Building an AR

yup

It's far cheaper to build one than to buy a name-brand one preassembled.

Lower parts kits are roughly $60-$80, stripped lower receivers can be had for $100.

After you have the lower receiver assembled, you can pick up an upper receiver from lots of places.

etc

I put mine together with a model 1 sales kit, and an RRA NM 2-stage lpk.

And it was easy :)

I know someone that wanted to see what he could come up with if he had to go on the cheap. It turned out to be a nice little light-weight carbine and a little less than $700.

If you wanna same $$, build it yourself ;)

The first thing I will say is steer clear of Model 1, their quality (or lack thereof) is not what it should be... but that's why they are so cheap.

Now, if you want to build a high quality AR, you can definitely do it cheaper. You can build Colt quality AR's for RRA prices.

The easiest way for most people, and the best bang for the buck would be to buy a complete lower and a complete Stag upper. You can do that for about $750 and they rival quality of some of the rifles going for $1k.
