Bloomberg has gotten four Fed. Reps to sign on to introduce legislation for the Mayors Against Guns group . . .

Mayors Urge Crackdown on Illegal Guns; Resistance Emerges
By SEWELL CHAN and ANDREW JACOBS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 — Mayors from some of the nation’s largest cities gathered here today to urge Congress to crack down on the sale of illegal firearms. But their expanding coalition, led by Mayors Michael R. Bloomberg of New York and Thomas M. Menino of Boston, has begun to encounter resistance among some advocates for gun owners.

The coalition of mayors announced the creation of a bipartisan task force of four House members that will try to introduce legislation in the new Congress cracking down on illegal guns. The mayors also unveiled new poll results showing that most Americans support stricter gun laws.

The daylong meeting of the coalition, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, was the biggest event so far in an effort that began last April with a meeting of about 15 mayors at Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. More than 120 mayors have since joined the coalition; about 40 attended the meeting today, including the mayors of Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Washington, Minneapolis, Hartford and Newark.

Mr. Menino said he hoped the gathering, at the Cannon House Office Building, would send a message. “Illegal guns are a national problem that demands a national response,” he said, adding, “We are only as strong as each of our members.”

But there were signs of emerging opposition to the mayors’ effort. The New York Sun reported last week that Jared Fuhriman, the mayor of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was the first and so far only mayor to drop out of the coalition, saying he thought the coalition was going too far. The coalition now includes mayors from 46 states and the District of Columbia. (Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wyoming are not represented.)

Several pro-gun groups planned to hold a news conference at 1:30 p.m. at the Capital Hilton downtown to criticize the coalition’s efforts. In a news release, they called Mr. Bloomberg “the Manhattan gun grabber” and questioned the propriety of his use of undercover sting operations and civil litigation to crack down on gun dealers. The National Rifle Association has been sharply critical of Mayor Bloomberg.

Members of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns insisted that they respected the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Mr. Bloomberg said he was not trying to curb existing gun rights. “That’s ideological nonsense and we’ve just got to move past it,” he said. “Respecting the rights of gun owners while cracking down on illegal guns are completely compatible goals and we are committed to both.”

The creation of the task force might signal that the issue of illegal guns is gaining traction in Congress — though with the war in Iraq, climate change and other looming issues, it might be difficult for guns to become a priority.

The two Democrats on the task force are Representatives Charles B. Rangel of New York, the new chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and John Conyers Jr. of Michigan, the new chairman of the Judiciary Committee. The Republicans on the task force are Representatives Peter T. King of New York, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, and Mark S. Kirk of Illinois.

The task force will focus on eliminating the Tiahrt amendment, a controversial provision that has blocked cities from gaining access to, and using, gun-trace data collected by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The task force says it will also “work to enact common sense measures” to stem the flow of illegal guns, officials said.

The new survey announced by the mayors involved 803 adults from Jan. 10 to 15 by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, a Democratic polling firm, and the Tarrance Group, a Republican firm. The survey found that 56 percent of respondents said they favored stricter gun laws. The margin of error was about 3.5 percent, plus or minus.

Wiping the Dem fingerprints

Ahh, a bi-partisan committee to recommend legislation on "illegal" guns. I feel so much better now.

I guess that way it's not really the Demcorat's taking guns, it's bi-partisan.

With "republicans" like Bloomberg we can all sleep better at night knowing our 2nd amendment rights are protected by a bi-partisan committee.

The task force says it will also “work to enact common sense measures”
Okay, I hearby volunteer myself to this committee of Mayors to act as the common sense gauge for said proposed measures.. I don't know a single person more qualified than myself because I see myself as the person that has the most common sense... Who are these people kidding anyhow?

I may be nitpicking, but does this math add up or not?

"The coalition now includes mayors from 46 states and the District of Columbia. (Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wyoming are not represented.)"

46 + 6 = 52? Hmmm.

I guess it doesn't matter, 44 or 46, since most states have mayors that are evidently not too RKBA friendly.

Edit: Oh, and does the phrase "common sense gun laws" irritate anybody else as much as it does me?

Go to the source...

How about cracking down on the lazy judges who in spite of having the sentencing leeway, frequently do not enforce the current laws regarding crimes involving illegally acquired firearms? We need more gun laws like Rosie O'Donnel needs more hair on her lip:fire:

I DON'T BELIEVE IN SUCH THINGS AS...

ILLEGAL GUNS DAMNE IT!!!

How about illegal cars, knifes, spoons, oh oh i know, illegal TVs (too many anit propaganda channels). Jesus Christ!!! It's a tool!!!

The whole concept of an illegal gun is sick. If those morons would start putting evil criminals to jail to rott for years, illegal guns would never come up.

Amazingly enough the number one source of crime guns confiscated in NYC according to trace data Is John Jovino Gun shop in NYC!!
Surprising because unless you are a LEO or have a NYC permit they will not even allow you in the door to look. The shops is staffed by current and retired NYC LEOs and owned by the current owner of the Henry repeating rifle comapny also located in NYC.

Bollomberg really does have an agenda to disarm all of us, he knows that just because guns are traced to a shop does not mean the shop is selling guns to criminals.

They can introduce all the crap they want.

IT WON'T PASS.

Conyers and Rangel will hold hearings and probably force it out of committee but that is it.

If the Dems are smart, they would drop this.

Bloomberg used to be a Democrat until he ran for mayor.

This was an NRA priority to enact into law and the NRA will be fighting for this.

I for one suggest we all get our reps to back keeping the TIAHRT AMENDMENT law.

:cuss:

The Dems may or may not be smart, but gun control is like the itch they always need to scratch. They're going to come back to it, though it probably won't be until after 2008 when they can work with a RINO or D pres. without fear of a backlash.

Regarding the Tiarhart Amendment

IT WON'T PASS.

I wouldn't bet on it.

It was passed as a line in an appropriations bill, and will be killed in the same way, given that the Chairman of the Ways and Means Cttee (which writes appropriations bills) is Charlie Rangel (D-NY) mentioned in that article as one of Bloomburg's point men.

And since rabid gun hater Louise Slaughter (D-CA) is Chairwoman of the House Rules Cttee you might even see rules promulgated for the relevant bill that prevent any amendments being made to the bill on the floor of the house to strip it out.

They wouldn't do something so brutal for a major Bill (like an AWB), but for something like this, that could be slipped through they might very well.

I can definitely say that any mayor in NH who signed on to that would smacked out of office so fast and hard that they could file a claim for whiplash.

I am sure when you call people and say: " Do you support harsher penalties for illegal guns?" Give them 20 questions of a similar nature, and if they answer yes to one you mark them as a supporter you can make a poll say whatever you want. The real key is what they decide to define as 'illegal'.
Sheeple make me sad :(

Suddenly simply having a mayor from a city of an entire state in a politicly organized group is being used to imply to congress a shared view of the entire state from which the mayor comes from.
Talk about deceptive. I thought the job of the politicians in washington was to represent the people, not create groups that supposedly represent the people instead...and then appear to just be implementing thier suggestions.
When people resort to such deception and sidestep the process for representation you really have to wonder what is so ridiculous that they are scheming to come up with that they feel the need to do that. I know it cannot be good.

The cook county assault weapons ban referendum from 2006:
For the health and safety of children and the entire community, shall the State of Illinois enact a comprehensive ban on the manufacture, sale, delivery and possession of military-style assault weapons and .50 caliber rifles?

Great, my mayors on the list. Idiot. Time to get his attention.
