HOWDY! I'm a Marine stationed out in SoCal and origionally from ND...it's amazing and saddening how many hippie gun-hater laws they have out here...I wanna go back to ND and buy a gun without all of the red tape. Later folks.

Hello Everyone,

I found this place from other forums during the elections last year. I was interested in staying in the political loop as far as 2nd Amendments rights go (I found that normal sources for my political news only talk about 2nd amendment issues when some nutbag shoots up an unarmed victims zone). Since then I have fallen in love with pretty much every part of the forums as well.

I am 17 years old and was introduced to shooting by my uncle when I was eight (we shot .22lr rifles and pistols on his ranch during Easter). My father and mother never owned a firearm, but luckily were not antis. After three years of responsible air rifle ownership my mother agreed to sign the papers for my first .22lr (Savage Stevens Model 62 for $99) at the age of 14.

Now for most of my teens I was more interested in fireworks then firearms (mostly because it was easier to find a safe place to set of firecrackers then there were to shoot firearms), and the Savage saw little use (about 1,000 round a year). Over the last year though, I lost all my interest in firecrackers and really feel in love with guns (maybe because I will be able to buy my own soon).

My current collection is:

Savage Stevens Model 62 .22lr
Marlin 60 Stainless Steel .22lr
Mosin Nagant M44 7.62x54r

The Nagant is actually my step fathers. However, I am the one that cleans and stores it. I also had the fun of getting all the cosmoline out of it. After all of that I kind of started claiming it as my own.

Oh, and I also use too many commas and parenthesis in my typing (like you didn't already notice). :D

Hello THR members...name is John and I first would like to thank Zak Smith for all the great information he has written it has helped me out tremendously. I am former Army Ordnance and have always had a passion for firearms since I was a kid and found myself a decent long range shot in the military,,,needless to say I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn at 20 meters...hah...I am currently having a custom rifle built and will be looking forward to one day competeing in Tactical Shootout events. Thanks for the great site!!! Take care...John

Howdy! My name is Todd, and I live in the Pacific Northwet... Seattle area to be a little more descriptive. My interest in guns is from a defensive and sporting (hunting and IDPA). I am also an NRA member and certified instructor.

Hi. My name is Dan. Paco is one of our chihuahuas. I love to punch holes in paper but I don't own any hunting rifles, just a whole bunch of milsurps and EBR's.

I guess I think along the lines of Biker, Longeyes, Molon Labe etc. I spent 8 years in Army intell (yea I know, jumbo shrimp), three months as a police dispatcher, and 6 years as a correctional officer at county level between Baltimore and D.C.

Long, long time lurker but I love this forum. Glad to be here finally I'll try to stay out of L+P as much as possible for now.

Hello folks!

Hi there,

I am a brand new shooter having taken up Trap Shooting in the past two months. I live in the Northern Virginia area and have been watching threads here for a while. I finally decided to jump out there and get involved. I too am watching and reading what people say to learn as much as I can.

I don't own a gun yet, still looking for the perfect fit. Probably the same reason I am still single :)

Welcome to THR folks!

There's room for gun tot'n hippies and pistol pack'n conservatives and every persuasion (even some anti's come to have reasonable discussions with us) here as long as everyone remembers their commitment to keeping the coversation civil and at a high level. No insults, no name calling and we'll keep this the best place on the net.

Oh yeah, "search" is your friend. Search THR as a whole or the particular forum you're in and you'll find gold burried there. We've had some great contributors pass away in the nearly five years this place has been open so you shouldn't miss their contributions if you can help it.

Enjoy!

BTW, we've even got a group of knife nuts here also.

Hmmm myself:

I started shooting in 1961 at an NRA sponsored air rifle course at a local park. I came up through exclectic groups of shooters from my friends uncle with his converted BOYS rifle (.50 cal) to the Class III community...

Over the years I was somewhat just "normal" about my shooting (mediocre) until the 70's when I came across IPSC just atfer Jeff had moved it down from Arrowhead. It was GREAT! Practical pistol shooting at it's best! Shot IPSC competitively until 1982 at which time a disagreement about the state of ISPC split the South West Pistol League in half, half stayed to shoot with the compensated pistols/money match stuff, the rest of us wanted to stay more in tune with "Practical" and non-compensated pistols (Now IDPA). Was friends with some of the classics, including several of the instructors for Jeff's school, Armond Swenson, etc etc etc. During those years, we used to shoot a minimum of 1000 rounds a month (but 3000 rounds a month was not abnormal) and that was the old ISPC load of 5.8 to 6.0 of 231 behind a H&G 68. That was hardball equivelent. Got the Arthritus to prove it! None of this light loaded .38 super.. or even 9mm. In those days we used a great press called a Star, if you were good, you could actually load 1000 rnds an hour. By the 80s a good competitive year in IPSC cost 5 to 6K.. no kidding!

I also have a love of long distance rifle shooting. Have shot NRA Hipower and PALMA matches since the 70's when I was using an M21 (accuraized M14) or a tuned M1A. Bought my first M1A way back when (Springfield meant Devine Tx and an M1A cost $3/400). I used to build and/or tune M14s, M1 Garands, Match rifles... loved it. Used to work on ,45's.. but quit 45 work quickly! And if anyone ever thinks a decent Military rifle can't shoot over 3-400 yards, I never shot less then 80% of score at the PALMA matches with a tuned 14/M1A, that was the Any rifle/Iron Sights part. (Palma Matches are at 1000 yards, standard Hi Power matches were 200 400 and 600 yards). Still got my score books. While I've shot Hi Power for many years, it took the training of an ExMarine Sniper to shape me up and get me good. I had the black and blue spots to prove it, he was OLD SCHOOL! (Semper Fi Don). Still have my stuff except my eyes aren't quite what they used to be, but last time I was up at the range, I supprised a lot of young shooter that didn't understand distance shooting and of course.. they knew better! Chuckle.. Had the strangest prone rthym most people ever saw.. I only had X amount of time to get the shot off before I'd have to roll out of position and rest me eyes... then go back into position.. so I developed my LD rthym and it worked

I also had a great time taking people up for some auto fun during the years I had my class III. I've still seen some of the piles of brass that were left years ago... We took up everything from MaDuece to Mini UZi's (what a silly weapon), kept a ParaFal in my car, just in case and it did have the switch.

Professionally I worked in the arms industry off and on until the 80's both commercially and for the Gov't.. I don't care about discusions the commercial side of the industry, but no.. I don't talk much about the other, except in really vague terms. These were the days when we were beseaching Colt to start modifying the 70 series... of what a waste of time. Then there was the supperb Stainless .45 that came out about that time and the folks that were making it came out to the IPSC matches all the time! To bad they were underfunded... sigh..

In the late 70's got interested with computers, and in the 80s Fidonet started up, by 1985 I had started the discussion areas for technical Firearms discussions and the RTKBA echo for politics. That ran until the late 90's when the Internet had pretty much taken over... but it's never stopped me from getting off my duff and getting out to take the battle to the people... The Shooting community cannot afford coach potatoes, not anymore!

Still love a good pistol and a fine rifle, be it a 14 or a Garand of a pre 70 Winchester... or even my friend's Ruger International in .243 (best darn little bush rifle I've ever used, really handy and nice balance).

Most of all, I'm deeply concerned that most of the shooting community does not see how badly we're loosing our ability to keep firearms and does nothing about it, and that if they don't do something about it SOON, there will be almost no more shooting community by the year 2020/2030. Because there will be no more 2nd.

Also how in the heck do you get rid of the darn wink at the top??

"There's room for gun tot'n hippies and pistol pack'n conservatives"

Hey when I got back from overseas in the early 70's.. by 72 my hair was down to my A**... there were some darn good reasons for that in those days and there was NO AIDS! (AMEN!) ;)

I like writing my thoughts and I like guns. BadaBing BadaBoom... I'm here. I'm a conscious gun owner meaning i only have two hands and only need two pistols.

Hi All!

I am Marti Oakley, columnist for the St Cloud Times in Minnesota. I was recently on Cam's show on Sirius regarding my column about the UN Gun Debate.

So what is my interest in guns? Purely the protection of the 2nd Amendment. I don't own a gun and never have. My sons and grandson hunt and enjoy it and it has been a tradition and activity that they look forward to each season. Here in Minnesota, hunting is a huge thing.

I am working on showing the UN gun Debate to sportsman's clubs and any other individuals interested in seeing it. I am also trying to compile a list of legislation that attempts to directly repeal the 2nd, and any covert attempts to use the UN treaties and agreements to ban our right to keep and bear. So if anyone comes up on anything suspicious......send it along.

If I could have one wish......it would be to debate that obnoxious Peters' woman and send her packing with her demands that we give up our rights.

Another new member here. Been a shooter for 30+ years. I just turned 39. I've owned a few different things over the years, but right now I only have a Colt Peacemaker .22 that was a gift from my wife's uncle. I've got the itch for a .45ACP at the moment. There are probably a lot more less exciting things about me than that.

Hi, I just registered minutes ago.

I just got into shooting this past year and I currently own an 870 Express, and Marlin 81 Bolt Action .22 and my new RIA 1911 is on its way soon.

Lamb of Gun, sounds as if you are well on your way.

yardism, Marti O, fattsgalore, and the rest...

You have the right mind frame.... enjoy and welcome to THR.

Hello to all,

Just registered a few days ago. I have been an avid reader of this and a few other select sites, and I have joined those that seemed to be professionally run and frequented by knowledgeable and friendly folks. I don't have a lot of answers, but I've got some good questions and I hope, some good ideas.

I am a professional photographer, but my favorite job has been as a dad.

Looking forward to contributing.

Moonshot

I've heard a good photographer can make a hard used gun look like a piece of art......got any examples?
