Is it possible to get a "standard" M14/M1A for around $1300?

Hi,
Fulton Armory wants a LOT for theirs... $2,000 for the base model. They seem to feel theirs is the only "genuine" M14. I don't know the reasons why; I'm sure some of you do. Fulton also seems to make a huge deal about some M1 receivers being cast, but if I understand their site correctly, their M14 receivers are cast. I don't know if that matters.

So are there any other builders I should look at besides Springfield INC and Fulton? Polytech is from China, right? Any others?

Basically I'm looking for an as-new or near-new M14/M1A, wood stock, standard-length barrel, for informal shooting, handling, field-stripping, drilling, and general coolness/nostalgia. My FIL trained with one in the army and I want to get him something. He'll probably not shoot it more than once or twice a year max, just plinking. I hear chrome-lined barrels are preferable.

So is that a possibility?

Fultion is marketing to a specific type of customer that wants as close to GI as possible in fit, finish, markings; that kind of stuff.

Not for a casual shooter for sure. If you want "genuine" Fulton is your only choice. There are other makers that can do the work as well as Fulton but they can't ship a rifle in under 12 months so they don't matter in my opinion.

Springfield is the way to go in your price range.

I would shorten that to read "Fulton is marketing."

As the owner of a couple of Fulton rifles, I wouldn't.

They make a quality product.

If you have first hand information to the contrary please speak because I'd love to hear it, otherwise, well...... no offense :D

Springfield Standard of loaded should come in @ $1,500 or less where ever you are

If you have a Sportsmans WHse....

If there is a Sportsmans Wherehouse nearby, I saw them at mine here in NM for under $1200.00 for a standard model. Nice, Like to have one.

I've never heard anything bad about their performance. But they are spendy, and they market aggressively.

But they are spendy, and they market aggressively.

Well they are also the only manufacturer that can actually deliver products too, which is a real shame.

I'd be spendy if I was the only supplier of a product.

Their competition in that market can't ship a rifle in under 12-18 months even if you stand there holding hundred dollar bills in your hand and beg (I know, I tried).

Springfield is the way to go for sure outside of that collector market.

One of these days I want to get a Springfield M1A. Probably the "Loaded" version, with Walnut stock and stainless steel barrel. That would be one sweet looking rifle.

LRB is closer to genuine, Fulton uses a cast Armscorp reciever.
I just last week bought another standard Springfield and the only non USGI part is the reciever. All other parts are genuine.

Fulton may be real nice, I have never shot one, but a SA inc is just as good and so is LRB. I have owned 6 SA inc all standards with USGI barrels and never had a hiccup with any. You may hear more complaints about SA inc but thats because they have made 20 times as many as Fulton.

My beef with fulton is they bash others to sell their product. Again there's may be top of the line, but don't make up stuff about others to get there.

I, for my money, would not spend the $$ on a NM barrel on an M1a, unless I were to become a competition shooter or a bench shooter.

The National Match improvements on the M1a will not be noticed by a normal shooter, using the rifle in the field out to 500-600 yards. If you are a serious competition shooter, you would not be getting an Springfield anyway, you would put your $$ into an LBR or Fulton and pay the long dollar. If your goal is to put holes in paper as close as you can from a bench, you will find a bolt gun more satisfying and cheaper to get into. The Standard M1a should be a 2 moa platform, with a good shooter and surplus ammo, you should be under 4 moa, that will get you on a 20 inch target out to 500-600 yards. Beyond that range, other factors such as range and wind estimation and correction will have a bigger effect on bullet path than the accuracy of the rifle/shooter. Spending the extra $$ to tweek a small amount of accuracy from a rifle is not going to increase your range of shooting, only slightly tighten your groups out to 500 yards. 1/2 moa improvement on the rifle, would mean 1/2 inch smaller group at 100 yards and 2 1/2 inch smaller group at 500 yards, not that much considering that at 500 yards a 4 moa group would be 20 inchs, and 3.5 moa would be 17.5 inch, 3 moa is 15 moa. At 100 you are at 4 moa=4 inches, 3.5 moa= 3.5 inches, 3 moa is =3 inches. All seems basic to some, but putting the numbers next to each other, illustrates that the improvements in the rifle are minor in over all, and seldom worth the $$, IMHO. Sorry for the long post:p By the way, the NM front sights are worth the $$ of @ $25-30, but not the rear.

LRB makes a fantastic rifle.

You just can't have one before 2009......... maybe :(

SA makes a "mass produced" rifle and uses more cast parts than the others; not necessarily a bad thing there either.

The owner of Fulton has, shall we say, some opinions on things but makes a good product :)

That said, they offer a 12,000 round warantee on their rifles, and that speaks louder in my mind.

It's a limited market with a VERY limited list of suppliers.

I bought my std M1A a few years ago for $1100 (after fees & tax) and couldn't be happier and just recently the owner of the shop I frequent bought guns from an estate that translated in a LNIB M1A that they sold for $1000...so the deals are out there, just be patient & diligent!
