I'm torn what rifle to buy (one this month & I'll probally pick up my 2nd choice ~Feb.).
Purpose will purely be plinking and target shooting. Ammo must be suitable for indoor use (so no 7.62x39 etc).

Thoughts? Price is a consideration. Fun factor is the second consideration.

The PS90 seems like the most fun, but ammo is the most $ and the gun itself is the most $.
FAL's price is right, but just kinda bleh on fun.
PTR's price is just as attractive & I'm luke-warm on the fun.
XCR looks cool (=+fun factor), kinda pricey.
SLR-106FR, price is certainly right. Good platform, but I already have an ak (albeit in 7.62, so I can't use it indoors & I don't get to an outdoor range more than ~3-4 times a year). So fun is higher, but it is somewhat of a rehash whereas the others are all new (only other rifles I have are several AR types).
Sig 556 is going for far too much atm, so no go for the moment.

Thoughts? I'm sure most here are either 1) tired of posts like this or 2) enjoy helping spend others $$$.

Looks like they are all fine rifles, but I always suggest the AK. When the chips are down the AK will almost always go boom.

I always remember that story from one of Col Hackworth's books about an Army bulldozer uncovering a dead VC that has met his demise a year before and Hackworth reaching down and grabbing the dead man's AK and telling his comrades, "wanna see how a real military rifle works?" The Col. then fires off thirty rounds.

surprising amt of support for the fal

so what's the benefit of the fal over the ptr?

The PS90, with it's high capacity mag (that no one needs for duck hunting) and the armor piercing/copkiller ammunition, will be on the way out quickly I would guess. That would be my choice of the group.

The US built battle rifle clone's don't hold much interest for me personally. Although I like the idea of them, if I wanted a heavy battle rifle I'd probably go for an M!.

My proof for firearm fun:

Fun = acutal shooting

acutal shooting = less reloading * lots of ammo.

Ammo is varialbe of price and disposable income.

Thus cheaper ammo = more ammo

More ammo*less reloading = acutal shooting = more fun

I would go with the AK in 5.56, I got a CETME, great gun, .308 a man's caliber. How ever cheap ammo is not that abundend. Thus me being on a poor college budget means I have less actual shooting and less fun. :-(

YMMV on this proof however...

i love the ak, and belive that everyone should have at least one, but since i already have one and if i had the money i would get the fal, for one because i don't have one, and 2 because i want one!:)

Voted for the FAL...

So many things have been said about it that it would be useless for me to recount them there...

I will simply state this...

"The right arm of the free world"

Long term use and parts availability = FAL. The P90 is a pretty steep investment for a short barreled varminter.

I had the AR-15 bug for quite a few years, then I bought a FAL..... I haven't thought about an AR since.

I have had my FAL for 6 months and I am allready working on a second, they are so much fun to shoot.:D

A PS90 would be neat for bragging rights, but given the high cost of ammo and the mediocre reviews of the civilian model, it wouldn't be my first choice.

The PTR-91 is supposed to be just as nice as the FAL. I have never handled one, but people seem to rave about theirs. It scores slightly lower than the FAL in my book due to the smaller range of after market parts.

An AK is an AK, you either love them or hate them. If you're the type that loves them then I would put a Arsenal AK pretty high on the list. If you're not so big on them, save a few hundred $$ and buy one of the cheaper romainian or yugos.

I had an AR for awhile. It was even a nice one -- RRA lower, DPMS upper, quad rail, ACE skeleton stock, etc. I sold it last weekend. I am NOT, however, gonna sell my SA58, PTR-91 or Arsenal AK.

And like FabulousFink, I'm already dreaming of my second FAL....

This may sound like a dumb question, but why are .223 and .308 "suitable for indoor use", but 7.62x39 is not?
must be brass cased for indoors
I'm unaware of any brass cased 7.62 (especially for a decent price).

<FAL's price is right, but just kinda bleh on fun.>

Ever shoot a 16" carbine SA58 with a good picatinny forend? Its my favorite gun, favorite thing I have ever fired actually, bar none.

Although, a .308 is hardly an indoor type of gun.

My dad works for C3 Sports, a licensed NFA (SOT) dealer. They have an SA58 OSW select fire for demo purposes. It's a short barreled (14"? 11"? Can't exactly remember). That thing is about the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
