supposed mystery weapon (small pic)

Haha, it has got to be a decoy/prop. The rifle scope is kind of the dead giveaway.

We have seen much sillier things from insurgents.

The buttstock/grip looks made of wood, painted but with wear on the edges. The scope is a cheap 3x9 or similar with typical sporting style rings. The mount looks like 3 pieces of metal welded together. The tube is probably metal (artillery shell or similar?) with another smaller tube inserted in the front.

The shadow at the bottom looks like it has a carrying handle such as on a light machine gun of some type.

Maybe a homemade rocket launcher or training/decoy weapon.

I see the weapon...

... but where is the mystery? an underfunded group of fellahin (that's Iraqi for "rednecks") could reasonably be expected to start making wepons themselves. Unless this is Action Man's gun, it something someone made theirself. Probably said "hey dudes, watch this" in Persian or Arabic before he fired it too. Me and my brothers and cousins made something like that once, we put black powder and rocks in it (ours wasn't shoulder fired, though). We were inspired to this act by an older pair of cousins who had done the same thing a generation or so before (one of them went on to become an engineer, the other one to operate an antiaircraft gun).

If I were going to take down a helicopter with one of those (and I'm not saying I will), I might consider putting some heavy gauge chain down the muzzle as a projectile. If it's a muzzleloader and not a recoilless job (you can make yr own rocket fuel with fertilizer and charcoal). Yeah, a barret .50 caliber might be better for the job, but they cost more than a fellah might make in several years.

The President has now identified it as a weapon of mass destruction. "It was hard work...but we found it" announced President Bush today. Sorry, couldn't resist.

truly amazing

that a former special forces guy working as a reporter in iraq describes it as part of a weapons cache and all the troops in camp living room chime in its a fake. special

whoever said potato cannon is correct. i made a potato cannon for a science fair project, also notice that there is no trigger...

C'daddy

If he could not tell what it was when he had it in his hands he's one dumb SF guy. We are looking at a picture. I bet 50% of the viewers here would give you a correct opinion if they had it in their hands for 15 seconds.

HMMMMM

I would have to pass the motion of a spud launcher, and also would have to strongly agree with the RPG on bottom.

whats this wold comming to,like nukes werent enough .now we have to resort to potato warfare!:banghead:

Is it? Or is it truly amazing to believe that the imbedded reporter/SF guy is a human and thus not infallible?

Edit: REDACTED after looking closer at the Cody Picture

Though the idea of a mystery weapon responsible for shooting down US helicopters lends itself nicely to our upcoming action against Iran.

They have already banned it in California! They aren't taking any chances. HMMM wonder if it works on CNN helicopters.

It has a trigger, but it is obviously homemade, it's not even a decent fake, it could be some kind of decoy, but it's not a weapon. One suggestion is that it might be a prop to appear in a terrorist video, looking at it, and the crude way it is made, that's a good possibility.
