Blacksburg, VA – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the Virginia Tech University community, and to the families of the victims of what appears to be one of the worst mass shootings in American history.

"Details are still forthcoming about what motivated the shooter in this case to act, and how he was able to arm himself. It is well known, however, how easy it is for an individual to get powerful weapons in our country.

"Eight years ago this week, the young people in Littleton, Colorado suffered a horrible attack at Columbine High School, and almost exactly six months ago, five young people were killed at an Amish schoolhouse in Pennsylvania. Since these killings, we've done nothing as a country to end gun violence in our schools and communities. If anything, we've made it easier to access powerful weapons.

"We have now seen another horrible tragedy that will never be forgotten. It is long overdue for us to take some common-sense actions to prevent tragedies like this from continuing to occur."

As the nation's largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Brady Campaign, working with its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters, is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in our communities.

"I really believe this is the end of the RKBA in the US."

My personal opinion is that this may strengthen RKBA.

This is the e-mail I sent to Fox News:

No one knows how this will end up…a student…a terrorist? All is nothing more then speculation at this point…

One thing I find quite ironic is the fact that a bill to allow Concealed Carry (HB1572) was not allowed out of committee (around Jan 31st) . One person with a concealed handgun could have stopped this tragedy before it went too far…one person could have saved the majority of those students and faculty members.

Fox is reporting (speculating, actually) that 2 Glock handguns were used. Again, this hasn’t been confirmed. However, as an owner of Glock handguns (9 mm Model 17 and Model 19), I can state that although one can fire quickly, unless that person is a marksman of exceptional skill, they are not going to be too accurate.

These students died because they could not defend themselves. “Gun Free” zones (around schools) are killing zones if a maniac or determined terrorist is the only one with the means to kill.

I am sure we’ll hear a lot about guns killing people. Guns don’t kill people by themselves…some one has to pull that trigger. But that same gun could have reduced the scope of this tragedy.

One thing that really bothers me…as I wrote, this murderer took time to shoot…it wasn’t over in 5 seconds. Why didn’t any one try to put this killer down? Are we as a nation, so sheep like we would wait our turn to die?

Fox News e-mail address is: [email protected].

I suggest you send your thoughts concerning this tragedy to Fox, CNN and anyone else (local newspaper, for example).

We do need to contact our federal reps and senators

I'll tell you. I have officially changed my view regarding educators in schools having firearms. This crap could not happen if educators and administrators were in possession of a firearm, and if they were highly trained in their use.

I still stand by my previous statement of deputising these educators. If we change any law, let it be that we deputise at least 2 or 3 educators in every building and pay for their training.

The two handgun thing is verified. People are saying Glock 17s only because that is all that the "experts" on the news choose to refer to.

Verified by whom? From the reports I'm reading, nobody can verify bupkus. There's not even a name for the shooter yet. Here's the two gun origin:

NBC’s Pete Williams said two law enforcement officials told him the gunman killed himself. They also said the gunman used two 9-mm handguns during the rampage, Williams reported. He said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was trying to track the weapons.

So Pete Williams talked to two unnamed LEO's, out of literally HUNDREDS swarming that place now, and that's supposed to be the end of it. I think it's way too early to start coming to any conclusions about this.

CNN interviewing students that were there, saying " I am sure students are on the phone, email, and internet, taking about what happened today, what are they saying?"

Would be nice if a few of us could find out where trhe students are talking online and get their opinion on wheter or not a CCW student could have prevented this?

Just maybe one of these students would/ could be on national news, and could pose this same thought!

This is truly sad and I am only thinking about the loss of these defenseless college kids.

I can only imagine what this is going to mean for the 2A.

What I don't understand is this. The first shootings took place at 7:15 in a dorm. The next wave of shootings didn't take place until 9AM, in an academic bldg. What the hell were the police and college admin. doing in the mean time? Why wasn't the campus locked down? Most of the casualties were from the second wave of shootings.

I posted this in an earlier post. It started as a domestic dispute in West AJ dorm. An RA was shot when he tried to intervene. By the time the cops arrived, the gunman had run off. They began searching the campus immediately, but had no reason to believe it was anything other than an isolated domestic incident. There was nothing to indicate that it was going to turn into a mass casualty, suicide by cop situation. There's only so much that a small number of cops can do on a campus that's bigger than many small towns.

Folks, if we sit by and do nothing the media and anti's will be all over it before we can respond.

I've already sent letters to State and Fed Reps as per below.

I would urge you to do the same.

Dear XXXX,

If you truly understand Gun Control you know that criminalizing law abiding citizens who happen to be Pro Second Amendment makes no sense. Study after study by the CDC and FBI has shown that additional gun control will do nothing to reduce crime rates and in fact will only make it more dangerous for law abiding citizens once criminals know that their victims are unarmed.

Unfortunately we are all watching a tragedy unfold on the TV today. By that I am referring to the Virginia Tech Shootings.

One of our Maryland State Senators this year was quoted on TV making a statement that he just didn't understand WHY the average citizen needed a handgun permit....XXXXXX, Had JUST ONE PERSON had a concealed handgun on the Virginia Tech Campus today then this entire event could have been avoided.

We will likely hear politicians blame the firearm instead of the Criminal but many of you know that this tragedy could have been performed just as easily with a car/truck in a pedestrian intersection or sidewalk but it just happened to occur with a firearm.

Gun-free zones may be well-intentioned, but good intentions are not enough. It is an understandable desire to ban guns; after all, if you ban guns from an area, people can’t get shot, right? But time after time when these public shootings occur, they disproportionately take place in gun-free zones.

It is the law-abiding good citizens who would only use a gun for protection who obey these bans. Violating a gun-free zone at a place such as a public university may mean expulsion or firing and arrest, real penalties for law-abiding citizens. But for someone intent on killing others, adding on these penalties for violating a gun-free zone means little to someone who, if still alive, faces life in prison.

Unfortunately, instead of gun-free zones ensuring safety for victims, ensuring that the victims are unarmed only makes things safer for attackers.

When are folks going to start addressing the underlying issues and problems in society and stop penalizing the law abiding citizens who are looking for nothing more that the ability to protect themselves from Criminals!

Criminals don't pay attention to laws.....I know that SOME of you get that but too many of our elected leaders just don't get it! They think that heaping more laws on and further restricting the rights of law abiding citizens is going to improve the situation but the reality is that it doesn't and it won't.

Focus on the Criminal Problem not the inanimate objects.

Lets focus on Criminal Control not Gun Control.

Thank you for your time.

before i say this, i admit i have no clue what truly happened. but if they were really lined up and shot execution style. i dont know how that line could ever be maintained. who would stay in line when they realized they were gonna get shot no matter what? its one guy with handguns.

Any reports that it WAS a Glock? All these LEOs are talking about how easy it is to carry two Glock 17s and 'spare clips' in a fanny pack.

Cosmoline, it's a St. Valentine's Day Massacre sort of event. Nobody but the shooter is armed. Some run away, some go prone on the ground. The shooter is armed, quite possibly wearing body armor, with a lot of rounds to spare. The victims are (apparently) offering zero resistance.

Now they say there's two 9mms taken by the ATF.

A true tragedy. Prayers for all involved. I wish just one officer or permit holder would have been there to stop it.

The 2nd Amd. is gone. Guns will be banned like UK inside of 2 years.

Is not the "Gun Free School Zone" one of the
Brady's crowning achievements?

Different school:
On the fifth anniversity, NET News Service carried an interview
with one of the survivors of the 2002 Appalachian School of Law
shooting in Grundy VA. Tracey McGuire Frisk, law student, and
Kim Boyd, librarian, barricaded themselves in the library office:
"Hearing a struggle outside, the pair fearfully crept to
the window. Peering out Frisk watched as two law students,
former policemen armed with handguns, confronted and
subdued Odighizuwa...."--11 Mar 07 Kingsport Times-News.

Nothing like an unarmed victim zone to attract crazies,
especially after Columbine.

Horrible tragedy, and I doubt we'll see anything in the press concerning the dangers posed to college students by "victim disarmament zones."

I'll admit it's very hard not to place a large order for magazines right this moment, but I'm resisting the urge to join the rush.

I know that when you're in the middle of a violent or unexpected situation, it can be difficult to acknowledge that it is real. Especially for people who have not had to face more than schoolyard bully antics during their lives.

I'd like to think that if I am ever in this type of situation that I'd use my five seconds of remaining oxygen to put a hurt on the scum who just shot me. Their eyeballs are coming with me.

SWMAN

If, after this crime, the Brady Gang can't get antigun legislation passed, they never will.

I hope that you are right...and that those who dance on the graves of these and other victims of senseless violence fail - utterly - in their goal of disarming our entire society.

However, I don't think that this is the worst that can be done - read the first few chapters of "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross

Question is, how are y'all in the 'free states' gonna handle the New Jersey/California style anti gun legislation that may come down from the fed .gov in the aftermath of this?

When I watched the video showing dozens of swat guys running around.......I'm thinking.....what a waste of money and resources...........they did nothing, they stopped nothing.

The only way you can fight crime as it happens (in a free society)....is for carry holders to be in greater numbers and take action.

The other alternative is a police state.

The outcry for wanting to be legally armed, should be coming from the students at VT.

Seems to me, a few armed student in each class, with the doors closed would have gone a long way to prevent the extent of this disaster! ...as many have already said.
