How much ammo do you keep stocked up?

I'm doing the 2 boxes of ammo per wal-mart visit .. I am hoping that that will build over time if I can just stop shooting my backup!!!:banghead:

and not for the record

i was kidding

:D

and madmike I wasn't mocking you, jus' so you know. My favorite show EVER made, very formative on my young mind;

V

not for vendetta. . .

but VISITOR

although I do take the story to be more of an anaolgy/moral about societal division, propoganda, and manipulation. Later in life I heard it was built around the Nazi takeover of Germany or something. Few people remember it, it seems. . . .

Seriously. While zombies are unlikely, the threat of alien invasion HAS been professionally discussed by the government and various think tanks.

If it ever happens, we do have plans.

If we're successful, you can thank the SF community, most of whom own guns (even card-carrying Commies like Eric Flint and Steven Brust), for making the issue believable to the masses, and enough PhDs aware of the subject to hold fora and do research.

Sorry, not to get off of the subject, but while all of these are good points, if aliens did invade us, we would have about zero chance to defeat them. C'mon, think of the technology they'd have against us.

If aliens did invade us the outcome would depend on several factors. If the technological gap was sufficient they could defeat us with minimal forces. If the technological gap was not to large and they did not bring a sufficient sized force we could prevail, at a large cost perhaps but we could win. Or
our combat efforts could be overshadowed by biological effects as in a "war of the worlds" scenario.

However if an alien race were to make contact with humans history shows us that the likely loser of said episode will be us..... the technologically inferior society.

But if you need zombies and aliens as an excuse to patronize the ammunition manufacturing industry far be it from me to try and stop you. Buy to your hearts content, I do and I don't even pretend to need a reason.

This depends on a mistaken belief that ray weapons will ever be practical in man-portable size, which is almost impossible. Note that we haven't substantially improved firearm mechanisms in close to a century.

It also depends, at greater than the infantry level, what the aliens' strategy is, their logistical base, their morals and reason for attempting conquest, and in some part, their numbers.

To assume any battle is unwinnable is to pre-emptively lose.

To the OP: That information is available on a need to know basis only. And you do not need to know. ;)

Re. Alien Invasion: I don't think it'd be insurmountable at all. Any civilization sufficiently advanced to have mastered the conversion of matter into energy and vice versa would have little need for our planet or anything we have to offer. The only, IMHO plausible threat would be civilizations that while somewhat more advanced at least logisticly (technologicly, we do have the technological ability to build a sublight starship, but the cost would exceed the combined global GDP for a decade) more advanced, are relatively close to our technological level. Nevermind that technological development has no set rules. They could be far more advanced in energy systems or aerospace technology, but they could be less advanced than ourselves regarding information technology or in biology or genetics. Or they could use tactics similar to our own 100 years ago. In their culture concepts like chivalry may not have gone out of fashion. This will effect their mindset regarding tactics and technological development. Larry Niven put it best,

"The problem with aliens is that they're so... alien."

How much ammo do you keep stocked up?

Enough to satisfy myself that I wont run out soon, but not so much that it hurts my finances. It's enough to live on (hunting/defense) for the rest of my life if I was thrifty, but little enough that it's worth less than a paycheck.

Let's see....

I have about 1,000 rounds of 9mm
250 rounds of 45 ACP
2000 rounds of .223
250 rounds of 00 Buck
100 12 slugs

and 2 really big sticks!!!

(technologicly, we do have the technological ability to build a sublight starship, but the cost would exceed the combined global GDP for a decade)

An Orion type mission to Barnard's Star could be built and launched for about $100 billion. It would arrive in 50 years.

The only problem is getting someone to cough up the capital. Oh, the whines from ecosimps about the nuclear engines in space.

But yes, there are a number of explored alien motivations. It would not have been impossible for the Maori, for example, to beat the European settlers. The Afghans proved impossible with sub-par weapons and good terrain, for the Brits.

It's one of those scenarios that's very hard to calculate odds on, though it's probably unlikely, but as with any scenario involving breakdown of order, you need to have several years of food, ammo, medical supplies, tools, etc on hand.

A massive systematic breakdown of order is pretty scary. New Orleans just went away and fast and there was a substantial breakdown in local governance that made it worse.

I do not believe what classic survivalist believe I want to preserve local infrastructure and governance as much as possible. "Community survivalist" would be a acceptable to me.

I can't carry all the crap I need and I can't afford to shove money in the form of supplies in a hole in the ground somewhere else. I can however get a couple generators and have basic supplies and support local disaster prepairedness.

1400+ 30/06 of various types:D all on clips
2500+ 223 with 1000 in mags and 900 on strippers
400+ 7.62x54
600+ 40s&w
for all of my main guns.

I have 1500 more 223 to reload. 2000 pieces of 30/06 brass on the way with about 1400 tips already. I think it is hilarious when someone buys an ak or ar for shtf and several thousand rounds when they only have a few mags. Tell the bad guys to wait while you reload your mags. :banghead: I have about 35 ar mags and 300 en blocs. My supply will grow faster than it is reduced.

I think I'll just have to deal with the Aliens when they arrive. We already have a lot of aliens here in the US and they are flesh and blood, same as me.

I do not believe what classic survivalist believe I want to preserve local infrastructure and governance as much as possible. "Community survivalist" would be a acceptable to me.

That also matches my general philosophy on the issue. I don't want to imagine a bunch of city dwelllers who have no woods craft running around the woods carrying AR's and SKS's like a bunch of lunatics trying to survive off the land. They would be better off planting a large garden.

A single bullet would conquer France!!! They'd all be running around behind each other so that they wouldn't be the first one hit by the bullet.

Yes, France has a very impressive military history. Just not recently. They pretty much stunk up the place in the 20th Century. Prior to the 20th Century, very impressive indeed.

Most localities (or states) have limits on how much gas you can store in your garage in cans. Many people might well be shocked to learn they are in violation of the gas laws.

If your storage container is over 55 gallons, the EPA requires that you have a spill prevention plan made up and certified by an engineer as to the emergency measures to be taken in the event of a spill, as well as the steps required to get within full compliance in terms of secondary containment and security. I believe this applies to all petrolium and vegetable oils and derived fuels. I'm not sure if or how it applies to stored vehicles and moveable tanks - I think it's different depending on the class of vehicle, etc. but it's been a while. This is nation-wide.

Of course, you can stockpile 50-gallon drums of whatever fuel you want and not have to deal with this regulatory nightmare - I believe. Then you've just got to have the drums denoted in an emergency plan and have enough secondary containment to deal with a certain number of the drums breaking. Still a headache. But drums are easier to hide, too. :)

As for ammo - not nearly enough. Only maybe 1.5k total, not counting .22LR (which is a commodity, afterall). It's prohibitively expensive right now. I'd have to stop eating for a while, and then some.
