rounds of trap and a round of skeet with target loads. Took it home, gave it a good cleaning with Ed's Red, stoked it to cruiser ready mode with new service ammo and back into the safe. It stands ready to defend home and hearth.

Never any issues.

Don't own one myself but know people that do. A good reliable, inexpensive compared to many others shootgun. The only detractors are the snobs with the high dollar guns.

Maverick 88

Yeah, got mine used for $150 (Too much?) Well, damn it, not too much. I cleaned about 5 lbs. of cattail fluff out of it and lubed it up (I"m weird-when I'm in the mood, I'd almost rather clean my guns than shoot them.{No, I don't offer next day service} It's weird what a fractured spine will make a man do). I'd fired it about 3 times when I finally got my wife to pull the string on the trap rig and then busted 85%. Almost all after market stuff for 500's will fit (some exceptions) and when I last cleaned it I went all out and took out the bolt and messed with the receiver. Now, I'm not very smart, but putting the think back together made me promise things to satan that I have no right to offer. So take dig photos or sketch the pieces in place 'for moving 'em or just don't be inept like me. Pure functionality, not much character, They get the job done.
Didn't the make a slug gun/cop cruiser called the 98 or something? Mine handles 3" mags better than I do...

Rev,

I paid $150 for my Maverick new from Wal-Mart. If there is a Dicks Sporting Goods nearby the have sales occasionally for the Maverick 88 at around $125 to $130 dollars.

but you already own it, it works good and you trust it.....I wouldnt be to concerned.
