From Joe Waldron's GOAL Post:

GOAL Alert 5-2007 5 April 2007

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

In a last desperate attempt to pass SB 5197, the alleged “gun show loophole” bill, and at the urging of the Seattle gun control crowd, the Senate has opened the telephone and e-mail “tree” to calls asking that the bill be pulled to the Senate floor for a vote. Senators are already receiving calls and e-mails demanding a full Senate vote be taken on SB 5197.

This kind of last-minute chicanery is similar to the trickery used last year, when Washington Ceasefire was given advance notice that a hearing was to be held on the gun show bill, while full public disclosure was delayed for two additional days (and after the weekly schedule had been published).

SB 5197 died in Senate Rules because there was not sufficient support to bring the bill up for a floor vote. Washington Ceasefire and its cronies in the Senate won’t take “no” for an answer. They want to ram the bill through at any cost. As has happened with previous gun control legislation, the bill’s supporters and possibly Democrat leadership will put pressure on rural and swing district Democrats to support a Senate floor vote on SB 5197.

THIS CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

A SMALL NUMBER OF EXTREMIST GUN CONTROL PROPONENTS IS BEHIND THIS. THEY DO NOT REMOTELY REPRESENT A MAJORITY OF VOTERS IN THIS STATE.

TWO SEPARATE U.S. GOVERNMENT STUDIES SHOW GUN SHOWS ARE NOT A SOURCE OF GUNS FOR CRIMINALS. IN THE LATEST FBI STUDY, NOT A SINGLE FIREARM INVOLVED IN THE STUDY CAME FROM A GUN SHOW.

THE SO-CALLED “GUN SHOW LOOPHOLE” IS A SOLUTION TO A NON-EXISTENT PROBLEM. IT WILL ACTUALLY KILL GUN SHOWS AND SILENCE OUR POLITICAL VOICE.

SEATTLE ALLOWS ILLEGAL ALIENS TO ROAM ITS STREETS AT WILL, KILLING PEOPLE. THE LAST THREE POLICE OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN EASTERN WASHINGTON WERE KILLED BY ILLEGAL ALIENS. BUT THE SEATTLE GUN BAN GANG WANTS TO BLAME LAW-ABIDING GUN OWNERS? FOCUS ON THE REAL PROBLEMS, NOT MEANINGLESS SYMBOLISM.

Democrat OR REPUBLICAN, PRO- OR ANTI-GUN, THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU IMEDIATELY. SB 5197 MUST BE KILLED NOW!

I have already emailed my Senator, as has my husband. We will be calling in the morning.

Please, if you've done nothing else to oppose this one, CALL or WRITE or BOTH. Do it now, don't put it off.

Mar 21 Senate Rules "X" file

Does anyone know what the X file is? I googled it but, with the x-files TV show any information I might find is buried in 1.18 million hits. I also tried the search at access.wa.gov and didn't really find anything. I would like to sound a bit more aware when I call.

"X" files

means it's in a suspended state. A bill that fails to pass out of committee or Rules is put in "X" status, meaning under normal circumstances it's dead for the session. At the end of the session, it goes back to it's original policy committee.

But as noted in the GOAL Post, it ain't over til it's over. A bill can be pulled from either committee or Rules and sent directly to the chamber (House or Senate) floor. That's what they're trying to do here. Later information indicates the Brady Campaign contacted it's members in Washington, asking them to ask their Senators to vote for a pull to the Senate floor.

And we need to contact more than just Republican Senators. They only have 1/3 of the seats in the Senate. We need righteous Democrats in on this as well:

Jean Berkey (D-38)
[email protected]

Jim Hargrove (D-24)
[email protected]

Brian Hatfield (D-19)
[email protected]

Derek Kilmer (D-26)
[email protected]

Chris Marr (D-6)
[email protected]

Eric Oemig (D-45)
[email protected]

Craig Pridemore (D-49)
[email protected]

Marilyn Rasmussen (D-2)
[email protected]

Tim Sheldon (D-24)
[email protected]

And it doesn't hurt to e-mail Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown at
[email protected]

Senator _____:

I understand that the Brady Campaign has been trying to get SB 5197 brought to the floor for a vote. I am requesting that you vote AGAINST this bill. This bill would wrongly force private citizens to enforce federal gun laws, even though we are not paid, trained, or authorized to enforce such laws.

On the other hand, I request that you sponsor legislation to close the drunk driving "loophole" that cost Rebecca Griego her life when she was gunned down by Jonathan Rowan, who was living in the country illegally for many years. When he was arrested by Seattle police they did not check his residency status because of Seattle's "Sanctuary" law.

You can learn more about the drunk driving loophole at the following URLs:

Dear Willington Family,
I want to take a moment to thank-you for your e-mail, The Senator asked me to tell you he understands your concern and the level of importance. The bill has died, we don't think it will be readdressed for the rest of the session. With the majority party in control in Olympia, we can't anticipate what will happen, but it looks good. Thanks again for writing.

Penny McWain
Session Aide to
Senator Mark Schoesler

Dear Willington Family,

Thank you for writing me about Substitute Senate Bill 5197. I appreciate your input.

I want you to know I oppose SSB 5197, and that I will continue to fight it should it be pulled to the Senate floor. I agree with many of your assessments, and I am glad to know I have your support.

Again, than you for taking time to write me. Please feel free to contact me whenever you encounter a problem or issue with which I can assist.

Best Regards,

Dan Swecker
Washington State Senator
(360) 786-7638

Mr. Willington,

Since this bill is in the Senate, I do not know of any attempt to bring
this bill to the floor.

With that said, I am a strong supporter of 2nd amendment rights and I am
opposed to any legislation that may interfere with those rights. If this
bill somehow does get out of the Senate and comes to us in the House of
Representatives, we will certainly do what we can to stop this bill in
the House.

CARY CONDOTTA
12th District Representative

Dear Mr. Willington:

I agree with you and totally oppose this bill.

Thank you for your message.

Cordially yours,

BOB MORTON
State Senator

I fired off a group mail to the Republicans...

I just got a call

from one of Majority Leader Lisa Brown's aides. He assures me (in the Senator's words) the bill is dead for the year and will NOT be pulled to the floor.

My thanks to all of you who have written or called your senators. Grassroots pressure rules!

JW

Not surprisingly, I received no response from either Ms. Brown, nor my Senator, Ms. Prentice.

What was that line about taxation and representation??? :scrutiny:
