Y'all are forgetting physiological reactions to stress, folks. Crimals are human too. They experience stess in stressful situations. They experience tunnel vision and auditory exclusion just as their victims do.

He's focused on his primary victim, who he had decided was the one to control. Probably was focused on him to the point that he didn't even know the woman had moved until she opened fire on him.

Oh, the lawsuit thingie ain't gonna happen. This didn't happen in New York or Maryland or some other state with strange laws and stranger juries. SC lawyers know SC juries and like to get paid. Ain't but one way this woman will be sued and that is if the would be carjacker plunks down some lawyer's fee in cash and in full on the barrel and up front. Won't be any taking the suit on contingency because there is not a contingency of getting a judgement in the state of South Carolina in this case. Shooting him in the butt is not going to have any effect on anything except a Columbia PD cop suggesting she practice often and get some training.

Ah, I look forward to his fellow inmates demanding his paperwork, (to make sure he's not a sex offender), and discovering he was shot in the butt by a woman while running away. His name in prison will be changed, to Amanda.:D

UPDATE:
Woman praised for foiling robbery

Would-be carjacker is shot in parking lot of Wal-Mart; police link him to string of robberies

Police are indebted to a woman who shot an armed carjacker in a Wal-Mart parking lot Saturday — a suspect in nine other armed robberies, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said Tuesday.
Harold Levar Jeffcoat, 29, was arrested Sunday at Providence Hospital Northeast after seeking treatment for a gunshot wound in his buttocks.
Police said a man was shot as he attempted to rob a couple getting into their car outside the Two Notch Road Wal-Mart about 9 p.m. Saturday.
The male victim, whose identity wasn’t disclosed, told police the attacker pushed a gray pistol into his stomach and demanded the keys to the car.
The unidentified woman reached into the car and pulled a pistol from the glove box, according to a sheriff’s report. She fired five shots at the attacker, who dropped his pistol as he ran away. He fled in a burgundy Buick.
“We’re kind of hailing (the man and woman) as heroes,” Lott said.
He said police don’t encourage people to go out and “just start shooting,” but they do encourage people to protect themselves.
Jeffcoat, who is accused in 10 armed robberies in Richland County and Columbia in less than a month, has an arrest record dating back 12 years.
Jeffcoat, of Palmetto Drive in Columbia, is charged with:
• Nine counts of armed robbery
• One count grand larceny motor vehicle
• One count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, according to information from the Columbia Police and Richland County Sheriff’s departments
Lott said more charges are pending.
Jeffcoat is accused of robbing several businesses and individuals between Dec. 19 and Jan. 13, and was the Midlands Most Wanted in The State newspaper Monday.

Good Shot!!!

Hello all,

I am from the NE side too. This Wal-Mart is where my family does some of its shopping. I have my CWP and do not carry 100 % of the time. That is going to change. That is very good advise Byron Quick, thank you.

I have lived on the Northeast Columbia side for over 10 years now and have seen changes for the worse. More gang issues showing up.

There was also a shooting at the Waffle House on Hard Scrabble Road not too long ago. (Great news coverage!)

I hope the information on the ammo/guns not going to be sold at Wal-Mart does not come to light. I get all my handgun ammo there too.

This site is pretty much my morning news paper and I want to thank the regulars for all the good information and to the local posters thanks also.

The last part of the article does piss me off a bit:

Obey the robber’s commands. Robbers are less likely to injure if you cooperate.

The cops wouldn't have gotten this guy if the woman had followed this rule.

The second part makes me wonder if the crook's gun was even loaded. Getting out the car door of a carjacking makes sense, he shouldn't want you in the vehicle (otherwise it's kidnapping, and the best rule for kidnapping is: Resist with all your might). Rooting around the glove compartment is suspicious.

I agree though, she needs to work on her aim a bit.

Well, tonight would be a good night for her to practice. It's ladies night at Shooter's Choice - free range time for her and a guest.

Good Afternoon All, this is a great site. ZF

It would be interesting to see the video recording...

News accounts of such incidents are notoriously lacking in crucial detail. No way to intelligently do a post hoc using the article as the sole source of info.

But, anyway, kudos to the lady. She and her companion are alive, the BG has an extra body aperture and is in jail for a long time.

Harbison and West Cola Wal-Marts still have ammo - Harbison still has guns. Not sure about the one on Forrest Drive.

The Forest Drive WM has some ammo (not much) and a few accesories- no guns. The entire hunting section is pretty tiny. I usually get my ammo at either the Garners Ferry WM or the one out in Sumter when I'm visiting Shaw AFB.

I don't think I realized there were so many Columbia people hanging around here. Maybe I'll run into some of y'all out at the Mid Carolina range one day.

Maybe it's time to start a get together over on the Rallying Point for a Mid Carolina shoot? This time though with enough pre planning so we can all make it. I'm not a member (yet) so I cannot start this up.

Why in hell would you carjack someone at Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart shoppers are more likely to be armed, and less likely to drive an expensive car, than, say, Macy's shoppers.

Street criminals aren't rocket scientists, I guess.:D

In the buttocks

You can shoot someone in the buttocks if they're facing sideways; not necessarily a running shot just because it hit him in the rump.

Also, regarding the border patrol: Why would a border patrol agent go to prison for shooting a wal-mart carjacker? Is that like doctors not being protected by the good samaritan law, or what?

Sharps

Actually, the Border Patrol dudes are going to jail for shooting a drug smuggler.

Who has continued to smuggle.

And who has been pardoned and allowed to return to plying his trade.

His testimony was instrumental in convicting the Border Patrol agents.

I'm sure there's a thread on it here somewhere.

I'll have to start something in the near future. It'd be good to meet some local THR'ers.

I'll actually be shooting out at Mid Carolina Saturday morning, weather permitting. If anyone wants to meet out there or be my guest at the range, just shoot me a PM.

It's a small world after all, eh? I've been in Columbia a little over a year and finally got around to joining Mid-Carolina a few months ago. Just haven't had much time to go. After hearing about this, I've gotta get off my butt and get my CWP NOW.

Forest Drive WM had ammo as of a few weeks ago.

The only good thing about being wounded in the buttocks is the ice cream. They gave me all the ice cream I could eat. - Forest Gump

I get the feeling that "Forest" here won't be eating much ice cream down in county. Should be amusing to see him laying there with his butt bandaged while the other inmates pilfer through his commisary.

It's also ok to shoot someone with their back to you if they are in the process of attacking someone else, and the threat is immediate and there is danger of death or serious injury. So don't think that shooting someone in the back, or from behind, is always cowardly. Sometimes you do it to save someone else's life.

Check out the letter to the editor today.... I wonder how this woman would feel if the carjacker had been at the Wal-Mart when SHE was there!

• Police too quick to call shooter heroine

The very first line in the Jan. 17 article “Woman praised for foiling robbery” says: “Police are indebted to a woman who shot an armed carjacker.” Then: “The unidentified woman reached into the car and pulled out a pistol.... She fired five shots at the attacker.” Sheriff Leon Lott said, “We are kind of hailing (the man and woman) as heroes.”

These statements far outweigh the following statement, “police don’t encourage people to go out and ‘just start shooting.’”

Too late! Already, police are indebted to us for shooting a carjacker, and it is OK for us to shoot a gun in the parking lot of a busy, family-oriented store, and we are “almost” instant heroes for performing such acts.

Acting on impulse is one matter. But having time to assess the situation and then speak about it is an entirely different matter.

I am a grandmother, and I go to Wal-Mart often. My husband is disabled and usually sits in the car while I am in the store. I sure am glad that I was not at Wal-Mart on Saturday night (with my grandchild and my husband) when there was an apparent gunfight at the OK Corral.

Those of us in trusted positions should consider how we sum up the events of a precarious predicament.

While I do very much agree with, and commend this lady for defending herself and her companion, I think 5 shots and only 1 hit (in the rump) in a busy parking lot may be a bit excessive. Maybe this woman needs to work on her aim if she wants to carry a gun and use it.
I'm just glad she didn't hit an innocent bystander and glad she did eventually hit the bad guy.
Bottom line: Kudos to her. Maybe she can get into a range and hone those skills. She has already done the hard part by finding out if she would actually use lethal force if needed.
I do like the thought of the bad guy getting a huge rotting infection and passing on to the big parking lot downstairs where everyone is armed.
