Anyone have any advice?? both seem like nice pistols. I am buying by the end of the week and wondering if anyone has experience with both or one or the other??
Thanks, Bill

My P228...

is my favorite 9mm pistol. It seems to aim pretty naturally for me. With an IWB holster it will pretty much disappear even when I'm just wearing a t-shirt. The only modification I've done is to install night sights (me-pro, I think).

I like it better than the P229's I've shot due to the serrations at the back of the slide going all the way to the top of the side of the slide rather than only half way up on the P229.

I don't have any experience with the H&K P2000 so my endorsement probably has little utility for you.

Where did you find a P228? I didn't think they were currently in production.

Sig 228s available as CPOs

I see them here as new (CPO 228s) for $585.
WONDERFUL pistols.
The P2K is only nicer in one way:If you want to mount a light.
I don't mount lights, the 228 wins.

I've shot both quite a bit. They're both excellent choices. There are a few differences in controls and trigger, and the biggest difference being that one is metal, the other polymer. I could go on for hours with all the details and positives of each, but it is pointless.

At this point, you've already guaranteed buying a top-notch quality pistol by narrowing it down to these - so reliability and quality issues are a non-issue.

I think the biggest factor in the buying decision should not be the features, since these are excellent pistols, but rather which one fits you best. Hold each in a gunshop or gunshow. Find which one feels best in the hand, which one naturally points well for you. Which one has the best ergonomics for your hand. Believe me, you'll be able to shoot a pistol that fits you better that has a worse trigger than a different pistol that fits you poorly, but has a better trigger. In my view, fit is #1. Ergonomics of controls are #2. Trigger is #3. You can learn to shoot any of these triggers well, and none are really bad at all.

The Sig and the HK have different grips. It isn't likely both will fit you exactly the same. One is surely going to be better for you.

P228 without a second thought. I have shot both and much much prefer the P228, as much as I wanted to love the P2000 it just wasn't happening.

Very tough choice. Both are excellent options. Although I love my P2000, I'll have to give the nod to the P228. You can find a CPO for a much cheaper price than the P2000, and they're both very fun to shoot. But when it comes down to it, the SIG has a smoother trigger better pointability, and better fit and finish.

Dang tough choice. Flip a coin. Either way you're gonna walk away happy.

Another vote for the SIG P-228. Mine has become my favorite non-1911 pistol, and favorite 9MM, period. The 228 is just so perfectly balanced, and fits most hands so well ... 100% reliable and highly accurate.

I have all the respect in the world for H&Ks (my issue pistol at work is the USP-9), regarding them as durable, accurate and supremely reliable as well. The SIGs simply "feel" better to me.

I haven't had the privilege to shoot the P2000, but I have shot a P228. It's a REALLY nice pistol, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if I were in the market for another 9mm.

I would vote P2000 based on my personal experience with both. The HKs have been much more reliable.

I love, repeat, LOVE my HK USP45

but honestly, in 9mm, I'd take the SIG228. I have a SIG229, and it is the best 9mm that i have ever fired. I wanted a Beretta 92 since I was in 8th grade, I turned 21 and it was the second pistol that I bought, and i thought that it was great, then i shot a SIG229. I sold the Beretta the next day to buy a 229. IMHO, the SIG has a better trigger, is just as reliable, is just as accurate, and just as user friendly as the P2000. So, as much as I hate not recomending a HK, I feel it is my duty. If you were talking about the SIG220 VS the USP45, I would go with the USP each and every time, despite the 220's better trigger. After all, the USP45 is what sits on my night stand with a light/lazer combo and 12 Federal Hydrashocks in the mag. I LOVE my HK, but in your case, the scale tips slightly in favor of the 228.

The SIG feels better in my hand, and I used to shoot it better, but after the gov't "made" me put several thousand rounds through the P2000 I've grown pretty fond of it. It's a toss up :)

The Sig handguns I own and every other one I've ever seen firsthand have been 100% reliable. While gbelleh's experience may differ, to say that HK is much more reliable than Sig is simply not true. IMHO, they're equal in that regard.

Ergonomically, I prefer the P228. I think it's the finest all-purpose 9mm autoloader on earth.

1st - Welcome to THR ;)

Me, I'm an HK guy, one that like the P2000 :D SO, I will voice on the "Get the HK!" side

I've owned HKs. Great handguns. But...my choice is:
