And I want to get as much as possible.

Things that interest me would be semi-auto.

I'd like something in a common handgun size (9mm), and possibly something like an AR or AK. Any way I could do both and stay within my budget?

AR's I have noticed are a bit expensive, but I like that you can customize them. What are my options?

$1k is not enough if you want both a rifle and pistol and are looking at the AR for the rifle.

I'd say get (1) a Glock 17/19 handgun; and (2) a decent AK clone in 7.62x39mm.

The Glock gives you a reliable, popular semi-auto handgun. It also has tons of accessories available (holsters, sights, etc.). Magazines are cheap ($17-20/mag), as is ammo. NIB a Glock should not run you more than $600 (it's more like $550 in my neck of the woods).

Of course if the Glock does not fit your hand (IMO the most critical measure of a handgun's fit to the user) do not buy it, get something that fits your hand better.

For the AK, I'm not up to speed on current offerings but I'm sure you could get one for $400-500. Mags are cheap (check out the Sportsmens' Guide deal, basically $6-7/mag). Ammo is not as cheap as it used to be, but you can still get Wolf ammo for $160/k.

Sorry, I was looking for a rifle in a pistol caliber and another semiauto rifle like the AK AR or SKS.

What about an AR15 in 223 plus an extra upper in 9mm?

The back of the current issue of Combat Arms (I read it for the articles, really) had an ad for Model 1 Sales. I don't know anything about this company other than the fact that they had REALLY good prices on complete AR15 kits(w/o lower receivers) and assembled uppers.

You could easily get a Hi-Point 995 carbine, an ATI stock for it, an AK, a decent red dot, and have money left over.

For the $1000?

Get a SAIGA in .223
http://thegunsource.com/store/Item.aspx?PID=56178

and ammunition:
http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/223_ammunition.html

That's $267.59 + $149.99 = $417.58

for a handgun, I sugest:
A Glock 17 from CDNN....sometimes as little as $390.

ammunition: Wolf FMJ 1000rds:
http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=55612

so that's $390 + $135 = $525.00

Total is $942.58

Magazines and additional goodies will be extra.

If you really want to bootstrap it, get a hi point 9mm for $150 - leaves a lot of money open for magazines and more ammunition.

My personal stash? CZ52 and 2000 rounds of ammunition - all for less than $400.

Try this

OK... not an AK or AR but the Mech Tech unit when you add a Glock 9mm w/30rd mags you can have a 9mm 30rd rifle. Its a simple add on takes less then a minute to do and can be undone in a minute.here is a picture of my Kimber 45 with the system.

i've seen beretta Cx4 carbines in 9mm and 40SW for as low as 500$, but if you want to get TWO rifles and a crapload of accessories and mags,I'm stumped.

Same here. I recommend ditching the pistol-caliber rifle and going with a Bushmaster M4 clone ($750-850) and spending the rest on ammunition and magazines.

A thousand bucks is a very decent AR-15 waiting to happen. The AR can be bought to use or converted to use with a simple, no paperwork upper receiver swap to another caliber including your pistol caliber.

If you don't want to go that route, I'd get a Beretta CX4 which can be configured to take a multitude of Beretta magazines (to go with a companion pistol) or a Kel Tec Sub-2000 which can be bought to take Glock, Beretta, S&W mags, et. all to go with a companion pistol...

If you go the Kel Tec or Beretta route you'll have a lot of change left over for mags and ammo.

Must be nice to have money and not really know what you want to do with it...

That said,

What interests you, I'm not sure you've researched.

Semi-auto - Pistol Caliber, AR or AK.

Like others have said, For that money, the AR is out. If you want pistol caliber, the AR, (save for .22 upper), and the AK are out.

There have been some rifle suggestions.

I reply to you asking though, What purpose will either rifle/carbine serve? Regardless of caliber or as a semi-auto.

Ok, you don't go buy a 4x4 truck to use as a Taxi. Will you be looking for this semi-auto handgun caliber'd rifle/carbine for hunting, plinking, or ??? And the other assault rifle? What will it be used for?

Suit the purpose first, then you'll have a better chance of finding the best fit in a rifle/carbine.

I'd like something in a common handgun size (9mm), and possibly something like an AR or AK. Any way I could do both and stay within my budget?

AK clone - $400
1000 round ammo - $190
Kel-Tec Sub2000 Carbine 9mm ( glock config) - around $300
500 rounds ammo - $80 (if you shop around, maybe win. white box or magtech)

= $970 + tax

Maybe an AK pistol with detachable folding stock. You would have two guns in one with money left for ammo and goodies.

Attach that stock and you can think about what else to buy when you get out of the hoosegow in 10 years.
How about build an AR and get a couple different uppers (9mm and .223)? Should be doable for $1000 if you shop around.

To the question of what it will be for...

Well, the one with pistol caliber would be for plinking.

The other would be mostly plinking/fun. Not looking to hunt with it.

What are your accuracy expectations?

And, If I may, why would you want to buy two carbines that do pretty much the same thing?

I'm guessing that you don't have much of an arsinal now... Right?

Do you have a Ruger 10-22? Great for plinking fun.

Have you thought about a late model SS Ruger Mini-14 or Mini-30?

Trying to keep main stream...
This ought to be just inside your budget if you hunt for good prices or buy used. Both will hold their value more than those 'conversion' kit toys. Parts and upgrades are readily available for both.

Other than that, if you want the best, then find a used AR target in whatever brand/flavor you can afford. Then down the road, buy a .22 upper for it.

There are other suggestions, but these would be my personal choices if I had your budget and desire.

SKS $250 (cheaper if you shop)
Kel-Tec 9mm $250
Moss 500 Walmart Rollback $200
Savage .22lr Walmart Rollback $100
Total - $800, saving $200 for a starting stock of ammo

Prices are approximate, your mileage may vary and covers most situations. Heck take $100 of that extra and pick up a Mosin while your at it too.

AK clone - $400
1000 round ammo - $190
Kel-Tec Sub2000 Carbine 9mm ( glock config) - around $300
500 rounds ammo - $80 (if you shop around, maybe win. white box or magtech)

I like that setup .. But personally I would go for:

WASR-10 - $350 (new)
Glock 19- 350-450 (used-new)
The rest in ammo

I'd go with one of the Romanian AKs and maybe a Ruger P series pistol. Both are cheap and reliable. You'd have a few bucks left for some spare mags and such.

Personally I would go with the ak clone and a pistol also , but you'll notice a few posts down from the top the original poster explains hes looking for a pistol caliber carbine and not a pistol, which I why I suggested the kel-tec.
