I have been lurking for a while and finally decided to join today, I will limit my posting until I am sure that I'm am not asking stupid questions. I look forward to soaking up as much usefull information as possible, and would like to thank both the members and moderators for everything I have learned so far.

Using search to avoid "stupid" questions

Don't sweat the "stupid questions" part too much. Trust me, everyone in this forum has asked a few of those. I've probably got more than my share.

(Some would give me a hard time and say I've asked more stupid ones than not. )

It's good that you are aware of possibilities, and that you are willing to study a bit before asking too much.

But as long as members think a little before they ask (as you clearly and commendably plan to do), maybe do at least some archive searching (SEARCH is your friend - see below), questions are unlikely to be "stupid". Elementary maybe, sometimes even naive, but that's what we're here for: to increase our knowledge about firearms and their safe, responsible use. One of the best ways to accomplish that goal is to read a lot of archives and current threads, then ask questions, and - eventually - to do one's share of answering some.

Speaking of SEARCH, for new members, I recommend exploring that a bit if you haven't already.

You'll note that "Search" exists in the top menu of not only the THR homepage, but on every subforum (rifles, shotguns, pistols, etc) AND for every thread (like this one).

So, for example, if I were looking for information about stocks for Remington 870's, I'd go to Shotguns, click on search and enter "stock". I wouldn't search "870 stock", because that would yield any thread on EITHER "870" OR "stock", not just "870" AND "stock". That's because the search functionality of the forum software (leased by THR, not written by) is relatively minimal. It doesn't allow more advanced search features like "870" AND "stock".

(I'm pretty sure I'm right about that, but others will correct me if I'm wrong.)

However, one can search THR forums by using google (or other search engines) and they do allow more advanced search options to hone in on your specific topic. (E.g., best revolver - caliber larger than .38 spl but smaller than .45 casull - suitable for flying spagetti monsters, etc.)

Once search dishes up a page or 30 of threads on your topic of interest, then you can search thread titles for keywords indicating that it could be an informative thread for you. (Of course, danger lies there in. I can't count the number of times I've been searching for topic A, but get diverted onto even more interesting topics B - E during searches, and wind up spending hours reading... )

{Also, reading thread titles looking for a particular topic will help you understand why it's important to create a good title for any threads you start. It's frustrating than to find threads with titles like "Help me make a decision!" Try to indicate what you're asking for advice about, being as specific or general as you need.)

Once you open a particular thread that you've found using search, you'll find that you can search it for the keyword as well, and go right to the post(s) that have it.

You'll also find that when you open a thread found by SEARCH, the keywords you are interested in will be represented in red, so you can find them easily by scrolling and scanning the thread.

Im mainly interested in self protection and the preservation of the laws regarding gun ownership. Last year both parents got their CWL's and this march Ill be applying for my own. I still havent decided on what to get (leaning towards the glock 29) but still keeping my eyes open to what others think.

First and foremost, Mr. Nukum, thank you for making many games in the 90's that were fun and hilarious.

Secondly, I would like to introduce myself a little, as I have made a couple of posts on THR, and have spent many hours reading the threads and learning so much! My name (as you may have guessed) is Peter, and I'm from Seattle, now living in Olympia, WA. Politically, I am what some may call a libertarian/liberal, but I personally don't feel like I fit into that category (a self-proclaimed moderate), but no matter what you call it, one thing I certainly don't take lightly is the rights guarenteed to me by this country's Bill of Rights and Constitution. My parents came to America (where I was born) to escape the communist regime in the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia at the time), and because of that I feel at least a little more grateful of the freedom we are given in this country of ours, and am very willing to exercise and defend that freedom.

As far as my collection goes, I'm just starting to build it up, as I have recently started my career in the IT field, and actually have a job that isn't retail, since I graduated from the Evergreen State College with a BA (at only 20!)

I'm a firefighter/paramedic in DFW TX. Married, with 3 sons. Texas CHL for 6 years. I hunt fish and like guns. I have built a few FALs, and ARs. I am starting to build some AKs now too. Had a C&R and aquired several rifles; K31s, Moisins 44, 91/59, Finn 39, Mausers, SKSs, and some others that I can't rmember right now.
Glock handguns are my carry guns, usually a 26.

Hi....just wanted to introduce myself. Real name is Mike. I'm kinda new into guns...got my first rifle, a Savage .300 Win-Mag last year, and received a Remington Semi-Auto 12 Gauge from my FIL this past October for my B-Day. I'm looking into buying a handgun, and was directed to this board as a great place to learn about them. I'm taking a CCW class in my local area - they are supplying me a gun to train with....but I want to purchase my own handgun before I apply for my license. I live in Wayne County MI.

I'm looking for something in expensive >$400. I was looking into .40 and .45's but really don't know a whole lot about the brands of guns and who makes good low end guns and who doesn't.

So I'll be searching around the site, lurking and listening, and hoping to pick up on some of the expertise around here. I've already done a little lurking, and it's been very interesting.

New to THR from central Ohio, Licking County.

I've been around guns off and on my whole life, but it wasn't until recently that I finally became a gun owner. I bought the Smith and Wesson M&P Compact 9mm, as pictured here:

I've only put about 350 rounds through it so far but I'm already completely in love with it. It's just such a comfortable gun, I could shoot it all day and not have a sore hand/wrist like with some other handguns. I sure don't mind the 12 round clip either.

A friend of mine who goes by hcker2000 turned me on to THR. I joined mainly to meet people in my area to shoot with. I live within city limits in Licking County, Ohio, so I can either keep throwing my money away on expensive ranges or hopefully meet someone who has some land in the country nearby and work out an arangement there. Please send me a message with contact info if this is you! If you live in my area feel free to drop me a line if you have any advice on where I could shoot for cheap. I'd like to be able to do trash shooting (old tv's, etc) and I am more than willing to clean up after myself and follow any safety rules.

I am also very interested in obtaining my Concealed Carry Permit, and have heard rumours of instructors who will do the required training very inexpensively. If you know anything about this, please drop me a line. Well thats all for now folks, thanks a lot. I'll be talking to ya!

just joined today. i've visited this site before and it is definitely well run and seems like a good place for a newbie to get started. i don't own any guns presently and have only gone shooting once in my life. i'm going to start up with some shooting classes for beginners and once that's done will eventually purchase a firearm. i'm mostly interested in learning shooting for self defense. i don't hunt (but have nothing against hunting). i'm interested in purchasing a handgun and also a shotgun/scattergun for home defense. well that's about it. thanks for having me.

new member recently bought stevens 200 .223

I recently bought a stevens 200 .223, then equipped it with a 10001 limbsaver recoil pad.

Then I got a OLD redfield 4x mounted on it with weaver bases and millett medium rings at sportsman's warehouse.

I ajusted the trigger to about 4 lbs pressure from instructions I found on internet.

BUT HERE IS A PROBLEM.

Dry firing I read on internet doesn't damage a stevens 200.

So I experimented lots.

The trigger pressure seems uneven.

Banging the but on the floor can cause the rifle to go from fire to safe.

VERY INFREQUENTLY, about one in 20 times, when I slam the bolt forward, then the firing pin moves ahead when the bolt is lowered.

Scary.

Please advise.

I bought rcbs dies, 55 gr hornady vmax, varget, cci small rife primers. But I would like to resolve this issue before proceeding.

Newb to this site

OK I was in the Marine Corp for 7 years 93-00 and love guns. When I got home I had a few guns but sold em off as I went back to school and needed cash and lacked the funds to enjoy them anyway. I know rifles more than handguns and admittedly shoot rifles better. Well I have more time and cash to buy guns and use them so I'm back. Shooting for free was way better lol. Anway only have a Taurus pt138 380 cal (teaching the wife how to shoot) and my Lee Enfield as of now. I will buy 2-5 more some time soon. All my friends make me jealous with their arsenals. Seems like a cool site and I need to gain more knowledge.

Thx guys, I will have lots of questions, lol! Quality is my biggest concern and I understand my Taurus is very average? I never liked the Berreta I shot in the Corp. I liked my buds glock 9mm a whole lot though.

Welcome to THR. First off, we like to call them "collections" around here, not "arsenals" If you're jealous of what your friends have, just wait until you see some of the collections people around here post.. that can just drive you crazy ! The trick of course is remain undaunted as 10-Ring said, and slowly acquire what you like, when you can afford it. Important to always remember is that you can't eat or live in a gun, and trying to play catch up with some of these guys will just zero out your bank account before you know it.. hehe.

LOL, I drag race cars for fun, now thats a money hole as you break stuff all the time and your never fast enough so I know what your saying. I need a nice M16, 45, 9mm and I'll be OK with that and the two guns I own. I would however LOVE to own a 249 S.A.W or GULF as they are called now.

I've lurked for a few months. Have learned a good bit now, and figured it was a good time to jump on in.

I regestered here a "while" back and shortly after my machine crashed and lost all my links. I stumbled back in doing searchs for info on 45/70's which I plan on adding to the collection soon. I have spent the better part of the last 20yrs working L.E., E.P. or security for DoD stuff. Last year I got tired of all the crap in South Florida and moved me and my family to North Georgia. For the moment I am working for GDC to keep my POST Certs current and getting my instructor ratings back up to speed.

I am a FALaholic and like AR's as well. As far as semi handguns go 1911's are as close to perfection as it gets anything else is tring to reinvent the wheel. I have several leverguns and wheelguns that I like to play with but my favorite is a Marlin 1894CP and a Ruger B/V both in .357 that I use for plinking and hunting.
